Chapter 99: The Voyage of Oceanus (Part 2)
The ship "Essembad" has slowly left the port.
There were two other ladies on the deck talking in low voices. One of them noticed everyone's gazes and took the initiative to step forward and say hello.
"Nice to meet you, everyone. I'm the taxidermist for the research team, and also the ship's doctor." The taxidermist (Doctor - Everlasting Flower) approached and looked at the mercenary. "If I'm not mistaken, you must be the collector that gentleman mentioned."
Conan carefully observed the taxidermist. She was wearing a sea-blue dress, with a decoration on her head that looked like a sea lily. She was carrying a tool kit and wearing a pair of white gloves. She looked like a meticulous person.
The mercenary stepped forward and replied, "Nice to meet you. I'm one of the partners in this research project, a natural history collector."
"I hope our research team can collect precious biological samples as expected. I look forward to your work and a pleasant cooperation."
"Also, this is Mr. Frederick Kreberg, who is also the partner of that gentleman. He is a composer and he will bring his friends to sightsee on the ship. I hope our scientific research work will not disturb them." The mercenary pointed to the composers standing aside.
"Oh, of course. Our voyage to Oceanus will certainly meet your expectations."
Another woman, unusual in stature, stepped forward and introduced herself. "Hello, Mr. Collector, it's a pleasure to meet you. And, of course, welcome to Mr. Kreiberg and the tourists. I'm a cartographer, and I planned this route. I hope you have a pleasant trip."
The image of the cartographer (Spider-Mercator projection) really shocked Conan. She seemed to be walking on the ground. The only part that could be seen as a human form looked like a rather mysterious woman. She wore a dark purple hat, and her black hair was pinned behind her ears and head with beads and metal rings. Her lower body was completely hidden under the heavy drawings. Brass compasses and rulers constituted her mechanical limbs, and she carried a drawn nautical chart on her back.
Before Conan could take a closer look at the sea chart and patterns of strange beasts painted on her back, she left with the taxidermist.
Next came two men dressed in academic attire: a meticulously dressed meteorologist, and an acoustician in his bachelor's robes. Both said they had been invited by "that gentleman" to conduct research. They also mentioned the voyage that Professor Brownlie and Professor Schelling had taken twenty-five years earlier.
After the two men walked away, the group gathered together to exchange information. The first person to be questioned was Kaito Kidd, who was completely unexpected by everyone.
Kaito Kidd was helpless, saying that he was only asked to steal the most precious biological sample on the ship so that he could get some very important information. Then he was kicked out of the group chat.
"Biological samples?" The mercenary frowned. "There's no way this ship could have had any biological samples on board before entering the Oceanus."
"So what do you know? What is your mission as a collector?" Subaru Okiya asked the mercenary.
"The partner DM you're talking about is probably the guy who sent the letter provoking us this time, codenamed 'Photographer,' who pursues immortality and even hopes to resurrect the dead," the mercenary pondered. "He's been forming cliques within the organization lately, and quite a few people have been drawn to him."
"The 'Soul of the Umbrella' you met at the dock are the brothers. They're quite unhappy about this and are planning to gather a group to fight him. Miss Qi has been busy with this recently." The mercenary looked at Subaru Okiya. "She probably doesn't want you getting involved in this mess."
"The intelligence I received is that this voyage is a test for a new member. The 'photographer' challenged us to find his new recruit first if we can. If we can't find him, everyone on this ship will be in danger."
"My companion forged this identity for me so that I could board this ship. To be honest, for this operation, I was forced to read a lot of information about marine life and wear this 'fashionable' collector's clothing... The key is that I don't think such a disguise can be hidden from DM, this cunning guy." The mercenary held his forehead helplessly.
"That's really muddy waters." The composer frowned. "I'm sorry, Orpheus, I didn't expect the situation to be so serious."
"It's not your fault. I was a little too stubborn." The novelist rubbed his brow. "I should have thought of both 'Esambad' and 'Okeanos' earlier."
"Legend has it that the 'Esembard' visited the sea called 'Okeanos' twenty-five years ago and suffered a shipwreck there. Almost everyone on board was killed. According to several survivors, the ship encountered some supernatural phenomenon."
The mercenary nodded. "You're right. The so-called supernatural phenomena are probably what attracts 'photographers'."
"Of course, I would rather talk to you about Eurydice, my Eurydice, my Alice, where did she go?" The novelist approached the mercenary and stared at him with somewhat angry eyes.
"If you're referring to Alice DeRose, I don't know much about her. Her codename was 'Reporter.' She attempted to defect after an experiment at the manor, but was 'recovered' by the supervisors who were sent there."
The novelist's eyes almost turned red: "At least let me know who that guy is and what his code name is? Tell me!"
"'Nightmare', that's his code name."
[Explorer: Is this what it means to be the murderer?]
[Reporter: To some extent, this is true.]
[Entomologist: Outrageous, but reasonable.]
Conan immediately reacted: "Ah, I've seen that guy before, a man wearing a crow head mask who likes to do all kinds of potion experiments."
"Perhaps she was used as a test subject by Nightmare," the mercenary thought. "Each Supervisor's base is private. I have no idea where she was taken."
"I will rescue her." The novelist clenched his fists.
Subaru Okiya brought the topic back on track: "Since this is the Oletus Organization's assessment of new members, do you have any ideas?"
"From what I know, the assessments for codename members at the Manor mostly involve completing a series of fixed tasks, but these tasks vary from person to person. The assessments for the action and research groups among the survivors are completely different. I don't know much about the supervisors, but I heard their assessments are all sorts of different."
Subaru Okiya digested the information provided by the mercenary: "Are there also groups in the survivor camp? I thought you only had survivors and supervisors."
"No, survivors and supervisors are the division of camps. Both camps have their own factions." The mercenary explained.
"As fellow survivors, I'm on the action team, Qi Shiyi is on the patrol team, and there's also a research team and a logistics team. The supervisors don't have a clear division of labor, and they rarely work together unless there's a special situation."
[Composer: Did you come up with this grouping?]
[Novelist: The survivors have positions for rescuing people, holding people back, repairing machines, and assisting. The supervisor's position is too chaotic, so I'm too lazy to score.]
"Your internal divisions are really complicated." Conan was stunned by the series of information bombardment.
The mercenary scratched his head. "This doesn't seem to be my problem. The most important thing now is to find that new member. Otherwise, everyone on the ship will be in danger."
The composer spoke from the sidelines: "I must remind you that a ship far from the coast is like an island in the ocean. When people are isolated at sea, that isolation and separation from modern civilization is like a magnifying glass, which amplifies the fears in everyone's heart and makes people forget the habits formed by social discipline."
"If we don't want to be manipulated by that so-called new member, I think we should take action now."
