Chapter 4: The Newly Arrived Cat-Orc

Legilimency, the magic that can read another's thoughts and memories, is somewhat taboo. Fortunately, the subject isn't unconscious while this magic is in effect. When Hayashi Maki casts this spell, the subject also experiences the sensation of their memories being pored over. If Hayashi Maki could access someone's memories without their knowledge, possessing this forbidden ability would likely result in him being imprisoned like a criminal in the strictest of prisons. After all, memories are the deepest secrets of every human being. No one, no matter how powerful or humble, would want someone in this world to freely access their memories. Such a person deserves to be confined to a dark death row or killed—in short, their continued existence is best avoided.

Legilimency reads pure memory, capturing not only the images but also the feelings and thoughts of the person at that moment. Therefore, by matching the spoken words in memory with the thoughts, one can grasp fragments of the other person's language. While this isn't the original application of Legilimency, the power itself is undefined; it depends on how it is used, ultimately achieving the goal.

Being subjected to Legilimency felt quite unpleasant. As the cat-beast began to experience flashbacks of its past, its mid-air thrashing became even more ferocious. Seeing her claws flailing about, Lin Zhenxi still felt a little uneasy, so she flicked her wand and cast a Binding Spell on the cat, finally bringing it to its knees.

It even began to feel fear. After discovering its body had become incredibly stiff, unable to move even a finger, its eyes revealed a clear look of fear. It seemed that after a fierce but fruitless struggle, it had finally come to terms with its inability to resist Lin Zhenxi. Its innate timidity had returned to its body, taking control of its mind.

Meanwhile, Lin Zhenxi wasn't feeling well either. During Legilimency, she was also being flooded with memories. While these memories flashed by like a revolving lantern, the sheer volume was overwhelming. Hundreds of images, accompanied by sound and voice, were overwhelming her, and her head was pounding. Her brain was working at full speed to quickly comprehend these memories.

Fortunately, the life of this cat orc was not rich. Before crossing over, it was just an ordinary orc living in a place that looked like a garbage mountain. Its daily life was to look for useful things from the garbage dump as high as a mountain. At night, it would return to its own residence and snuggle up with orcs who looked similar to it to sleep. This cycle repeated itself over and over again, in a poor and monotonous way.

Judging from their lifestyle, it wasn't a developed society, but within that mountain of garbage were a large number of electronic components and complex mechanical parts, suggesting a technologically advanced world.

Maybe it's just because this cat orc lives at the bottom of society, can only make a living by scavenging, and has no access to those high-end upper-class things.

Pulling his mind out of the pile of broken memories, Lin Zhenxi rubbed his swollen temples and waved his wand to remove all the magical effects on the cat beastman. The cat beastman fell from mid-air and landed on his butt. He screamed miserably and bounced up from the ground, holding his butt.

Then, it looked at its paws, which could move freely, in disbelief, and realized that it had regained its freedom.

Just as it looked at Lin Zhenxi, it saw Lin Zhenxi frowning and uttering incoherent sentences word by word.

"Kanali...you, traveled through time, here, your hometown, is not here."

Although the grammar was completely wrong, these words alone still made the cat beastman, who had suddenly left his familiar environment, tremble. He looked at Lin Zhenxi in surprise and mumbled a lot of nonsense.

Well, the general meaning is to ask where this place is, who Lin Zhenxi is, why it ran here, etc.

Sure enough, these are the three classic questions. Every newcomer to a foreign land will basically ask these questions, but it is not so easy to explain them clearly, especially in the current situation where communication is difficult.

One of the hallmarks of the aliens was that they were all intelligent creatures capable of communication. No matter how bizarre they looked, even if they were a giant, wriggling worm or a square tin box, as long as one mastered the art of communicating with them, they could all be communicated with.

This cat-orc was no exception; it too possessed its own language and logic. Previously, it had cried because the sudden change in its environment had left its timid self feeling lost. Now, suddenly hearing a familiar language, despite its previous experience being quite disastrous, it still considered Lin Zhenxi its temporary support, rather than continuing to look at her with hostility.

