God Slayer: Make Up for the Past
Chapter 89: The Mist of the Strange Woman's Appearance
"You..." Chu Feng had just begun to speak when Murong Xue stopped playing. The sound of the flute abruptly ceased, and the surrounding fog dissipated a little, revealing her beautiful face. She had a pair of eyes as clear as autumn water, but now with a hint of vigilance, she stared at Chu Feng closely.
"How did you find me?" Murong Xue's voice was like a solitary orchid in a valley, cold and a little distant.
Chu Feng hesitated for a moment and said, "I heard the sound of the flute and followed it here."
Murong Xue frowned slightly, a subtle hint of vigilance flashing in her eyes, "Who are you?"
"I am the night watchman, Chu Feng." Chu Feng replied, showing his ID card.
Murong Xue glanced at the ID card, but the vigilance in her eyes did not diminish in the slightest. "Night Watchman? What are you doing here?"
"Several people have disappeared on the edge of the forest recently, and I'm here to investigate this matter," Chu Feng explained.
Murong Xue chuckled, a hint of sarcasm in her tone, "Missing? The Misty Forest is so big, it's normal for people to go missing. When did the Night Watch start to take care of such things?"
Chu Feng choked at her words. He sensed Murong Xue's hostility towards him, which puzzled him. He took a deep breath, trying to suppress his displeasure. He said, "I suspect these disappearances are related to the anomaly in the Misty Forest."
"Abnormal? What's abnormal?" Murong Xue's eyes became sharper, as if she wanted to see through Chu Feng's thoughts.
Chu Feng was speechless for a moment. He couldn't say that he suspected Murong Xue was related to these disappearances. Although he did have such a suspicion in his heart, he had no evidence at the moment.
"I'm just conducting a routine investigation." Chu Feng finally chose to be vague.
Murong Xue snorted coldly, "Since this is a routine investigation, please go back. Night watchmen are not welcome here."
"But..." Chu Feng wanted to say something, but was interrupted by Murong Xue.
"I advise you to mind your own business. Some things are not within your control." Murong Xue's tone turned cold, with a hint of warning in her eyes.
Chu Feng felt helpless. Murong Xue's attitude made it impossible for him to continue asking questions. He knew that if he continued to pester her, it would probably lead to a conflict, and he was not sure of defeating Murong Xue at the moment.
At this moment, Night Watch Supervisor Li and the family of Zhou's missing person also arrived at the scene. Seeing Chu Feng and Murong Xue confronting each other, Supervisor Li immediately stepped forward and asked in a stern voice, "Chu Feng, what's going on?"
Chu Feng briefly explained the situation. Supervisor Li's expression turned even uglier after hearing it. He glared at Chu Feng fiercely, then turned to Murong Xue and said sternly, "Miss, please cooperate with our investigation."
Murong Xue ignored Supervisor Li and just glanced at Chu Feng coldly. Then she turned and disappeared into the mist, leaving only one sentence echoing in the air: "Remember my words, mind your own business."
Chu Feng stared at the direction Murong Xue had disappeared, his eyes flickering. Murong Xue's warning and the words, "Some things are beyond your control," far from deterring him, only intensified his desire to explore. He sensed a secret hidden within Murong Xue's words, one that was likely connected to the disappearances. He slowly pulled a small piece of cloth stained with black blood from his pocket. It had been found in the home of one of the missing persons, a black blood not found in humans. The pattern on the cloth bore some resemblance to the pattern on Murong Xue's sleeve, though it was more fragmented and blurred, making it difficult to discern.
"Chu Feng! What are you still standing there for!" Supervisor Li rudely interrupted Chu Feng's thoughts, "Hurry up and chase her! If you let her get away, can you bear the responsibility?"
Chu Feng ignored Supervisor Li's roar. Instead, he crouched down and carefully observed the traces on the ground. Where Murong Xue had disappeared, a faint fragrance lingered, the same scent she had emanated from her body. This scent was unique, not an ordinary spice, but rather a scent similar to some herbal odor. Chu Feng's heart stirred; he seemed to have smelled this scent somewhere before...
