Chapter 393: Seeing the mural again
Deep in the temple, faint blue light shines through the crystal dome, shrouding the entire space in dreamy light and shadow.
Luo Xi's eyes were drawn to the murals on the temple walls. They were no ordinary murals, but were painted with some kind of luminescent mineral, shimmering with mysterious light in the seawater.
The mural depicts the silhouette of a silver-haired man standing on the edge of a cliff, his back to the viewer, his gaze cast into the distance. Rosie felt a strong sense of familiarity; that figure, that outline, was clearly Yu.
"Xixi, don't go over there." Kyle was quick to grab Rosie as she was walking towards the mural. His amber eyes stared at the shining patterns warily.
Rosie turned and looked at Kyle in confusion: "What's wrong?"
"The mural in the forbidden land of the abyss nearly killed you last time." Kyle said in a cold voice, "No mural can be trusted."
Yu shook her head: "These murals won't hurt her."
"How do you know?" Kyle demanded, his amber eyes sharp as a knife.
"Because..." Yu paused, a trace of pain flashed in Ruifeng's eyes, "I also have a share in these memories."
Kyle looked at Yu carefully. After spending some time with him, he was almost certain that no matter what Yu's true identity was, he at least had no ill will towards Luo Xi.
"Go ahead." Kyle let go of his hand and said in a low voice, "But I'll be watching."
Rosie nodded and cautiously approached the mural. As she approached, the light on the mural grew brighter, as if answering her call.
She reached out her hand and lightly touched the surface of the mural with her fingertips.
In an instant, a powerful force surged into her mind.
"Ah!" Luo Xi's body trembled, and countless strange yet familiar scenes flashed before her eyes.
A silver-haired girl stood atop a high platform, her scepter gleaming faintly in her palm. Her long, silver fishtail trailed like flowing moonlight. Below, countless people knelt in worship, their devout gazes directed toward the platform.
The girl turned around.
Rosie's heart stopped. That face—exactly like the reflection in the mirror.
"Do not…"
Rosie's entire body trembled, her knuckles white from clenching her fists. Blood rushed through her veins, her heartbeat thundered in her ears. Her tears dispersed in the seawater, turning into tiny, transparent specks that floated upward.
Those images were like sharp fragments, piercing deep into her consciousness. Strange yet familiar fragments of memory tumbled through her mind, each one causing a stinging pain.
"What is this?" she said hoarsely. "These images...this is not me..."
Rain approached her, her silver hair spreading in the water. His auspicious phoenix eyes were clear and bright, yet they concealed a thousand years of vicissitudes. That gaze penetrated time and space, reaching the core of the soul.
"It's you, Sissi." His voice was low, and each word weighed heavily. "You are the last saint of the Sea God clan, and I am your guardian."
This sentence made Rosie dizzy. She shook her head, trying to deny it, but her body refused to obey. Those unfamiliar fragments of memory tumbled through her mind, rushing out one after another.
Kyle's eyes suddenly turned cold, a murderous intent flashing in his amber pupils. He took a step forward, his pressure surging like a tide.
"What on earth is going on?" He emphasized every word.
Yu smiled, a smile bitter yet relieved. Black lines crept up his cheeks, almost swallowing up half of his face, but it didn't diminish the determination in his eyes.
"Aren't you curious?" He glanced at Kyle, Mike, and Lu Ye, finally landing on Luo Xi. "Why did she become the only holy female in your world?"
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone froze.
Yes, why is Rosie the only Saint? Why did she appear like this after the Saint disappeared for thousands of years?
Kyle and his team never delved into the answers to these questions.
"Because her true nature has never been that of an ordinary human, nor that of a so-called interstellar saint..." Yu pondered for a moment, her voice penetrating. "You could say that all of these identities are her, and yet none of them are her."
Kyle's eyes dropped, a complex expression flashing across his amber pupils. He tightened his arms, protecting Rosie behind him.
"what do you want to say in the end?"
Yu didn't answer directly. He turned, his silver hair swirling in the water, and walked toward the crystal pool in the center of the temple. Black lines had spread to the back of his neck, swallowing up most of his face, leaving only his eyes still clear.
"Follow me, I'll take you to find the answer."
The Heart of the Seagod slowly spun within the crystal pool, releasing ripples of blue energy. These ripples passed through the crystal pool and spread throughout the entire temple, as if the space itself was breathing.
The rain touched the crystal pool and began to chant an ancient and obscure language, and every syllable shook the soul.
Ripples appeared on the surface of the crystal pool, and the Heart of Poseidon in the center spun faster, with the blue light becoming more intense.
"The Sea God clan possesses the forbidden power to reverse time." Yu's voice echoed in the temple, "But the laws of nature do not allow anyone to distort the timeline. Thus, the Sea God clan was cursed, gradually weakened, and eventually perished."
He directs the flow of energy.
"Only the saints of all generations can temporarily cleanse the curse and free the tribe from suffering. But as time goes by, the curse becomes more severe and the cleansing intervals become shorter."
A picture was projected into the crystal pool: the Poseidon tribe gradually weakened, black lines spread all over their bodies, they struggled in pain, and turned into foam.
Luo Xi felt a pang in her heart, tears welling up uncontrollably. The images were so real, as if she had experienced them herself.
"The last saint—"
Yu's gaze fell on Luo Xi, a sadness thick in his eyes. His silver hair, lifted by the water, drifted in the blue light. Black lines had crawled across most of his face, like the fingers of death.
"Sacrifice yourself and infuse the power of purification into the heart of the sea god, hoping to permanently lift the curse."
An image emerged from the crystal pool. A silver-haired woman, her face blurred but her outline resembling Rosie's. She placed her hand on the blue crystal, and a burst of light suddenly erupted, shaking the entire temple. Then she dissipated into a blue light.
Luo Xi felt a sharp pain in her heart, and tears rose in the sea. That feeling was too familiar, as if she had experienced it a thousand times.
"But she failed." Yu's voice was hoarse, and each word was filled with the pain accumulated over a thousand years. "The curse still exists. The saint's soul has been scattered across time and space, waiting to be reunited."
The scene in the crystal pool changes. The fragments of the Saint's soul travel through time and space, reincarnating in different worlds, and eventually most of them gather in the world where Luo Xi came from.
Rosie was speechless with shock. Suddenly, the fragmented memories in her mind began to connect. Those strangely familiar dreams, the memories that didn't belong to her, the resonance of the abyssal murals—everything was explained.
"The fragments of the saint's soul were reincarnated as Sissi." Yu pulled her lips, trying to smile, but that smile was filled with unspeakable bitterness.
Kyle sneered, a hint of sarcasm flashing in his amber eyes: "You say all these identities are hers, and yet none of them are hers. Then how can you be sure that the identity of the Sea God Saint is the real her?"
The rain stopped, and the face under the silver hair froze in an instant.
Yeah, how could he be sure?
This question was like a sharp dagger, piercing his most vulnerable soft spot. After thousands of years of protection and hundreds of reincarnations, in the end, he couldn't even answer the most basic question.
Kyle pressed on, his amber eyes sharp as a knife, every word he said hitting the core.
"What about you? Who are you? Are you rain, or falling stars?"
Black curse lines spread across Yu's face, devouring his life force. His fingers trembled slightly, and the scar on his chest ached faintly. The curse would eventually take his life, but what terrified him more than death was Kyle's final question:
"Or, you are nobody?"
