Chapter 52: New Clues
After leaving the sealed land, we found ourselves in a vast wilderness. It was like a vast canvas, painted with monotonous colors by nature. The sun poured down unreservedly, bright and blazing, yet unable to dispel the desolation and loneliness that permeated the land. The withered wild grass, like a group of weary old men, shivered in the wind, rustling faintly, as if telling stories of the past. In the distance, rolling mountain ranges stretched as far as the eye could see. Their outlines, illuminated by the sunlight, resembled a blurred ink painting, somewhat blurred and imbued with a mysterious aura.
"Where should we start looking for new clues?" I stopped and turned my gaze to Luo Chen. My heart seemed to be shrouded in fog and was full of doubts.
Luo Chen also paused, his movements calm and composed. Then, he slowly pulled a worn map from his bosom. It resembled a weathered old man, its paper yellowed, its edges torn, and still stained with faint stains. We had previously found this map after much difficulty in an ancient ruin. It was like a mysterious key, potentially unlocking the door to new clues. However, the writing and images marking the mysterious locations on the map were often blurred, as if ruthlessly washed away by the torrent of time.
"According to this map, the closest place to us that might hold a clue is that forgotten town," Luo Chen said as he carefully examined the map. His eyes were focused and deep, as if he was trying to see through the vague markings and penetrate the secrets hidden behind the town.
"A forgotten town? That sounds a bit eerie." I frowned, feeling uneasy. The name was like a cold wind blowing into my heart, making me shiver.
"That's right, but there might be something we need hidden there." Luo Chen patted the map gently, as if to inject strength into it, then carefully put the map away and put it back in his arms. Then, we set off in that direction.
We trudged through the wilderness for a long time, leaving a trail of shallow footprints on the dry earth. Finally, the outline of the small town gradually became clear to us. It was a dilapidated town, like an abandoned child forgotten by time. Most of the houses were built of stone and wood, materials that once provided shelter, but now seemed shaky and crumbling. The roofs of many houses had collapsed, like the broken teeth of an old man. The walls were covered with vines, which were like green pythons, winding and entwining, as if trying to devour the houses completely. A light mist filled the streets, like a veil, adding a mysterious atmosphere to the town. The entire town was so quiet that it was a little eerie. Apart from our footsteps, no other sound could be heard, as if this was a corner abandoned by the world.
"It seems like no one has lived here for a long time." I whispered, my voice particularly abrupt in the silent environment. I felt like an intruder, disturbing this deep silence.
"Well, but we still have to be careful." Luo Chen gripped his wand cautiously, his fingers tightly clasping the handle, as if this would give him more strength and a sense of security. His eyes were like a vigilant falcon, constantly scanning the surrounding environment, not missing any corner that might hide danger.
We slowly walked into the town. The cobblestones beneath our feet creaked like a sleeping old man, awakened by our footsteps. The sound echoed through the quiet town, like an ancient ballad, yet also a warning of danger. Suddenly, a melodious flute flowed slowly from afar, like clear spring water. The sound was ethereal and mysterious, as if from another world. Each note was like a spirit dancing in the air before entering our ears.
"This flute sound..." I felt a little strange. The flute sound seemed to have an invisible magic that attracted me and at the same time made me more alert.
"Let's go take a look," Luo Chen said, his voice low and firm. We walked in the direction of the flute sound, our steps light and cautious, as if we were approaching an unknown treasure.
We found a little boy sitting in the doorway of a dilapidated house, playing the flute. His clothes were tattered, as if torn countless times by time and wind and rain, covered in patches and stains. His hair was tangled, like a messy bird's nest, but his eyes were exceptionally bright, like twinkling stars in the night sky, revealing a sense of innocence and determination.
"Who are you?" The little boy stopped playing when he saw us. He slowly put the flute down and held it tightly with both hands, as if protecting a precious treasure. His voice was clear and childish, echoing in the quiet town.
"We are just travelers passing by. Why are you here alone?" I asked, trying to keep my voice gentle so as not to scare the little boy.
"I have always lived here. This is my home." The little boy replied. There was no fear in his eyes, only a longing for his home.
"This town looks like it's been abandoned for a long time. Why are you still here?" Luo Chen asked curiously. His eyes fell on the little boy, full of doubts.
The little boy lowered his head and was silent for a moment, as if recalling something. Then he slowly said, "I'm waiting for my family to come back. They're out looking for treasure. They said they'll come back to pick me up when they find it." His voice was a little low, revealing a hint of sadness.
