Chapter 8 An Lingrong (7)
On the day of entering the palace, the sky was turning pale. An Lingrong stood in front of the courtyard gate, her eyes slowly sweeping over the familiar plants and trees in front of her.
Her eyes revealed a complex emotion, a mixture of reluctance and anticipation.
An Lingrong walked slowly towards the blooming crabapple tree in the yard and gently stroked the petals with her slender fingers.
The soft touch of the petals made her tremble slightly, but a chill surged in her heart.
She took a deep breath. The air was filled with a faint floral scent, but it couldn't dispel the worries in her heart.
At this time, Chunhua walked cautiously to An Lingrong.
She looked at her young master's back, hesitated for a moment, and then said softly, "Young master, it's getting late, it's time to set off."
Hearing this, An Lingrong slowly turned around, looked at Chunhua deeply, and a faint smile appeared on the corner of her mouth: "Yes, it's time to go."
When they arrived at Shunzhen Gate, An Lingrong stepped out of the sedan chair lightly.
She raised her head and her eyes fell on the towering palace walls.
The bright sunshine shines on the red walls, shrouding the entire palace in golden splendor.
An Lingrong silently compared the skyscrapers of the modern city with the ancient palace in front of her.
Just as her thoughts drifted away, the sound of light footsteps reached her ears.
An Lingrong quickly collected her thoughts and turned to look. She saw Zhen Huan and Shen Meizhuang walking gracefully towards her, their skirts swaying gently in the breeze.
An Lingrong immediately revealed a gentle and pleasant smile and bowed politely to the two of them.
"My two sisters, nice to meet you." An Lingrong said softly, her voice flowing like a clear spring, with just the right amount of respect.
Zhen Huan nodded slightly, a faint smile playing on her lips. "You're too polite, Concubine Shu." Her voice was gentle and steady, with a subtle scrutiny.
Shen Meizhuang stood aside, looking at An Lingrong tenderly, and said softly, "Sister Shu is new to the palace. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us."
An Lingrong nodded gently: "Thank you, sisters."
After the greetings, a young eunuch in blue official uniform walked over quickly and saluted respectfully to the three people.
"Shu Changzai, I have been ordered to take you to Jingyang Palace."
An Lingrong said goodbye to Zhen Huan and Shen Meiyu, and followed the young eunuch into the palace.
Her steps were graceful and unhurried, her gaze occasionally sweeping across the red walls and green tiles on either side. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the stone pavement. A gentle breeze carried wafts of floral fragrance.
An Lingrong slowly stepped into Jingyang Palace, her eyes flowing slowly across the main hall in front of her like water.
Her brows unconsciously knitted together, a cloud of doubts welling up in her heart. According to her position, she shouldn't be able to live in the main hall.
She turned her head slightly and looked at Fang Yi, the head of the department beside her. Her voice was soft but with a hint of confusion: "Aunt, what's going on?"
Seeing this, Fangyi hurried forward a few steps, bowed her head respectfully, and explained, "My dear lady, this is a special arrangement by the Empress. The side halls and the back halls of Jingyang Palace are filled with books, making them uninhabitable."
When An Lingrong heard this, a hint of surprise instantly appeared in her eyes, but she quickly hid this emotion under her calm face.
She walked slowly, her skirt drawing an elegant arc on the ground, and entered the hall.
An Lingrong's eyes were drawn to the shelves full of books. She stretched out her slender fingers and gently stroked the spines of the books, feeling the texture of the paper.
The air was filled with the faint scent of ink, which made her feel warm in her heart.
"Thank you, Your Majesty, for your consideration." An Lingrong turned to Fang Yi and said in a gentle and sincere voice, "Aunt, please convey my gratitude to me."
Fang Yi replied respectfully, "Yes, I will definitely convey that."
An Lingrong nodded slightly, turning her gaze once more to the books. This vast collection was undoubtedly a precious treasure, offering endless possibilities for her future plans.
She turned to Chunhua beside her, her voice soft but with undeniable authority: "Chunhua, distribute the reward money."
At this time, a young eunuch came running over, panting, beads of sweat on his forehead: "My lady, the Empress and Concubine Hua have sent rewards."
An Lingrong turned to face the young eunuch, an elegant smile on her lips: "Thank you, eunuch, for your appreciation of Chunhua." Her voice was like a clear spring, which eased the young eunuch's nervous mood a little.
Chunhua held the reward in both hands and carefully handed it to An Lingrong.
An Lingrong silently asked the system Mengmeng in her heart: "Is there poison in it?" She held her breath and waited for the system's response.
After a moment, An Lingrong slowly raised her head, her eyes as sharp as torches, staring straight at Chunhua.
Her voice was low and firm, carrying unquestionable majesty: "Chunhua, keep the reward from Concubine Hua."
She paused, the corners of her mouth curling up slightly. An Lingrong continued, "As for the Empress's..." Her tone was filled with a hint of meaning, "Let's seal it up for now."
Chunhua straightened her back, bowed deeply, and said in a respectful and firm voice, "Yes, my lady."
An Lingrong sat before her gold- and jade-inlaid dressing table, her slender fingers gently stroking the delicate jewelry box on the tabletop. Her eyes were deep, and her thoughts surged like a tide.
Suddenly, she remembered the servant who had introduced herself earlier. "Baojuan..." An Lingrong whispered the name, a cold look in her eyes.
The corners of her lips rose slightly, with a hint of sarcasm, "The Queen is not willing to miss any opportunity."
An Lingrong turned to the servants in the room and said, "Come, come here. I have something to give you."
She pulled a small porcelain bottle from her sleeve and poured out a few pills. "These are my specially made tranquilizing pills. Take them all." An Lingrong's voice was gentle, yet carried an unquestionable command.
The servants came forward one by one and took the pills. An Lingrong carefully observed each person's reaction, taking note of it in her mind.
After taking the medicine, she began to inquire about everyone's origins. Xiao Luzi confessed that he was sent by the emperor, Xiao Yanzi admitted that he was the empress dowager's person, and the palace maid named Luzhu was Concubine Duan's spy.
An Lingrong sighed softly after hearing this. She walked to the desk, picked up a thread-bound book, and gently ran her fingers along the spine. "Duan Fei, Duan Fei, your mind is truly complicated," she muttered to herself, a hint of emotion in her voice.
She closed the book and glanced at the servants in the room. An Lingrong's eyes grew darker, and her tone was filled with a hint of caution: "It seems that everyone in the palace is not simple."
