Chapter 293 Madman (2)
"Crouch?" asked Hagrid, puzzled. "What business does this have of his? Shouldn't he be at the Ministry?"
"Hagrid, go get Karkaroff!" said Dumbledore sternly.
This interrupted Hagrid's long speech, "Oh, okay... no problem, Professor..." Hagrid said before turning and disappearing into the dark trees, with Fang trotting after him.
"I don't know where Barty Crouch is," Dumbledore said to Moody, "but we must find him."
"I'll go find it," said Moody gruffly, and then he raised his wand and limped off into the forest.
Neither Dumbledore nor Harry spoke until they heard a noise which was undoubtedly Hagrid and Fang returning.
Karkaroff hurried behind, dressed in his smooth silver fur robe, his face pale and anxious.
"What's going on?" He saw Krum and Harry lying on the ground, and Harry had a look of extreme pain on his face. Krum was not much better, covering his head and also in pain.
"We've been beaten!" said Krum, sitting up slowly and rubbing his head. "It's that Mr. Crouch."
"Crouch hit you? Crouch hit you? The Triwizard Tournament referee hit you?"
He clearly didn't believe it.
"Igor—" Dumbledore was about to speak, but Karkaroff straightened up, tightened his fur robe around himself, and his face turned ashen.
"It's a hoax!" he roared, pointing at Dumbledore. "It's a conspiracy! You and your Ministry have lured me here under false pretenses, Dumbledore!
This isn't a fair fight! First, you sneaked two of my underage wizards into the competition, and now one of your friends at the Ministry is trying to hors d'oeuvre my champion!
I smell deception and corruption in this whole thing, and you, Dumbledore, with all your talk of strengthening international wizarding ties, of restoring good relations, of forgetting past differences—I now understand what kind of man you are!"
Karkaroff spat at Dumbledore's feet.
In a flash, Hagrid grabbed Karkaroff by the front of his fur robes, lifted him up, and slammed him against a nearby tree.
"Apologize now!" Hagrid roared, and Karkaroff was wheezing, Hagrid's big fist pressed against his throat, his feet dangling in the air.
"Hagrid, stop it!" shouted Dumbledore, his eyes flashing sharply.
Although Hagrid was very reluctant, he loosened his hands that pinned Karkaroff to the tree, and Karkaroff slid down the trunk and collapsed at the base of the tree.
Twigs and leaves rained down on his head.
"Please escort the children back to the castle, Hagrid," said Dumbledore, looking at Hagrid seriously.
Hagrid breathed heavily, "Yes, Professor," and then glared at Karkaroff.
"Protect the children, Hagrid," Dumbledore repeated, which succeeded in bringing Hagrid down from his rage. "Send them straight to the headmaster's office, Harry—and I hope you'll stay there. Whatever you want to do—like send out some owls or something—you can wait until tomorrow morning, do you understand me?"
"Yeah - I see," Harry replied, looking at him.
At this moment, he really wanted to send the pig to take a letter to Sirius and tell him what had happened, but how could Dumbledore know?
"I leave Fang with you, Headmaster," said Hagrid, glaring menacingly at Karkaroff.
Karkaroff was still huddled at the foot of the tree, tangled in his robes and roots. "Stay, Fang. Come on, children."
Lamia silently stepped out from behind Dumbledore and followed him. She would not stay here, even though she was the one who knew best what was happening.
It was obvious that Dumbledore wanted Lamia to stay because she could help them find Crouch faster, but Lamia pretended not to understand Dumbledore's look.
All along the way, Hagrid was cursing. He admired Dumbledore so much that how could he allow others to question him?
"Karkaroff is so brave! How could Dumbledore do such a thing?"
Harry said nothing. He just wanted to find Madam Pomfrey as soon as possible. Although Dumbledore had just treated his knee simply, Harry still felt the pain.
"Hagrid, stop talking, we have to hurry." Lamia said, glancing in Krum's direction.
He lowered his head, not knowing what he was thinking, but his face did not seem to show any anger at Hagrid's insult to his headmaster.
"I almost forgot. I was so angry that I lost my mind." Hagrid glanced at Harry, who was now struggling to walk, but limping, and it was obvious that he was in great pain.
Hagrid simply hugged Harry in his arms, "Harry, I'm sorry, I forgot about you."
"It's all right, Hagrid," said Harry, moving his lips.
This time the process was much faster. When they found Madam Pomfrey, she had not yet gone to bed and had just walked out of the ward, looking very tired.
Lamia stepped forward and explained Harry's condition. Madam Pomfrey did not say anything, but gestured to Hagrid to put Harry on the bed.
Lamia and the others quickly retreated, leaving enough space.
Madam Pomfrey just checked it out and then said, "It's no big deal. It's been dealt with. Just rest for a few days." After she finished speaking, she yawned loudly. It seemed that she needed rest more than Harry.
After hearing this, Harry suddenly felt that his knee didn't hurt so much anymore.
