Chapter 58: The Shadow of Belstein (Part 4)

The judge named Black Lily stood in the middle and announced the start of the trial.

"This court announces the commencement of the trial of Mandala, the former heir of the Belstein family. The prosecutor and the defense, please introduce yourselves."

Rosemary swayed and signed, "I, Tuberose, Dahlia, Prosecutor."

Tuberose glanced at Acorus and Conan who had come running, chuckled, and said, "I'm Tuberose, accompanying High Priest Rosemary to temporarily serve as the prosecutor. Oh, and of course, there's Mr. Dahlia."

Dahlia was annoyed because Tuberose had snatched the floor away from her, so she pushed him aside.

Conan took a breath and answered from the other side: "I am Edogawa Conan, a detective invited here to defend Miss Mandala."

"I'm his temporary assistant, Acorus." Acorus put her hands on her hips and looked at the tuberose opposite her.

Conan looked at the dock, but Miss Mandala was not there.

Judge Black Lily then announced, "Next, I invite the prosecutor to make his opening statement."

"The defendant, Mandragora, was arrested at the crime scene. Witnesses, come into court." Rosemary gestured with her hands, signaling several witnesses to come forward and speak.

Money Tree was the first to step forward and testify: "I was the guard outside Mandala's house. When we entered Mandala's house, she and another man were both collapsed on the table. Trumpet Creeper shook the man and confirmed that he was dead."

"The man's face was covered in small purple-red spots. The doctor on the island confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation. His mouth was wide open, and it was obvious that he was suffocated by the tablecloth when he tried to call for help."

Conan immediately retorted: "There is vomit on the tablecloth. If the person was suffocated to death, he would not have had the opportunity to vomit on the table. And the vomit is likely related to the cause of death."

Conan then took out the dead bee and said, "The purple spots on the victim's face should be caused by bee stings. The victim vomited because of poisoning."

"A beehive was found at the crime scene, encased in a music box, and the bees were inside."

Tuberose smiled and asked, "Could it be that the deceased's face was like a blooming flower, attracting bees on the night of the murder?"

"The deceased was attacked because he was wearing a flower with a special smell that attracted bees." Conan immediately took out the flower with special nectar as evidence.

"This court accepts your new evidence. The suffocation charge is not established. The victim died of poisoning." Judge Black Lily updated the case record.

Rosemary questioned again: "The cause of death, poisoning, Datura, suspicion, still the same."

Tuberose then added, "Even if the manner of death is changed, it still doesn't rule out Mandragora as a suspect, little detective."

Conan smiled confidently, looked back at Ayame beside him, and asked with a smile: "Mr. Tuberose, what is your definition of a murderer?"

"Of course the person who killed the victim is the murderer."

"If there is no deceased person, there is no murderer."

Everyone was in an uproar.

"You mean the victim is not dead? Then where is he now?"

Conan turned to look at Black Lily: "Madam Judge, please allow me to call a witness at the scene."

"That's Miss Ayame."

"What's the prosecutor's opinion?" Black Lily looked at Rosemary and the others.

Rosemary gestured, "Resurrection from the dead, bizarre, child's play, please do as you please."

"Then Ms. Ayame, please take the witness stand."

Conan looked at Ayame, who also looked back at him. Then Ayame smiled helplessly and walked up to the witness stand.

"So, Mr. Detective, how are you going to prove that I am the victim?"

"Ms. Ayame, the evidence is hidden under your gloves." Conan said, pointing at Ayame's hands.

"Before that, may I first ask how the prosecutor handled the victim's body?"

Rosemary used sign language to indicate that the body was buried in the backyard of her residence.

Conan smiled as if to expect it and continued reasoning.

"I found soil with purple-red petals in the high priest's backyard. The soil also showed signs of being disturbed. As long as you put your hands in the soil, your fingers will turn purple. I guess the juice from the petals has seeped into the soil."

"When the surviving victims crawl out of the dirt, their hands will inevitably be stained with that stain."

After listening to Conan's reasoning, Rosemary turned to Tuberose angrily.

"It seems that it was my negligence. After all, the body has been buried and no one will check it again." Tuberose bowed its head to apologize to Rosemary.

"There's another piece of evidence: traces of makeup on the tablecloth. This is enough to prove that Miss Ayame had come to the island disguised as a man. The purple spots on Miss Ayame's face are proof of that."

Upon hearing this, Chang Pu removed her makeup, revealing the purple-red sting marks.

Everyone gasped in surprise, while Black Lily maintained order in the courtroom.

"An outsider, staying on the island, hiding, why?" Rosemary asked Acorus using sign language.

"Please allow me to explain." Acorus covered his face with the top hat.

"I came to Bearstein in disguise and learned from Miss Mandragora that she was the heir, while Rosemary was an outsider who had become the high priestess by using a special plant."

"In order to help Miss Mandala, I decided to conduct an in-depth investigation."

Widowmaker concluded the case: "It seems that everything is clear now. The case does not need to be continued."

"Please bring up the suspect, Miss Mandala."

After Mandragora walked into court, Widowmaker announced: "Then, the verdict for Miss Mandragora in this case is - attempted murder."

"No!" Mandala retorted loudly. "I would never hurt Miss Acorus."

"I want to defend myself!"

"Defendant, please be as brief as possible." Judge Black Lily motioned for Mandala to continue.

Mandala loudly defended herself, "I've been under house arrest by the high priest. That music box and those bees were given to me by someone else. As for that flower, it was also someone else's work. Is there anyone on the island who knows more about plants than the high priest?"

"Originally, Miss Acorus promised me that she would bring people back to help me fight Rosemary, but that night, I put the flower on Miss Acorus's head."

"I clearly remember that night when I woke up and the islanders told me the news of Miss Ayame's death, the high priest was looking at me with a triumphant smile."

Tuberose crossed her arms and said, "How ridiculous! Your conflict with Rosemary is well known on the island. How could she prepare these things for you?"

Conan objected: "That's because Miss Ayame discovered the secret of making plant specimens on the island."

After saying this, Conan immediately felt the eyes behind the Tuberose mask locked onto him. Cold sweat broke out on his back, but he still had to reveal the whole truth.

"Rosemary didn't want her secret to be taken away from the island, so she wanted to get rid of Miss Ayame."

"But, I don't know whether it's out of a desire to maintain the rules of the island or a desire to keep the secret to oneself." Conan looked at Mandala: "Ms. Mandala, you betrayed Miss Ayame!"