"Treasure? What treasure?" My heart moved, and I felt that this treasure might have some connection with the clue we are looking for.
"I don't know either. I just know that they said it was a very important thing that could change a lot of things." said the little boy, raising his head with a glimmer of anticipation in his eyes.
"Then do you know where they went to look for it?" Luo Chen asked, leaning forward slightly, wanting to get more information from the little boy.
The little boy shook his head and said, "I don't know, but they left this for me when they left." As he said that, he took out a small box from his arms.
Our eyes were instantly drawn to the small box. It was a delicate, exquisite box, seemingly old, yet radiating a mysterious aura. We discovered strange runes engraved on it, like ancient spells imbued with mysterious power. These runes bore a resemblance to those we had seen in the Sealed Land, forming a mysterious bond connecting this small box to our previous experiences.
"This box..." I was about to say something when suddenly, a swarm of dark figures emerged from all around. These shadows were like ghosts crawling out of the dark abyss. They had no fixed shape, like clouds of black smoke, twisting and swirling in the air. They pounced towards us at an extremely fast speed, like black lightning.
"Be careful!" Luo Chen shouted, with a hint of nervousness in his voice.
I quickly drew my sword and slashed at the shadow. My sword traced a silver arc through the air, but it passed right through the shadow, causing no damage. It was like slashing into empty air, and I only felt a cold breath emanating from the shadow.
"These things are not solid!" I cried, filled with surprise and uneasiness.
Luo Chen didn't hesitate. He swiftly waved his wand, muttering something to himself. As he chanted, a beam of white light emanated from the wand. It was like holy moonlight, soft and bright. It quickly enveloped us, forming a protective shield. The shadows, upon encountering the light, retreated quickly as if burned. They lingered at the edge of the light, like a pack of hungry wolves, eager to break through the defenses but hesitant.
"What is this?" I asked in shock, my heart beating like a drum, as if it was about to jump out of my chest.
"It looks like a ghost summoned by some dark force." Luo Chen said, his brows furrowed and his eyes full of vigilance.
The little boy hid behind us, his body trembling slightly as he looked at the shadows in fear. "They often appear and try to steal my box." His voice was sobbing, like a frightened little animal.
"This box must contain some secret." I said, looking at the small box, and my curiosity about the box became even stronger.
We decided to protect the little boy and his box first, then figure out the origin of these shadows and the secrets within. The shadows attacked again and again, like a surging tide, surging towards us in wave after wave. Luo Chen continuously increased the intensity of his magical radiance, beads of sweat covering his forehead. His wand flickered in his hand, as if fighting alongside the shadows. I remained vigilant, my eyes fixed on the shadows, my sword ready to respond to any breakthrough.
Just when we were feeling a little tired, the shadows suddenly stopped attacking and disappeared without a trace just as suddenly as they appeared. They were like a mysterious wind, coming and going without a trace, leaving only silence and doubts in our hearts.
"Why did they suddenly disappear?" I asked in confusion. My breathing had not yet completely calmed down and my voice was a little breathless.
"I don't know, but we can't let our guard down." Luo Chen said, his eyes still scanning the surroundings vigilantly, the wand in his hand still tightly grasped.
We brought the little boy to a relatively safe place, a relatively intact house. The walls, though somewhat worn, still provided some shelter. Then, we began to examine the small box carefully. The runes seemed like a mysterious code, concealing some important message. We tried to decipher them, but we had no clue. It was as if the runes were deliberately teasing us; no matter how we looked at them, we could not understand their meaning.
"Maybe we need more knowledge to unlock the secret of this box." Luo Chen said helplessly, with a hint of frustration in his eyes.
"So what should we do now?" I asked. I was also a little confused and didn't know where to go next.
"Let's look around in this town first, maybe we can find something useful." Luo Chen said, a glimmer of hope rekindled in his eyes.
So, we began searching the town. In a dilapidated house, we found a dusty diary. Like an old man, long asleep, it lay quietly in a corner. The pages were yellowed and covered in dust, like a gray veil draped by time. Opening the diary, the handwriting was blurred, as if washed away by the tears of time. But we persisted, deciphering each word like a precious treasure, unwilling to miss a single clue.
"This diary may give us some clues." I said, with a hint of anticipation in my voice.
We continued to decipher the diary's contents, hoping to find clues about the small box or the shadow, and thus new clues to stop the spread of evil. Our eyes were fixed on every page of the diary, as if trying to see through the blurred handwriting and dig out the secrets we needed from this ancient text.
