God Slayer: Make Up for the Past
Chapter 97: The Truth Hidden in the Mist: Fragments Emerge
Murong Xue stopped walking but didn't look back. "What's wrong?" Her voice sounded vague, as if it came from far away.
Chu Feng hesitated for a moment, then finally shook his head. "Nothing." He retracted his gaze and looked back at the markings on the wall. Murong Xue's strange behavior made him even more uneasy, but he didn't have time to delve into it. The safety of the missing person was the most important thing.
"These markings... look like some kind of map." Pan Yue's voice came from behind. He had come to Chu Feng's side without him noticing, and was also carefully observing the markings on the wall. "Look, these lines and symbols seem to indicate a certain direction."
Chu Feng nodded, having noticed this as well. "But this direction... seems to be pointing underground." He shone his flashlight in the direction of the mark and found only a thick stone wall there.
"Underground?" Night Watchman Overseer Li walked over, his tone filled with disdain. "I think you're just imagining things. How could there be an underground passage here?"
"But these marks..." Chu Feng tried to explain, but was rudely interrupted by Li, the Night Watch Supervisor.
"Enough!" he said sternly. "Stop wasting time! You've already wasted too long here and haven't found any valuable clues. Now, I order you to continue searching the dense forest to the west. People have recently disappeared there too."
Chu Feng clenched his fists tightly, feeling a surge of anger burning in his chest. It was clear that Night's Watch Supervisor Li was deliberately trying to make things difficult for him, assigning him a more dangerous mission. The dense forests to the west were notoriously dangerous, and even experienced Night's Watch members didn't dare venture in.
"Supervisor Li, the dense forest in the west is too dangerous. We are just trainee night watchmen..." Pan Yue tried to persuade him, but Supervisor Li ignored him.
"Follow orders!" He said this coldly, turned and left the tree hole.
The voices of Zhou's missing family members were heard again, filled with despair and pleading: "Please, please find my child..."
Chu Feng took a deep breath, suppressing the rage within him. He couldn't let his emotions sway him; he had to remain calm, to find the missing person, to prove himself. He glanced at the markings on the wall, silently memorizing their location and shape.
"Let's go, Pan Yue." He whispered and turned to walk out of the tree hole.
Pan Yue patted his shoulder, his eyes full of worry. He knew Chu Feng was under tremendous pressure, but he believed that Chu Feng would be able to overcome the difficulties.
Walking out of the tree hole, Chu Feng squinted his eyes in the glaring sunlight. He looked up at the sky and prayed silently in his heart.
"We will find the truth."
Night Watch Supervisor Li stood nearby, watching Chu Feng and Pan Yue depart with a sneer on his face. "You two immature brats, you think you can uncover the truth? You're really overestimating yourself." He pulled a slip of paper from his pocket, a few scribbled words on it. He glanced at it, then crumpled it up and threw it to the ground.
"Some secrets are better left buried forever..." He muttered to himself, turning and disappearing into the depths of the dense forest. Chu Feng suddenly stopped and looked back in the direction of the tree hole...
Chu Feng paused and turned to look toward the tree hole. His eyes, devoid of fear, shone with determination. The challenge from Night Watch Supervisor Li hadn't frightened him; instead, it had stirred a fighting spirit deep within him. He knew that the dense forest to the west, while dangerous, might also hold more clues to the missing persons' case.
"Dense forest in the west..." Chu Feng repeated these words in a low voice, his mind quickly flashing through all the information he had collected. The list of missing persons, the location of disappearance, the time... These seemingly disorganized information gradually began to piece together into a complete picture under his keen thinking.
"Pan Yue," Chu Feng suddenly said, "Do you remember the records we saw in the archives about the dense forest in the west? There was a large-scale energy fluctuation there, which was said to be related to some unknown creature."
Pan Yue was stunned for a moment, then suddenly realized. "You're saying that this disappearance might also be related to that energy fluctuation?"
Chu Feng nodded. "That's right, and I noticed a detail. The disappearance locations of all the missing persons are concentrated near the area where the energy fluctuations occurred." He took out a map from his pocket and pointed to several red dots marked on it. "Look, these red dots represent the disappearance locations of the missing persons, and they are all concentrated in this area."
