Chapter 221 Chaos (1)
Lamia stood aside, squinting her eyes as she studied them carefully—these people seemed faceless, and then she realized they had hoods on their heads and masks covering their faces.
Above their heads, four struggling figures floated in the air, twisted into all kinds of strange shapes, as if the masked wizards on the ground were puppeteers, and the figures above them were marionettes, controlled by invisible strings rising from wands into the air. Two of the figures were very small.
More wizards joined the advancing procession, laughing loudly and pointing at several bodies floating above. As the procession continued to grow, the tent was squeezed and collapsed.
Lamia even saw a lot of wizard supplies scattered all over the floor, and the whole place was a mess.
One of the marchers used a magic wand to light several tents on the roadside. The screams became louder.
As the floating figures passed over the burning tents, suddenly illuminated by the firelight, Lamia recognized one of them as Mr. Roberts, the camp manager.
His children and wife were also hung in the sky by the marchers' magic wands. They were now naked and were pulling at their dresses that were almost flying up in panic. The marchers laughed unscrupulously.
"Disgusting," muttered Ron, looking at the smallest Muggle child, who, sixty feet in the air, began to spin like a top, his head tilting limply from side to side. "This is outrageous..."
Just then, Bill, Charlie, and Percy ran over from the other side, their sleeves rolled up high and their wands in hand.
"We need to help the Ministry maintain order!" Mr. Weasley said over the clamor, rolling up his sleeves. "You people—get into the woods, stay together, and don't disperse. I'll come find you when this is resolved!"
Bill, Charlie, and Percy were already running towards the oncoming parade, with Mr. Weasley hurrying after them. Ministry staff were rushing towards the scene from all directions. The group below the Roberts family was getting closer and closer.
"Come on," said Fred, grabbing Lamia's hand and dragging her towards the woods, followed by Harry, Ron, Hermione, Luna, and George.
As they entered the woods, they all looked over their shoulders and saw that the column below the Roberts family had grown even larger than before. They could see the Ministry's wizarding staff desperately trying to get in and reach the hooded wizards in the center, but they were having great difficulty. It seemed that they were afraid to cast any magic for fear of causing the Roberts family to fall.
The colored lights that had illuminated the path to the gym were now out, and dark figures stumbled among the trees. Children cried, and nervous, anxious shouts and voices echoed in the cold night air around them.
Lamia felt herself being pushed around by the crowd, but she couldn't see the faces of these people clearly. Unease and irritability filled Lamia's heart.
At this moment, Ron suddenly shouted loudly.
"What's going on?" Hermione asked nervously, stopping suddenly as Harry bumped into her. "Ron, where are you? Oh, we're so stupid - Lumos!"
She lit her wand, illuminating the narrow path with a beam of light. Ron lay huddled on the ground.
"I tripped over a tree root." He said angrily, standing up from the ground.
"Hmph, with those legs, it's hard not to trip." A drawling voice sounded behind them.
The group turned sharply, and Lamia saw Draco standing alone nearby, leaning against a tree, looking relaxed and content.
He had his arms folded and had apparently been looking through the trees at the chaotic scene in the camp.
Ron said something rude to Draco, something he would never have dared to say if Mrs. Weasley were present.
"Speak more clearly," Draco said, his grey eyes gleaming in the night. "I think you'd better make haste and run! You don't want her to be discovered, do you?"
"Shut up, Draco," Lamia said.
"Traitor! Traitor to Slytherin!" Draco shouted at Lamia in grievance. He still didn't understand why Lamia would hang out with such a group of Gryffindors.
"Whatever you want, Draco, but now, you'd better get out of the way." There was no emotion in Lamia's calm eyes.
At this moment, there was a loud noise from the camp, like a bomb being dropped, and a green light instantly illuminated the trees around them.
"What have you done!" Hermione was startled and moved closer to Lamia.
"Granger, they're after Muggles," said Draco. "Would you rather flash your underpants in mid-air? If you do, stay right here... They're coming this way, and we can all have a good laugh."
"Hermione is a witch," Harry shouted angrily.
"As you wish, Potter," said Draco, a grim smile on his face. "If you don't think they can recognize a Mudblood, then you can stay here."
"Watch what you say!" Ron shouted.
"Ignore him, Ron," Hermione said hastily. She saw Ron take a step towards Draco and quickly grabbed Ron's arm to stop him.
There was a sudden explosion from the other side of the woods, louder than anything they had ever heard. Several people nearby screamed, and Draco let out a soft laugh.
"Look, Lamia, those guys you're with are so easily frightened. They're in such a mess," he drawled. "I suppose your dad's told you all to hide? What's he going to do—rescue those Muggles?"
"Where are your parents?" Harry said, furious. "Over there, wearing masks, aren't they?"
Draco turned to face Harry, still smiling.
"I say... even if they were... I wouldn't want to tell you, would I, Potter?"
"Oh, come on," Hermione said, giving Draco a look of disgust and taking Lamia's arm, "Let's go find someone else."
"Keep your big hairy head down, Granger," Draco sneered, his eyes lingering on her arm.
"Go," Hermione said again, ignoring Draco.
……
"I bet you his dad was one of those masked guys!" said Ron angrily.
"With any luck, the Ministry will catch him!" said Hermione excitedly. "Oh, I can't believe this. Where are the others?"
Fred, George, Luna, and Ginny were nowhere to be seen. The path was now densely packed with people, all nervously turning their heads to look in the direction of the commotion in the camp.
On the side of the path, a group of boys and girls in colorful clothes huddled together, arguing loudly about something.
When they saw Lamia and the others, a little girl with thick curly hair turned around and said quickly: "Where is Madame Maxime? We can't find her--"
"Um - what?" said Ron.
"Oh..." The little girl turned back again, and as they continued walking forward, they clearly heard her say, "Hogwarts."
