End of the World Crisis, My Husband is from Ancient Times
Chapter 8 Hostility
Fan Mengmeng's eyes blurred. The car, Uncle Li, and the gray, apocalyptic sky vanished. In their place were ancient buildings with carved beams and painted rafters, and the air was filled with the faint scent of sandalwood. She was startled. Could it be... I'd traveled through time again?
This time, their destination seemed to be an antique courtyard, complete with rockery, flowing water, and exotic flowers and plants—all exquisitely appointed. However, this exquisite beauty couldn't alleviate Fan Mengmeng's nervousness. The servants around her, dressed in simple, traditional clothing, regarded her with wariness and a touch of disdain. The sound of whispers reached her ears. Although she couldn't understand what they were saying, Fan Mengmeng instinctively sensed that their words weren't well-intentioned.
An elderly man with graying hair and a dark robe, leaning on a cane, emerged from the crowd. He looked Fan Mengmeng up and down, his cloudy eyes scrutinizing her. "Who are you? Why have you suddenly appeared in this mansion?" the old man's voice carried undeniable authority.
Fan Mengmeng took a deep breath and tried to remain calm. "Hello, my name is Fan Mengmeng. I don't know why I'm here. Maybe... I'm lost?" She tried to use modern and polite language, hoping her explanation would be acceptable.
The old housekeeper was obviously not expecting her to answer like that and was stunned for a moment. This woman's words were strange, and her behavior was also different from that of ordinary women. Could it be...
At this moment, a deep and magnetic voice came from behind: "Lost?"
Fan Mengmeng turned and saw a man in a brocade robe slowly approaching. He had a handsome face, a subtle coldness between his brows, and exuded the aura of a superior. This man was Teng Junze.
Teng Junze's gaze fell on Fan Mengmeng, sharp as a hawk. "Such a clumsy lie, do you think I would believe it?"
Fan Mengmeng's heart sank. It seemed that this ancient gentleman was not as easy to fool as he seemed.
Seeing this, the old housekeeper quickly agreed: "Sir, this woman's origins are unknown, I'm afraid..."
Teng Junze raised his hand to interrupt the old housekeeper, his eyes still fixed on Fan Mengmeng. "Take her away and keep her under strict supervision."
"Yes." Two guards responded and "invited" Fan Mengmeng down from the left and right.
Fan Mengmeng groaned inwardly. What was going on? How could she be imprisoned before she even understood the situation? She tried to explain, but was rudely interrupted by the guards.
After being led to a simple room, Fan Mengmeng sat dejectedly on a cold wooden bench. She stared out the window at the closed door, feeling overwhelmed with powerlessness. "I... really just got lost..."
The room was dim and damp, with only a thin ray of light filtering through a small window. Fan Mengmeng huddled in a corner, her thin clothing barely enough to withstand the night's chill. She folded her arms and shivered, feeling like a caged animal, helpless and lost.
At this moment, footsteps were heard outside the door, and a maid came in carrying a rough meal. "Eat." The maid said in a cold tone, put the meal heavily on the ground, and turned to leave without even looking at Fan Mengmeng.
Fan Mengmeng looked at the bowl of rotten food on the ground, her stomach churning. She suppressed her nausea and forced herself to drink a few mouthfuls of porridge, but her stomach was still empty.
"Master Teng, this woman is really suspicious. I think we should just let her go..." The old housekeeper stood beside Teng Junze and spoke in a low voice.
Teng Junze stood with his hands behind his back, gazing out the window at the pitch-black night, his eyes dark and unfathomable. "Wait a little longer, I want to see what she's up to."
Fan Mengmeng was unaware of Teng Junze's suspicions about her. She only knew she needed to prove her innocence. She stood up, walked to the door, and banged on it. "Let me out! I mean no harm! Just listen to my explanation!"
However, the only response she got was the guard's cold voice: "Don't waste your energy. The Master has ordered that no one is allowed to approach."
Fan Mengmeng leaned against the door dejectedly, her heart filled with despair. Was she really going to be trapped in this strange place?
The next morning, Fan Mengmeng was awakened by a loud noise. She walked to the window and saw a crowd of people gathered in the yard, seemingly watching something. She stood on tiptoe, trying to see what was happening.
A complex mechanical device sat in the center of the courtyard, with several artisans gathered around it, at a loss as to how to fix it. Teng Junze stood nearby, his brow furrowed, clearly at a loss as to how to fix the device.
Fan Mengmeng looked at the device and suddenly had an idea. She remembered the physics she had learned in college... "Wait," Fan Mengmeng flung open the door and rushed into the yard, "I know how this mechanism works!"
Fan Mengmeng's shout drew everyone's attention to her. Ignoring the hostile gazes, she walked directly to the mechanism, pointed at one of the components, and said, "This gear is installed in the wrong position. It should be rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise."
The craftsmen looked at each other in bewilderment, whispering among themselves. The old steward stepped forward and sternly scolded them, "How dare you, a woman of unknown origin, discuss the master's mechanism!"
Fan Mengmeng looked him in the eye without fear: "If you don't believe me, you can try it."
Teng Junze remained silent, his sharp gaze fixed on Fan Mengmeng. He had originally planned to have the woman kicked out, but after hearing her words, a hint of curiosity arose in his heart. He waved his hand, signaling the craftsmen to do as Fan Mengmeng instructed.
Although the craftsmen were puzzled, they did not dare to disobey Teng Junze's order and had to carefully adjust the position of the gear. Surprisingly, as the gear turned, the mechanism that had been stuck actually started to work!
Everyone was in an uproar, and even Teng Junze couldn't help but raise an eyebrow. He hadn't expected that this seemingly weak woman could actually understand the art of mechanical devices.
At this time, a little maid with two buns, named Xiaofu, timidly walked to Teng Junze and whispered, "Sir, this girl may really have no ill intentions..." Xiaofu was the maid responsible for taking care of Fan Mengmeng's food, clothing, and daily life. Although they had not been together for a long time, she could feel Fan Mengmeng's kindness and helplessness.
Teng Junze's eyes flickered between Fan Mengmeng and Xiaofu, and he finally spoke slowly, "Let her come over."
Fan Mengmeng was delighted and quickly walked over to Teng Junze. She knew this might be her only chance.
"How do you prove that you are not a spy?" Teng Junze's voice was low and full of majesty.
Fan Mengmeng was speechless. How could she prove it? She came from another time and space, and she couldn't explain her origins at all.
Seeing her silence, Teng Junze's eyes flashed with a hint of coldness: "It seems that you really are..."
"Sir, please give her a chance to explain," Xiaofu said with courage again, "I believe she is not a bad person."
Teng Junze looked at Xiaofu deeply, and finally relented: "I'll give you a chance, but if you can't prove your innocence, don't blame me for being cruel."
"Follow me." Teng Junze turned and walked towards the study, leaving Fan Mengmeng standing there anxiously. She took a deep breath, trying to remain calm, and followed him. The study door slowly closed behind her, and Fan Mengmeng felt an inexplicable pressure coming over her... "Go ahead," Teng Junze's voice sounded particularly cold in the silent study. "I'm listening."
