Qingyun's Love: Tiger Boy Falls in Love with a Pretty Lawyer
Chapter 51 Good Intentions in Danger
Ran Mo was halfway through her daze when a greeting brought her back to consciousness. She looked up and saw a rather skinny woman standing before her. Her complexion was dark, her cheeks were fleshless, and her face looked haggard, though her eyes shone with a hint of brilliance. She was wearing a short, coarse-lined skirt and a shirt.
Ran Mo was about to ask her what she wanted to ask, but the woman acted shy and asked Ran Mo if he could explain the random suspicions between husband and wife.
Ran Mo thought, isn't this just a typical marital dispute? She was so adept at answering questions about this that he nodded and asked her to elaborate.
The woman cleared her throat and told how she and her husband had been married for many years and had a son. Their relationship had been good until someone else interfered and a rift gradually developed between them.
Even more infuriating was that someone had told her that their child didn't look like his father. Her husband, for some reason, insisted on taking the child to a blood test to verify their relationship with someone else.
Ran Mo thought, "Isn't this just one of those clichéd TV dramas? And now it's happening for real." She knew this method of claiming kinship had no scientific basis, but she couldn't explain it to people of this era.
After a brief thought, she told the woman, "As long as you have a clear conscience, nothing can stop him. If the result is unsatisfactory, you can point out that this method of blood test has many uncertainties and cannot be used. You can only provide other witnesses and physical evidence to support it."
The woman said sternly, "I have a clear conscience!" Then she leaned closer to Ran Mo and said with a solemn oath, "To tell you the truth, I'm not afraid of this blood test. I'm 90% sure the child is his!"
Ran Mo almost fainted when he heard this. He thought to himself, "Big sister, your train of thought is really strange. Isn't this just admitting that you have something to hide?"
Looking at this silly yet somewhat adorable elder sister in front of him, Ran Mo didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and could only warn her, "Don't say such things carelessly, let everything take its course. Is there anything else you need my help to mediate?"
"This is really a problem for you, young man. Doesn't my husband want to find a witness to witness the blood test? In addition to two neighbors, he also wants to find someone who has nothing to do with this matter, so as to show fairness and prevent it from being spread outside." The woman said with a roll of her eyes.
She took a step back and looked at Ran Mo. "Young Master has an extraordinary demeanor and is able to uphold justice. He is naturally an excellent choice. If you are willing to go over and help, the expenses will naturally be indispensable."
Ranmo pondered this for a moment. Going to clients' homes to discuss matters was standard business practice. He hadn't been out much in a while, so he decided to take this opportunity to gain some experience.
So he agreed, saying he was only a witness and couldn't predict or guarantee the outcome. The woman readily agreed, saying there was no need for the young man to bother, as long as he could just go.
Without packing up his stall, Ranmo followed the woman to her home. After a long walk, they crossed a secluded hillside. Ranmo asked how far it was. The woman pointed to a wooden house at the foot of the hillside and said, "That's it."
Ranmo looked around. Besides the fields, there were a few houses scattered around, all relatively far apart. It was all quiet and silent.
Ranmo wasn't familiar with the area, and he thought that the fields and farmhouses of old were inevitably more spacious. Besides, he had already spotted his target. Without further ado, he followed the woman to the cabin.
The woman entered first, followed by Ran Mo. The room was dimly lit, and before she could say anything, a cotton-wrapped stick emerged from the shadows and struck Ran Mo in the head. Without a sound, Ran Mo collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
Outside the house, a cold wind blew by, and the branches and leaves of the trees made a rustling sound like sobbing.
After an unknown amount of time, Ran Mo groggily woke up. He felt a splitting pain in his head. The room was pitch black, and he had no idea where he was.
Ran Mo tried to get up, but found his hands and feet bound. A cloth was stuffed in his mouth. Just as he was terrified, he heard a conversation outside.
A man said, "We'll move him to Tuyaogou tonight, but he's a little weak and we're worried he won't fetch a good price." A woman followed up, saying, "He might not be very good at work, but he looks smart and could help look after the bricks. Talk to the buyer about it."
Ran Mo recognized the woman who spoke as the one who had asked her questions. She had never expected her to be such a traitor and a bitch! Were they trying to traffic people?
She had also heard of the Tuyaogou mentioned earlier. It seemed that they specifically abducted young and foolish people from all over the place and sent them there to make bricks and tiles. They worked hard like oxen and horses all day long, with no food to eat and no clothes to wear. Their lives were extremely miserable.
She had never imagined that someone as alert as herself could be tricked into being here, bound and left to be slaughtered. She regretted her carelessness and hoped that someone would find her and rescue her.
She thought of Qingsheng. If she had been with him, she would never have been tricked into this situation. Even if she had been here, with Qingsheng's skills, she would have knocked those bad guys to the ground long ago.
Just then, the wooden door opened and the man poked his head in to investigate. Ranmo quickly closed his eyes, pretending not to wake up. The man watched for a moment, then retreated and locked the door. Their voices faded away, as if they had gone somewhere else for the time being.
Ran Mo moved his aching arms, trying to sit up but failing. He then lay quietly on the hay, calming his mind as his thoughts wandered and lingered.
She thought back to her childhood when her family raised chickens. Once they were familiar with her, the roosters, hens, and chicks seemed to understand her words. Whenever she let them out to feed, she only needed to wave or call out, and five or six would quickly gather around her and follow her home, like a chicken commander leading his troops on a triumphant return.
One day, the plump, reed-feathered hen disappeared. Ranmo searched everywhere but couldn't find any trace of her. Ranmo was heartbroken. They had both developed feelings for each other.
Just when she was about to give up, she saw a small, dilapidated house not far from her home, with a dry well around it. However, it was extremely filthy inside, with feces all over the floor, and few people went in.
An idea struck her, and she walked in. She peered into the well and saw a white object circling back and forth at the bottom. She called out twice, and a clucking sound echoed from the bottom. It was indeed her chicken.
Overjoyed, Ranmo, ignoring the dirt at the bottom of the well, stepped on the ridges and crevices of the well wall and descended two meters deep to grab the hen. Fortunately, there was a friend above the well who helped her pull the hen out of the well and then pulled her out. The rescue operation was a complete success.
Right now, she felt like a chicken trapped in a well, wondering if she would meet someone who could rescue her.
She thought of her mother again. If anything had happened to her, she wouldn't know how heartbroken she would be. She had a beautiful hen at home, whom she called "Little Beauty." Little Beauty had finally hatched an egg and laid a chick, and the two of them had been together forever, caring for each other with deep affection.
Unfortunately, not long after, the chick died for unknown reasons. The hen spent the whole day in a state of gloom and sadness, as if she had lost her soul. It was heartbreaking to watch.
The chickens they raised were never slaughtered or eaten; they were treated like pets. Unfortunately, a chicken plague struck, and all but one of them died. Since then, the Ranmo family has never raised chickens again.
Retracting his thoughts, Ran Mo felt that he couldn't just sit there and wait for death. Before things could turn around, he had to find a way to save himself.