Pan Yue carefully examined the map, his eyes filled with admiration. "Chu Feng, you're amazing! You were able to uncover so much crucial information from these subtle clues."
Chu Feng smiled faintly. "I'm just a little more careful than others." He put the map away, a glint in his eyes. "The dense forest to the west may be more complicated than we imagined."
Murong Xue had been following them silently. She noticed that Chu Feng didn't question her about her previous strange behavior as usual, which made her feel a little surprised and a little overwhelmed. She secretly looked at Chu Feng, her eyes filled with complicated emotions.
Chu Feng noticed Murong Xue's gaze, but he ignored it and pretended to be calm as he continued walking forward. He knew Murong Xue had many secrets, but he didn't have time to delve into them. He had to find the missing person first before he could solve all the mysteries.
The three of them walked in silence all the way to the entrance of the dense forest in the west. The dense trees blocked out the sun, and the dark, damp air was filled with an eerie aura.
"Be careful," Chu Feng warned in a low voice, "The atmosphere here is not right."
Pan Yue nodded and tightened his grip on his weapon. He knew that the dense forest to the west was a dangerous place where one could lose their life if they were not careful.
They entered the dense forest cautiously, taking every step with extreme caution. The surrounding trees were so tall that they blocked out most of the sunlight, making the entire forest seem even more eerie and terrifying.
Suddenly, a cold wind blew, and the leaves made a rustling sound, as if someone was whispering.
"What's that sound?" Pan Yue asked nervously.
Chu Feng looked around cautiously, but found nothing unusual. "Maybe it's the wind," he whispered, but his heart was filled with uneasiness.
At this moment, a gray fog suddenly appeared in front of them. The fog rolled and rolled, as if it had life, slowly approaching them.
"It's a phantom of the fog!" Pan Yue exclaimed.
Chu Feng's face darkened. He recognized the mist as the same monster he had encountered in the tree hole before. But he didn't expect that these monsters would appear again, and they looked even more powerful than before.
"Be careful!" Chu Feng shouted, drew his weapon and prepared to fight.
The fog rapidly approached, emitting a chilling roar... "This time, I'm afraid it won't be so easy to deal with..." Chu Feng whispered, a solemn look in his eyes. The gray fog rolled, like a giant beast with its bloody mouth open, ready to devour the three of them. A sharp roar echoed from the depths of the fog, leaving a chilling chill. The fog-like creature encountered in the tree hole reappeared, larger in size, the fog thicker, and exuding a suffocating sense of oppression.
"They have become stronger!" Pan Yue exclaimed, the weapon in his hand trembling slightly.
Chu Feng's eyes were solemn. He knew this battle would be even more difficult than before. The misty illusion didn't give the three of them any chance to breathe. The gray mist spread rapidly, transforming into countless tentacles, sweeping towards them with a biting chill.
"Get out of the way!" Chu Feng shouted, waving his sword with a flash of light, cutting off the incoming mist tentacles. However, these tentacles seemed endless; when he cut off one, new ones would immediately grow out.
Pan Yue also wielded his weapon, engaging the misty creatures. However, he clearly felt the pressure. The tentacles' attack speed and power were much stronger than before, making it difficult for him to resist.
Murong Xue stood a little further away, a faint blue light condensing in her hands. She seemed to be brewing some powerful spell, but she hesitated to make a move.
While Chu Feng was fending off the attacks of the mist creature, he tried to recall the markings he had found in the tree hole. He hadn't fully understood those strange symbols at the time, but now thinking back, they seemed to have some connection to the mist creature's movements.
"Those markings... could they be..." Chu Feng's mind stirred, and a bold idea came to his mind. Risking being hit by the tentacles, he carefully observed the attack trajectory of the misty creature and compared it with the symbols in the markings.
"As expected!" A gleam of light flashed in Chu Feng's eyes. He had finally discovered the weakness of the mist illusion. Those seemingly chaotic attacks actually followed a certain pattern, and this pattern was the information hidden in the mark.
Chu Feng took a deep breath and mobilized his spiritual energy to its full potential. He no longer blindly resisted, but instead seized the opportunity when the mist creature attacked and accurately stabbed the core of the mist creature with his long sword.
