Oritis in the world of Detective Conan

Chapter 101: The Voyage of Oceanus (Part 4)

Conan and Subaru Okiya were also standing on the deck chatting.

"Mr. Okiya, who do you think the newcomer Mr. Sabeda is talking about is?"

"Maybe Miss Cartographer, or Miss Taxidermist."

"Kaito Kidd said those two members of Oritis asked him to steal a biological specimen, so the taxidermist is the more likely suspect."

As the two were chatting, a documentary reporter approached them and attempted to conduct an interview: "Good morning, gentlemen. As the few tourists on board, what are your thoughts on this voyage?"

Subaru Okiya replied, "We've heard from many people about the mysterious nature of the Oceanus Sea. I believe this trip will be a real treat for us all."

The documentary reporter smiled and said, "Although the scenery is beautiful, there is always the risk of seasickness on the boat. If you feel unwell, remember to go to the taxidermist. Especially you, little brother, children are prone to seasickness."

Conan nodded in agreement. After the documentary reporter left, he and Subaru Okiya continued to discuss the issue of taxidermists and cartographers.

"These two people must be related to this voyage. Perhaps we should go talk to them."

The two of them left as soon as they said they would, and found the taxidermist sitting on a chair resting in the banquet hall.

Conan took the initiative to step forward and greeted: "Good morning, Sister Taxidermy."

The taxidermist's expression didn't change much when she saw the two men approaching. Instead, she looked distant, a stark contrast to the warmth she had shown towards the mercenaries. "Hello, tourists. What can I do for you?"

"Well, I'm very interested in those marine creatures. Do you know much about them, sister?"

"Of course, the unique appearance of marine life is always fascinating. This voyage's destination, Oceanus, is a virgin area for biological discovery and a unique habitat."

Subaru Okiya asked politely, "You seem to know this sea area very well."

"'Okeanos', the sea at the end of the world, is named after the primitive god who embraced the ocean in Greek mythology. Of course, its value is worthy of this name." The taxidermist seemed to have thought of something and changed the subject.

"However, aside from some of the rumors about it, no one really knows much about this sea area."

"Rumor?" Conan also learned from the novelist that a shipwreck occurred twenty-five years ago.

"Many people believe that the shipwreck on the Oceanus twenty-five years ago was a curse. In my opinion, these are just clichés with no scientific basis. There are people on our ship who firmly believe in this."

"I really don't know why that gentleman wanted to allow people who firmly believe in curses to join the scientific expedition." The taxidermist turned his head away and muttered.

"Who is that gentleman?"

"I'm sorry, I have an obligation to protect my employer's personal information." After saying this, the taxidermist left the banquet hall.

At the same time, the cartographer walked in and took the initiative to greet Conan and the others.

"Oh, good day, gentlemen." The cartographer's mechanical structure clanked.

Subaru Okiya returned her greeting. "Good day, Miss Cartographer. Are you aware of the rumors regarding Oceanus?"

"Ah, do you two like mysterious legends about the sea?" The cartographer's expression became excited.

Conan used his usual baby voice: "Well, I love these mysterious legends the most! Sister, can you tell us about the rumors about this sea area?"

The cartographer's smile widened. "Of course, little brother."

"Twenty-five years ago, my father, the famous Professor Brownlee, was on this ship. He experienced that storm, those dark shadows, and the maddening roar..."

"My father never lied. He barely survived that shipwreck, but those scholars didn't believe him! My father has passed away, and most of his students died in that shipwreck. No one can prove what he said is true."

"That gentleman gave me a chance. Yes, I came here to prove that what my father said was true. The storm will come just like it did twenty-five years ago!"

"We'll have to wait and see, but unfortunately not everyone can remain sane while witnessing this."

Seeing the cartographer's expression becoming more and more fanatical, as if she desperately wanted them to believe her words, Subaru Okiya had no choice but to interrupt the topic.

"So, you and the taxidermist were both invited by that gentleman?"

"Of course, I'm the only one with the accurate chart! That taxidermist is too stubborn and lacks imagination. The door to truth won't open to such stubborn people."

The cartographer left somewhat unhappy after saying this.

"It seems that the so-called scientific research team is not a whole." Conan pushed his glasses and thought about it.

Subaru Okiya watched the cartographer's retreating figure and sighed, "I wonder if this voyage, destined to be troubled, will actually encounter a storm."

"Based on what everyone says, the DM wants to repeat the voyage from 25 years ago."

This day was the third day since the scientific research project officially started. The research vessel was getting closer and closer to the "Okeanos" waters. What no one expected was that the originally clear weather suddenly changed and a storm hit the ship that was carrying out salvage operations.

As the wind and waves grew stronger, the wooden boxes on the deck began to tremble and rolled from one side of the railing to the other, and the trawl net was almost torn apart.

Such a change was beyond everyone's expectations. The sea water splashed onto the deck with the wind and waves. Conan's small body was a little unstable due to the shaking of the hull. Subaru Okiya held his hand tightly.

"Stop working and go back to the cabin!" In order to prevent his voice from being drowned out by the sound of the wind and waves, the taxidermist almost shouted at the top of his lungs, while the other scientific researchers hurriedly packed up their equipment.

The cartographer declared loudly amid the wind and waves: "No, I will not leave here! Did you all see? My father was right, the storm has really come, and everything that follows will come true!"

The mercenary dragged the two to the banquet hall, where several sailors were trying to calm everyone down.

"Oh, that's terrible. I'm almost soaked." The novelist took off his wet coat.

The composer sat next to the novelist and watched Conan and the other two running in.

At this moment in the banquet hall, the waiter was cleaning up the dishes that had just been broken by the shaking of the ship. She even had the leisure to ask everyone if they wanted a drink to warm themselves up.

The pilot loudly announced that this level of wind and waves would not affect the safety of the passengers, and then reassigned tasks to the seamen, while the engineer silently checked the operation of various machines.

Conan noticed that there was coal dust on the engineer's shoes, probably from when he was on patrol in the boiler room.

Conan and his group gathered together, while Kaito Kid sat far away on the other side of the banquet hall.

The composer and the novelist chatted, "Shipwrecks are a perfect subject for a novel. You've had an unexpected surprise."

"Stop teasing me." The novelist wiped the sea water off his face with a towel.

The mercenary finished a bowl of tomato soup. "The taxidermist scoffs at the so-called supernatural phenomena, while the cartographer is a fanatical follower of them. Such diametrically opposed attitudes. I really don't understand what the DM is thinking."

Conan sat next to Okiya Subaru and said, "DM invited these researchers to try to recreate the voyage that took place 25 years ago. He seems to be trying to verify something."

The mercenary snorted coldly. "Hmph, does he want to see whether science and reason prevail, or does he want to see the power of the so-called supernatural phenomena? Ultimately, he doesn't care about anyone on this ship. He just wants results."

As they were discussing, they saw the cartographer being dragged back to the banquet hall by the taxidermist. The two seemed to be having a big argument.
