End of the World Crisis, My Husband is from Ancient Times
Chapter 9 Chicken and Rabbit in the Same Cage
Wisdom and skillful exhibition, initial recognition
The study was filled with the heavy scent of sandalwood. The light was dim, and the bookshelves were filled with ancient tomes. The air seemed to be filled with the dust of history. Fan Mengmeng nervously twisted her fingers, her heart beating like a drum. Teng Junze sat on a carved mahogany chair, holding an ancient book in his hands, his eyes as deep as a lake, unfathomable.
"This book records some difficult questions. If you can answer one or two, I will trust you a little more." Teng Junze pushed the book in front of Fan Mengmeng.
Fan Mengmeng took a deep breath and flipped open the ancient book. The pages were yellowed, and the words were complex and obscure, like tiny tadpoles dancing. She struggled to decipher them, discovering they contained ancient puzzles and arithmetic problems.
"Problem 1: There are chickens and rabbits in the same cage. There are thirty-five chickens and rabbits on top and ninety-four legs on the bottom. How many chickens and rabbits are there?" Fan Mengmeng was secretly delighted after reading the question. For modern people, this problem is just an elementary school math word problem.
She quickly wrote down a system of linear equations in her mind and quickly figured out the answer: "Twenty-three chickens, twelve rabbits."
Teng Junze raised his eyebrows slightly, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes. He had originally thought that these difficult questions would stump Fan Mengmeng, but he had not expected her to solve them so quickly.
"Next question." He turned to the next page.
Fan Mengmeng also easily solved the next few questions. From logical reasoning to mathematical calculations, her modern thinking impressed Teng Junze. His originally tense expression gradually relaxed, and his eyes showed a hint of admiration.
"It seems that you are not completely useless." Teng Junze put down the book in his hand and his tone softened a little.
Fan Mengmeng was delighted, her heart finally at ease. Just when she thought she had initially gained Teng Junze's trust, the door to the study suddenly opened, and a woman in a pink dress walked in.
"Brother Junze," the woman called out coquettishly. When her eyes fell on Fan Mengmeng, they instantly became fierce. "Who is this woman?"
The air suddenly froze, and Fan Mengmeng felt an ominous premonition...
Miss Lin walked over slowly, her eyebrows raised, and pointed at Fan Mengmeng and asked sharply: "Brother Junze, who is this country woman? Why is she in your study?" The contempt in her tone was not concealed at all, and the look she gave Fan Mengmeng was as if she was looking at a rag stained with mud.
Seeing this, Xiaofu hurried forward to explain: "Miss Lin, this is..."
"Did I ask you?" Miss Lin interrupted Xiaofu harshly. Her domineering attitude silenced him, and he could only look at Fan Mengmeng anxiously. Fan Mengmeng, sensing Xiaofu's gaze, felt even more uneasy. She was already unfamiliar with ancient etiquette and rules, and now, faced with Miss Lin's aggressiveness, she felt even more bewildered.
Teng Junze put down the book in his hand, frowning slightly. "Lin Shu, don't be rude." His tone was a bit reproachful, but not harsh.
Seeing that Teng Junze didn't directly defend Fan Mengmeng, Lin Shu, also known as Miss Lin, became bolder. She stepped forward, grabbed Teng Junze's sleeve, and said delicately, "Brother Junze, this woman has an unknown origin and speaks strangely. Could she be a witch? You'd better be careful!"
Fan Mengmeng was shocked when she heard this and quickly tried to explain: "I'm not a witch, I'm just..."
"Shut up!" Lin Shu interrupted her again, "She's spreading rumors to confuse people! Brother Junze, you can't be fooled by her!"
Teng Junze looked at the two people in front of him: his cousin, whom he had grown up with, and a woman he found somewhat peculiar. Lin Shu's words made him suspicious. He recalled Fan Mengmeng's bizarre remarks and actions. Could it be that she was a demon, as Lin Shu had said?
He looked at Fan Mengmeng, then at Lin Shu, his eyes flickering, and he hesitated, "This..."
Seeing Teng Junze wavering, Fan Mengmeng felt anxious. She pulled out a palm-sized metal disc from her pocket...
Fan Mengmeng pulled a palm-sized metal disc from her pocket—a modern portable magnifying glass. She took a deep breath and pointed the magnifying glass at the tiny, indecipherable mark on the ancient text that Teng Junze had previously pointed out. "Everyone, please look," she adjusted the magnifying glass, "this mark..."
Under the magnifying glass, the originally blurry mark was instantly magnified several times, appearing clearly before everyone. It was an extremely small seal character, almost impossible to discern with the naked eye without the aid of tools.
The room was completely silent, everyone was stunned by this magical "treasure". Lin Shu's eyes widened, and he covered his mouth in disbelief, as if he had seen a ghost.
A flicker of surprise flashed in Teng Junze's eyes. He took the magnifying glass and examined it carefully. He then flipped through several other pages and discovered that similar tiny marks could be clearly magnified. For the first time, he looked at Fan Mengmeng with a hint of inquiry and appreciation.
"What...what is this?" There was a barely perceptible tremor in his voice.
"It's called a magnifying glass," Fan Mengmeng explained. "It can magnify tiny objects." She paused and added, "I have many more magical things like this."
Xiaofu was stunned watching from the side. He couldn't help but exclaim in admiration: "This girl is really powerful! This thing is unheard of!"
Seeing this, Lin Shu felt even more jealous. She shrieked, "They're just some fancy tricks. What can they prove? They might have been conjured up by some demonic being!"
Xiaofu couldn't help but stand up and refute, "Miss Lin, you're going too far! You're clearly helping me solve a problem, how can you make such malicious assumptions?" He paused, then gave Lin Shu a meaningful look, "I think you're jealous, aren't you?"
Lin Shu's face darkened, and he was about to retort when Teng Junze interrupted him. "Lin Shu, that's enough!" He said sternly, with a hint of warning in his voice, "Don't be rude to Miss Fan again."
Lin Shu bit her lip in grievance, not daring to say anything else.
Fan Mengmeng looked at Xiaofu gratefully, feeling a little relieved. Although Teng Junze acknowledged her abilities, a hint of doubt lingered in his eyes. He instructed Xiaofu to put the ancient book away, then said to Fan Mengmeng, "Thank you, Miss Fan, for what you did today."
Fan Mengmeng quickly waved her hands: "It's just a small favor."
Teng Junze nodded and didn't say anything else. He just asked Xiaofu to send Fan Mengmeng back to her room.
After Fan Mengmeng left, Teng Junze called the secret guard and whispered, "Go and check Fan Mengmeng's background. Report everything to me, no matter how big or small." He had a vague feeling that this woman was hiding many secrets.