"Now!" Chu Feng shouted, and the tip of the sword pierced into the core of the misty illusion, and a powerful energy burst out.
The misty creature let out a shrill scream, and the gray mist quickly dissipated, revealing its original form - a twisted ball of black energy.
The black energy body trembled violently, and eventually turned into starlight and disappeared into the air.
Night Watch Supervisor Li, who had been watching coldly, saw this scene with a flash of surprise in his eyes. He had not expected Chu Feng to be able to find the weakness of the mist creature and defeat it.
"How... did you do that?" Night Watch Supervisor Li asked with a hint of disbelief in his tone.
Chu Feng did not answer, but silently put away his sword, walked to Pan Yue and checked his injuries.
Murong Xue walked to Chu Feng, holding a silk handkerchief in her hand, wanting to help him wipe the sweat from his forehead.
Chu Feng gently avoided Murong Xue's hand.
A trace of disappointment flashed across Murong Xue's eyes, and the silk handkerchief in her hand slowly fell... "Chu Feng..."
The silk handkerchief in Murong Xue's hand slowly fell, just like her current mood, lightly falling to the bottom of the valley. Chu Feng subconsciously avoided it, like a basin of cold water extinguishing the weak flame that had just ignited in her heart. She forced a smile to hide her inner loss, "I'm glad you're okay."
Chu Feng nodded and turned to look at Pan Yue. Although Pan Yue looked a little disheveled, he was not seriously injured. He had simply exhausted his spiritual energy and looked a little pale. "I'm fine, just a little exhausted," Pan Yue said, glancing at Chu Feng with gratitude.
Night Watch Supervisor Li, who had been watching coldly, stepped forward, his tone still harsh, "Dealing with the illusion doesn't mean we've found the missing person. Don't waste time, keep searching." He glanced at Murong Xue with a hint of suspicion and vigilance in his eyes.
Mr. Zhou, a family member of the missing person, also urged anxiously: "Two night watchmen, please find my son! He has been missing for three days..." His voice was choked with sobs and his eyes were red.
Chu Feng took a deep breath and suppressed the irritation in his heart, "Mr. Zhou, please rest assured, we will do our best." He walked into the tree hole again, and Pan Yue followed closely behind.
Inside the tree cave, the air was damp and cold, the air thick with the smell of decay. On the cave wall, strange runes shimmered eerily in the dim light. Chu Feng's eyes swept over the runes, and a strange feeling suddenly arose in his heart. He seemed to have seen these runes somewhere before, but he couldn't place it.
He reached out and touched the cold cave wall, running his fingertips across the uneven runes, trying to find some clues.
"These runes..." Pan Yue also came forward and observed them carefully. "It seems to be an ancient script that I don't recognize."
At this moment, Chu Feng noticed Murong Xue also walked in. She stood quietly aside, her eyes fixed on the runes, a complex light flashing in her eyes.
"Ms. Murong, do you recognize these runes?" Chu Feng suddenly asked.
Murong Xue was slightly startled, a subtle flash of panic in her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. "No, I don't know. I just think these runes look... familiar."
She deliberately avoided Chu Feng's gaze, and her tone was a little stiff. This subtle change did not escape Chu Feng's eyes, and he became even more confused. Murong Xue's reaction was too strange, as if she was deliberately hiding something.
Chu Feng calmly continued to observe the runes on the cave wall. At the same time, he also quietly observed Murong Xue. He noticed that Murong Xue's eyes always unconsciously lingered on certain runes, and her eyes seemed to conceal some emotion he couldn't understand... fear? Or... familiarity?
"The way these runes are arranged..." Murong Xue suddenly muttered to herself, stretched out her finger, and gently stroked one of the runes.
Chu Feng's gaze followed Murong Xue's finger and landed on the rune. It was a strangely shaped rune, like a bird spreading its wings ready to fly, or a sharp blade.
Murong Xue's fingers rested on the rune, motionless. Her eyes became hazy, as if lost in some memory...
"You..." Chu Feng was about to ask, but was suddenly interrupted by Murong Xue.
"Shh..." Murong Xue raised her head, a warning in her eyes, "Don't talk..."
