Diablo traveled through time and became a necromancer
Chapter 278: Irene, we are here.
"Damn it..." Wu Ye cursed under his breath. Thorien's minions were indeed cunning, even calculating this. They could only walk back on their own two legs (or Skeleton Brother's bony legs)!
He had previously considered sending Irene back alone. The girl's injuries were serious, and the corrosive power of hell on her back continued to erode. The sooner she received treatment from Grandma Akara, the better.
"Erin," Wu Ye paused on the way, took out a scroll, and said seriously, "Your injury cannot be delayed. Use this and return to Rogge to find Grandma Akara immediately."
Irene stared at the scroll, emitting faint spatial fluctuations. A flicker of hesitation crossed her pale face, but then her eyes grew resolute. She shook her head, her voice weak but undeniably resolute: "No, Elder Wu. The mission...is not yet complete. I was a scout. I witnessed the destruction of Branwell Outpost firsthand. You and I captured this prisoner...I must...personally escort him back! It's my duty! And..." She glanced at the unconscious prisoner carried on Brother Skeleton's back, then at Wu Ye and Brother Skeleton, "I cannot abandon you...and leave alone."
Wu Ye saw the stubbornness and sense of duty that befell a Rogue warrior in her eyes, the camaraderie of a companion unwilling to escape danger alone, and ultimately gave up trying to persuade her. He knew Irene's character; once she made a decision, it was difficult to change it. He could only nod and carefully put the scroll away. "Alright, follow me. Hang on, we're almost there."
Irene nodded vigorously, gritted her teeth, endured the severe pain in her back, and quickened her pace.
Therefore, they could only rely on the most primitive method—traveling on foot. This greatly increased the risks and uncertainty of the journey. Thorien's minions could catch up at any time, or set up new ambushes ahead. The captives themselves were also time bombs.
Skeleton Brother carried the captive on his back, his massive frame casting a long shadow in the setting sun. The captive remained unconscious, groaning unconsciously in pain as the vehicle jolted him. Skeleton Brother's soul fire burned calmly, but Wu Ye could sense the cold vigilance within its spiritual connection—it too was on guard against any movement or external attack from the captive.
Ailin followed closely beside Wu Ye, her face growing even paler from blood loss and exhaustion, a fine layer of cold sweat oozing from her forehead. Every step she took irritated the wound on her back, bringing waves of tearing pain.
But she pursed her lips tightly, staring resolutely ahead, not uttering a single groan of pain. She had to hold on! For the sake of her fallen captain and teammates, and for the safe return of the intelligence and prisoners to Rogge!
The team continued on in silence. The setting sun stained the earth a golden red, blurring the outlines of the distant mountains. They had bypassed the rebuilt outskirts of Tristram and embarked on the last relatively flat section of the trade route to Rogue City.
When the team passed a huge boundary marker engraved with the emblem of a spread-winged falcon (the logo of the Rogge Camp), Wu Ye's tense nerves finally relaxed a little. Beyond the boundary marker, the air seemed to have changed.
The faint smell of blasphemy and tension coming from the direction of Westmarch was dispelled, replaced by an atmosphere of relative peace and even a hint of order.
Scattered, meticulously tended farmlands and orchards began to appear on both sides of the road. In the distance, the figures of the Rogge patrol could be seen—all female warriors! Clad in light yet sturdy leather armor or chain mail inlaid with metal plates, they carried longbows on their backs, quivers dangling from their waists, and patrolled the fields and roads with vigorous and alert steps.
Their figures, glittering like a moving landscape in the setting sun, were majestic and valiant. Occasionally, passing caravans or farmers would glance at Wu Ye and his companions (especially Skeleton Brother's conspicuously tall frame and dark blue soul fire), though they would often nod in a friendly greeting. Clearly, Elder Wu Ye and his Skeleton Brother were household names in Rogge's territory.