However, Lin Zhenxi's grasp of the other party's language was not even half-baked. At most, she could only pronounce the words one by one from a dictionary with missing pages. So when faced with the cat beastman's stormy questions, she could only cross her hands in front of her chest and make a big "X".

"I said, listen, I'm not good at speaking."

"This is a different world, not your original world."

"You can't go back for now. I'll take you to a safe place."

"There are people out there who can take care of you."

"Do you understand?"

The cat-beast nodded its head quickly like a chicken pecking at rice, as if it couldn't wait to speak.

Traveling through another world should be a very outrageous thing, but Lin Zhenxi always felt that this cat beastman didn't react much after hearing that he had traveled through time. He didn't know whether it was because it had no concept of this aspect, or because traveling through time was not uncommon in its world.

Unfortunately, Lin Zhenxi's Legilimency only reads shallow memories of the subject, not specific memories. At least memories related to time travel are not within her reading range.

Although the alien had calmed down, expecting a cat to be quiet was unrealistic unless Lin Zhenxi knocked it unconscious. Having let go of its unease with reality and the resulting hostility towards Lin Zhenxi, the cat-beast's lively and active nature came to the fore. It began circling Lin Zhenxi, its long tail swishing, its mouth chattering non-stop. Lin Zhenxi's grasp of the cat-beast's language was fragmentary, and understanding its words was like listening to a divine scripture. She had no way of answering its questions properly, but the beast-beast seemed oblivious to this, its mouth still moving non-stop.

Finally, Lin Zhenxi, who could no longer bear it, simply cast a spell to stop this guy from speaking. Watching its mouth opening and closing but no sound coming out, Lin Zhenxi finally breathed a sigh of relief as if he was free.

By the way, this cat-orc's name is Kanari. Judging from the name, it should be a female, but at least from its appearance, it's not clear. If it were half-orc, its physical features would probably be more similar to humans, but Kanari is an orc, and cats can nurse several babies at a time, so Lin Zhenxi is not sure how many special abilities this guy has.

In short, her chest looked flat under that layer of burlap.

Lin Zhenxi slowed down her pace to take care of Kanari, a new arrival. She was sure to be late after being delayed by Kanari, so she simply took out her personal terminal to report her current situation, which should be considered an official business trip.

Although she was not short of money, she still did not like having her salary deducted by the company. Her attendance record at the company was always neat and tidy.

Kanali watched as a complex image suddenly appeared on the thin block in Lin Zhenxi's hand. Her eyes widened in surprise, and she stretched out her claws to touch it. However, after Lin Zhenxi gave her a sidelong glance, she immediately drooped her ears and became quiet.

At least before they get to know each other well, most cats will still take care of their image.

It may not be the case after you get familiar with it.

After reporting her situation to the company, saying she had discovered a new alien on her way to work, her current task immediately changed from clocking in to transporting the new alien to the company. The alien resettlement center would then take over, providing cleaning, physical examinations, and vaccinations. Seeing her current task change, Lin Zhenxi put her personal terminal back in her trouser pocket.

Thanks to the superior performance of the server, the company's information processing speed is quite good. Basically, no matter what is reported, feedback is received immediately. Unless there are unresolved issues, there will be no delays. This greatly saves employees' waiting time and improves work efficiency. In any case, Lin Zhenxi has benefited greatly from this. If she were asked to work in a company where she had to go to the boss for approval in person for everything, and the signature could take half a day to complete, she would definitely not be able to adapt.

Crossing the city's green space and returning to the main street, Kanali felt a sense of dread rather than excitement at the bustling scene. She found it difficult to accept the clamor and incomprehensible scene before her, and subconsciously wanted to escape this unsettling place.

But Lin Zhenxi grabbed the back of his neck and he immediately became obedient.

As expected, it is an orc, and the cat's weaknesses also apply to it.

"Don't run around. Be good and follow me." Lin Zhenxi selected a few words and read them to Kanali one by one. Kanali nodded stiffly.

Next, they finally arrived at the company safely.
