"You probably assume that the whole wizarding world is amazed by you," Snape continued, his voice so low that the other students couldn't hear.

Lamia picked up the beetles and was busy crushing them. She had no mood to pay attention to Snape, or rather, she didn't listen at all.

"But no matter what, Lamia Nocturne, in my eyes, you are nothing but a disgusting fool. Do you think that you can show your uniqueness by hanging out with those Gryffindor idiots? Or do you think you can ignore all the rules and regulations?"

Lamia had already crushed all the beetles into powder, and then she began to chop the ginger root, keeping her eyes downcast and her expression not changing at all, as if she couldn't hear what Snape said at all.

"So, I want to give you a friendly warning, Lamia Nocturne, and your foolish friend," Snape said in a softer and more sinister voice, "If I catch you entering my office again, then I think I don't need to say anything more."

"We never came near your office!" Harry said angrily, throwing aside his previous pretense of deafness.

"You'd better not lie to me!" Snape said in a low voice, his unfathomable black eyes staring fiercely into Harry's. "Gillweed, this is from my personal collection. I know who stole it."

Harry stared at Snape without showing any weakness, and he refused to blink or show any guilt.

To be honest, he didn't think Snape had any evidence and he was just deceiving them.

"I don't know what you're talking about," said Harry coldly.

"You think you're perfect, don't you?" Snape hissed. "I can't hide this from you, Potter! I'll let it go this time, but I won't tolerate your behavior again! If you dare to sneak into my office in the middle of the night again, Potter, you'll see what happens!"

Snape glared fiercely at Lamia and Harry, who remained silent.

"Okay," Harry said calmly, returning to chopping his ginger root. "I'll keep that in mind in case I ever get the urge to go."

Snape was about to leave after giving the warning, but when he heard this, he turned his head again and said, "Potter, do you think I can't do anything to you if I pursue you?"

"Professor, Harry didn't mean that. We should continue making the potion." Lamia finally raised her head, but her calm eyes made Snape even more furious.

Snape's eyes were almost spitting fire, and he put a hand into his black robe. For a moment, Lamia thought Snape was going to draw his wand, and she was ready to take Harry and hide away, but - then she saw Snape take out a small crystal bottle, which contained a clear potion.

Lamia had a hunch that it wouldn't be anything good, at least for her and Harry.

"Do you know what this is, Potter?" said Snape, his eyes gleaming with malice again.

"I don't know," Harry said, and you could tell from his expression that he was telling the absolute truth.

"This is Veritaserum - a potion that teaches you to tell the truth. It is so powerful that just three drops will make you reveal your deepest secrets for the whole class to listen to." Snape said viciously.

"Of course, the Ministry of Magic has very strict regulations governing the use of this potion, but you must be extremely careful, or I'll make a mistake." He shook the crystal bottle slightly, his eyes darting between Lamia and Harry. "Pour it into the pumpkin juice with your dinner, and then... then we'll find out whether you've actually been to my office."

Harry didn't say anything this time. He looked at Lamia, but she was busy cutting her ginger roots. Harry lowered his head silently and turned to his ginger roots. He picked up the knife and started cutting them into pieces again.

Lamia didn't think she would fall for it, and Snape was obviously trying to scare them. Veritaserum was so precious, how could he possibly use it on two underage wizards?

But although these Lamias could think clearly, Harry might not. He was really guilty. Even if Snape didn't use Veritaserum, the students present could see that he had something to hide.

Snape looked at Harry's deflated expression with great satisfaction. Just as he was about to say something sarcastic, someone knocked on the classroom door from outside.

"Come in," Snape said in his usual voice.

The door opened and the whole class turned to look. Professor Karkaroff walked in and everyone watched him walk towards Snape's podium.

He twirled his goatee with his fingers, looking restless.

"We need to talk," Karkaroff said abruptly as he reached Snape, and he seemed determined not to let anyone hear what he said, so his lips barely moved, as if he were a very poor ventriloquist.

But Lamia could easily hear the conversation between the two, especially Snape's undisguised voice.

"It's class time now, let's talk after class, Karkaroff." Snape whispered, but Karkaroff interrupted him.

"No, now, Severus, you always hide from me, I must take advantage of this moment while you can't escape!"

"I told you, it's class time!" Snape said sternly.

Lamia looked up seemingly unintentionally, Karkaroff looked panicked, and Snape looked very angry.

For the rest of those two classes, Karkaroff lingered behind Snape's desk, seemingly determined not to let Snape slip away after class.

Lamia wanted to continue observing Snape's expression, but he obviously noticed it and deliberately frowned, unable to tell anything.

Lamia still wanted to hear what Karkaroff had to say, so after the bell rang, she hid under the table. That way, when all the students had left, she would be able to hear them even if they were talking at the back of the room.

Harry had the same idea as her, and Hermione of course wanted to stay, but Lamia felt that if something happened, she could still turn into a bat and escape, but Hermione couldn't, so she forcefully drove Hermione away.

But Harry refused to leave. He had knocked over the cauldron and was now wiping it with a rag, but his mind was highly focused on the two black-robed wizards at the back of the classroom.

"What happened that has you in such a hurry?" Lamia heard Snape say to Karkaroff in a low voice.

"Look," Karkaroff said. Lamia saw Karkaroff lift up the left sleeve of his robe and show Snape something on his forearm. Lamia seemed to have seen that thing before. It was a tattoo.

"Well?" Karkaroff said, trying hard not to move his lips, though they trembled constantly. "See? I bet you've been too, ever since that girl..."

"Shut up!" Snape said fiercely, his dark eyes scanning the classroom. "Hide your arm!"

"Tell me, is he coming? You must have some idea, right?" Karkaroff said anxiously.

"Now is not the time to talk about this, we will talk about it later!" Snape said harshly, "Potter, what are you doing!"

"Clean up this toad bile I spilled, Professor," said Harry innocently, straightening up and holding up the wet rag to Snape.

Harry deliberately blocked Lamia's direction so that she could not be easily seen by Snape, but Lamia was very foresighted. The moment Snape called Harry up, she turned into a bat and hid under the chair.

Karkaroff turned and strode out of the classroom, looking worried and annoyed.

Harry didn't want to be alone with an angry Snape, but he was also worried that Lamia would be discovered without him, so he packed his bag very slowly.