"Finally... back." Erin looked at the familiar fields and patrol team, her tense body relaxing slightly, a tired smile of relief on her face. Although her wounds still ached, the sense of security of returning to her own territory lifted her spirits.
Wu Ye breathed a sigh of relief. No matter how rampant Thorien's minions were, they wouldn't dare easily penetrate Rogge's core territory, especially with the increased patrols on the border. This meant they were finally free from the threat of being hunted and could finally breathe a sigh of relief.
Looking at Irene's pale face and the way she was trying to hold back the pain, then glancing at the still unconscious captive on Skeleton Brother's back, looking like a torn sack, Wu Ye's heart stirred. Now that they were safe, why should Irene endure the pain of hiking any longer? It was time to show off his "comfortable flow" travel style!
He stopped and signaled to Irene and Skeleton Brother, "Rest here for a while."
Irene was puzzled, but she stopped obediently. Skeleton Brother silently and gently put the captive down (still not very gently), and turned his blue soul fire towards Wu Ye.
Wu Ye walked to a relatively open, flat area by the roadside. He looked around, and after confirming it was safe, a relaxed smile appeared on his face. With a slight movement of his mind, space rippled!
A massive, wheelless box, crafted from solid oak, appeared out of thin air and landed steadily on the ground! The box was approximately three meters long, three meters wide, and two meters high, resembling a square wooden house. This was Wu Ye's meticulously crafted "wooden RV"!
Then, he took out several thick and tough lifting bars and installed them on the fixed points on both sides of the box.
"Skeleton Warriors! Get up!" Wu Ye tapped the ground lightly with his staff and shouted softly.
Four ordinary skeleton warriors, armed with bone knives and shields, their eyes ablaze with dark green soul fire, emerged from the ground. Silently, they approached the RV and, at Wu Ye's command, steadily lifted the bar and hefted the heavy wooden box onto their shoulders. Their movements were perfectly coordinated, like the most sophisticated machinery.
"Eileen, come inside and rest." Wu Ye opened a small grille door on the side of the RV and said to Eileen, "There's a bed inside. It'll be much more comfortable if you lie down. We still have a long way to go, so there's no need to force yourself."
Irene stared at the incredible "mobile fortress" before her, her mouth wide open in amazement. She had never imagined traveling like this! She glanced at Wu Ye gratefully and didn't refuse. With Wu Ye's support, she carefully climbed into the RV.
The interior of the RV was more spacious than expected. A wooden bed with a thick fur mat was fixed to one side of the car, along with a small table and several storage compartments.
Although the furnishings were simple, they were clean and tidy. It was a hundred times better than lying on the bumpy back of a skeleton or trekking on foot! Erin gently lay down on the bed, the pain instantly lessening as the wound on her back came into contact with the soft, stable support. She sighed comfortably, her tense nerves completely relaxing.
As for the captive, Wu Ye had Brother Skeleton pick him up again and securely fasten him with vines to a specially designed mounting bracket on the roof of the RV (to prevent him from falling and to facilitate guarding). The captive remained unconscious, like a piece of luggage tied to the roof.
Skeleton Brother, wielding a rune-encrusted giant sword, walked like a guard captain, clearing the way for the four skeleton warriors carrying the RV. His massive frame and dark blue soul fire were a powerful deterrent.
Wu Ye walked leisurely beside the RV. He didn't need to take a car; the distance was nothing to him.
Watching the four skeleton warriors carrying the RV forward steadily with steady steps and a moderate speed (although not as fast as running at full speed, it was much faster than Irene walking despite the pain), he nodded with satisfaction.
The setting sun cast its afterglow across the smooth commercial road, stretching the silhouettes of the RV, the Skeleton Warrior, Skeleton Brother, and Wu Ye into long lines. Golden wheat fields and emerald green orchards lined the roadside, and the air was filled with the fragrance of earth and ripening crops.
In the distance, the agile figures of the Rogge patrol were clearly visible. They carried longbows and walked with firm steps. Occasionally, the clear whistles of their signals could be heard.
