Chapter 235 New Semester (1)
The carriage passed through a gate with sculptures of winged wild boars on either side and drove along a wide driveway, shaking violently due to the strong wind.
Lamia leaned against the car window and saw Hogwarts getting closer and closer, the many lighted windows gleaming vaguely behind the thick curtain of rain.
Their carriage stopped at the foot of the stone steps in front of the two oak doors. At this moment, a flash of lightning streaked across the sky, and the people in the carriage in front hurriedly climbed the stone steps and ran into the castle.
Lamia and Harry were not in the same carriage, so she was alone when she jumped out of the carriage.
Lamia ran up the stone steps in two steps, three steps at a time, until she entered the cave-like deep hall. She saw torches lit in the hall, the marble staircase was extraordinary, and Hermione and others were standing in front waiting for her.
"Good Lord," said Ron, shaking his head so that the water splashed everywhere. "If it keeps raining like this the lake's going to flood. I'm soaked to the skin—oh my!"
A large red balloon filled with water dropped from the ceiling and exploded above Ron's head.
Ron was soaked to the skin, mumbling something, and stumbled over to fall on Harry beside him.
Just then, a second water bomb fell, narrowly missing Hermione, and exploded at Harry's feet, spraying icy water onto his sneakers and soaking his socks.
The people around were screaming and pushing each other, all wanting to leave this dangerous place as soon as possible. Lamia looked up and saw Peeves, the mischievous ghost, floating twenty feet above their heads.
He was a short man wearing a hat with bells on it and an orange bow tie. He took aim again, the muscles on his broad, playful face tense.
He noticed Lamia's gaze, smiled cunningly, and threw the red balloon in his hand towards her. However, Lamia didn't move, but the balloon seemed to have suddenly grown eyes and hit Peeves in the back.
"Peeves!" an angry voice shouted. "Peeves, get down here!"
Professor McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress and Head of Gryffindor House, rushed out of the Great Hall. The ground was so wet that she slipped and quickly grabbed Hermione's neck to avoid falling.
"Ouch—I'm sorry, Miss Granger—"
"It's okay, Professor!" Hermione gasped, rubbing her throat.
"Peeves, get down here right now!" roared Professor McGonagall, adjusting her pointed hat and glaring over her square spectacles.
"I didn't do anything!" Although Peeves didn't escape the balloon and was soaked all over, he was not afraid at all. He still giggled and threw a water bomb at several fifth-grade girls. The girls were so scared that they screamed and rushed into the auditorium.
"They're already wet anyway, right? Hey, little brat! Take my shot!" He picked up another water bomb and aimed at a group of second-grade students who had just entered.
"I'm going to get the Headmaster!" cried Professor McGonagall. "I'm warning you, Peeves—"
Peeves stuck out his tongue, threw a few last water bombs into the air, and then scurried up the marble stairs, cackling madly.
"Well, let's go!" Professor McGonagall said sternly to the soaked crowd. "Get into the Great Hall, quick!"
Harry, Ron and Hermione walked through the hallway with one slip and one slide. Lamia kept a certain distance from them. After all, her nominal head of house, Snape, was sitting there, and Lamia didn't want to be put in detention again.
They passed through the double doors on the right, Ron muttering angrily under his breath and pushing his wet hair out of his face.
The hall was still magnificent, and it was decorated for the new term banquet. Hundreds of candles floated above the tables, making the golden plates and goblets sparkle.
The four long college tables were already filled with chattering students, and at the top of the hall there was a fifth table where the faculty sat on either side, facing their students. It was much warmer here.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione walked past the students from Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff, and then sat at the table at the end of the hall with the other Gryffindor students.
When Lamia passed by the Slytherin table, she was about to sit down, but everyone with an empty seat next to her said that it was taken, so that Lamia could not find a place where she could sit down at the entire Slytherin table.
Draco snorted, as if waiting for Lamia to ask him, after all, it was the only empty seat next to him, although he had reserved it for her.
But Lamia acted as if she hadn't seen anything and walked straight towards Hermione, who had reserved a seat for her nearby.
Draco's angry voice could be heard clearly behind Lamia, but she did not turn around. Even after she sat down, Lamia did not even look at Draco.
Above, Snape looked at the hint of green in the red robe with mockery, wondering what he was thinking.
After Lamia sat down, she saw that the ghost of Gryffindor College, Nearly Headless Nick, was next to her.
Nick, translucent and pearly white, wore his usual doublet tonight, but with an extra-large ruff that served the dual purpose of adding a festive touch and keeping his head from wobbling too much on his half-severed neck.
"Good evening," he said to them with a smile.
"What's good about that?" Harry said, taking off his sneakers and pouring out the water. "I really hope they start the sorting soon. I can't wait."
The sorting ceremony is held at the beginning of each new school year to assign new students to different colleges. Lamia just wants this part to pass quickly so that she doesn't have to stay here all the time.
Just then, a breathless voice came from the other end of the table.
"Hello, Harry!"
It was Colin Creevey, a third-year boy who had always regarded Harry as a hero.
Lamia looked at Colin, who was so excited that he only had eyes for Harry.
"Hello, Colin," Harry said carefully.
"Harry, guess what? Guess what, Harry? My brother's in school too! My brother Dennis!"
"Oh—great!" said Harry.
"He's so excited!" said Colin, actually jumping up and down in his chair. "I really hope he gets sorted into Gryffindor! Just pray for him, Harry, won't you?"
"Oh - yes, no problem," said Harry. He turned to Hermione, Ron, and Nearly Headless Nick and said, "Brothers and sisters usually end up in the same house, don't they?" He judged this based on the Weasley family: all seven of their children were sorted into Gryffindor.