Lying on the bed in the RV, Erin gazed through the small grille window at the peaceful and tranquil countryside outside, and the familiar, heroic figures of the patrol sisters in the distance. A warmth welled up in her heart. She felt the steady movement beneath her, and the pain in her back seemed less unbearable.
She could even smell the fresh air wafting in from the window, a mixture of grass and wheat. This comfortable and safe journey home was a world of difference from the desperate raid on the border of Westmarch.
Skeleton Brother walked in front, its dark blue soul fire calmly scanning the road. Although still silent, Wu Ye could sense that the cold resentment in his spiritual connection seemed to have dissipated considerably. While he still couldn't enjoy the food himself, at least he wouldn't have to watch others (the captives) suffer from the spiciness, and Irene could get a better rest.
It seems to be quite satisfied with the current status of "guarding" and "clearing the way".
Wu Ye's mood also relaxed. As he walked, he admired the peaceful dusk scenery in Rogge's territory. This was the "adventure" life he pursued—enjoying the scenery and comfort of the journey while maintaining safety.
Of course, he knew this peace was only temporary. A storm would soon arrive upon his return to Rogue City. But for now, he was willing to enjoy this moment of peace and comfort.
The prisoner was bouncing on the roof of the car, still unconscious and unaware of the "luxury car" under him.
In the afterglow of the setting sun, the team advanced steadily towards the magnificent city of Rogge, where the lights were gradually lighting up, in an unprecedented, comfortable and smooth manner.
The Rogue patrol they met along the way looked at this strange team (skeletons carrying a wooden house, people tied to the roof, and a skeleton guarding the front emitting a powerful aura) with surprise and curiosity. But after recognizing that it was Elder Wu Ye, they saluted respectfully and then continued their patrol mission.
The setting sun completely sank into the horizon, and dusk fell. However, more and more lights lit up in the direction of Rogge City, like bright pearls inlaid in the dark earth, guiding the way home.
Wu Ye's "mobile fortress"—an oak RV steadily carried by four skeleton warriors, escorted by the silent yet powerful skeleton guard—moved steadily along the broad trade route toward the magnificent city. The farmlands and orchards lining the road gradually gave way to neatly planned suburban farms and scattered outposts. The air, thick with the fragrant aroma of earth, began to mingle with the distinctive aroma of human habitation—cooking smoke, leather, ironwork, and a subtle hint of the bustle of a large city.
Irene sprawled on the bed in the RV, gazing through the small grille window at the city's silhouette growing clearer and brighter in the distance. The towering city walls, built of massive stone slabs, stood like silent giants in the twilight. The torches dotted along the walls resembled stars, illuminating the nimble figures of the Rogue warriors patrolling the battlements. The familiar sight brought a slight warmth to her eyes. Her nerves, tense for days, finally relaxed completely. Fatigue washed over her like a tide, but she steeled herself; she wanted to witness the captives being taken to the prison.
A towering skeleton, emitting a faint blue soulfire and wielding a rune-encrusted giant sword, walked at the front, like its most loyal guard. Its cold frame and the unconscious captives tied to the roof of the RV drew the attention of the scattered pedestrians and patrols along the way. However, upon recognizing Elder Wu Ye's group, and especially upon seeing the iconic, powerful skeleton, they respectfully saluted and made way.
When the team finally reached the massive, iron-clad gate of Rogge City, horns had already sounded from the city walls. Heavy capstans creaked, and the massive gate slowly swung inward, revealing the brightly lit inner city and the Rogge guards standing ready.
"It's Elder Wu!"
"And... Elder Wu's powerful skeleton!"
"Look! There's a person tied to the roof of the car!"
"Erin's here too! She looks injured!"
From the city wall came the surprised and concerned cries of the Rogge guards, their eyes swept in awe over the skeleton guard standing silently with the soul fire burning.