"Chu Feng!" Supervisor Li saw that Chu Feng was unmoved and became even more furious. "Do you still have my name as your Supervisor in your eyes? I order you to chase him immediately!"
Chu Feng slowly stood up, a barely perceptible smile on his lips, "Supervisor Li, don't worry, I think I already know where to find her." He looked up into the depths of the misty forest, his eyes full of confidence.
Based on his assessment of the scent, he knew Murong Xue hadn't disappeared deep into the forest, but in the opposite direction, to an ancient, almost forgotten altar. The altar had long been abandoned, covered in dense vines and shrubs, making it virtually invisible to the average person. The unique fragrance was emanating from a rare herb growing near the altar.
Chu Feng shared his speculation with Supervisor Li and the family of the missing person, but they were both skeptical. Supervisor Li thought Chu Feng was making excuses to shirk responsibility, while the family of the missing person thought Chu Feng was wasting his time.
"Chu Feng, I warn you, if you can't find the person, I will report it truthfully, do you understand?" Supervisor Li said in a stern tone.
Chu Feng ignored Supervisor Li's threats. He turned and walked towards the ancient altar, with Pan Yue following closely behind him.
When they arrived at the altar, they found Murong Xue standing in the center of the altar, holding the jade flute in her hand, with her back to them.
"You are here indeed." Chu Feng's voice broke the silence of the altar.
Murong Xue slowly turned around, her eyes cold, "How did you find this place?"
"That's not important." Chu Feng approached Murong Xue step by step. "What's important is that I want to know what you are doing here."
A cold light flashed in Murong Xue's eyes. She pulled out a sharp dagger from her waist and pointed it at Chu Feng. "I advise you to leave here, otherwise..."
Chu Feng suddenly burst into laughter, his laughter being particularly abrupt in the silence of the altar. "What else? Kill me? I was just worried about finding a reason to investigate you further, and you've given me a perfect excuse."
Murong Xue was stunned. She obviously did not expect Chu Feng to have such a reaction.
At this moment, a strange roar came from the fog...
The roars grew closer, and within the thick fog, several pairs of scarlet eyes flashed with greed. Rushing out from the fog were a pack of wolf-like monsters with black scales. They let out a chilling growl, baring their sharp fangs as they pounced towards Chu Feng and Murong Xue.
Murong Xue's expression changed, and the jade flute in her hand rang out again. The sound contained a strange power, forming an invisible barrier that knocked away the first few monsters that pounced on her. However, the monsters were too numerous, and the flute's defense was ultimately limited.
"It seems we have to join forces." Chu Feng drew out the long sword behind him, and the sword body shone with a cold light.
Murong Xue didn't say anything, just nodded slightly. The dagger in her hand drew silver light and fought side by side with Chu Feng.
Chu Feng's agility and swordsmanship were fierce, each strike aiming precisely at the monster's vital points. He darted between the monsters like a cheetah, each strike laced with murderous intent. Murong Xue's dagger, though short, was incredibly precise, always delivering the fatal blow at the most crucial moment. The sound of the flute, the flash of the sword, and the shadow of the dagger intertwined to create a thrilling and exciting battle scene.
A monster took advantage of Chu Feng's unpreparedness and pounced on him from the side, its sharp claws about to grab his shoulder. At the critical moment, Murong Xue flew over and stabbed the monster's throat with the dagger in her hand with precision.
"Be careful!" Murong Xue shouted.
Chu Feng came back to his senses, looked at Murong Xue with gratitude, and then continued to fight.
With the tacit cooperation of the two, the monsters were gradually eliminated, and the thick fog gradually dissipated, revealing corpses all over the ground.
After the battle, Murong Xue put away the dagger, walked silently to the altar, looked into the distance, her eyes filled with complex emotions.
Chu Feng walked up to her and said softly, "Thank you."
Murong Xue did not answer, but just shook her head slightly.
"Who are you?" Chu Feng asked with a hint of inquiry in his tone.
Murong Xue turned her head and looked at Chu Feng. A hint of hesitation flashed in her eyes, but she didn't speak in the end.
"Why are you here? What is your connection with the disappearance?" Chu Feng continued to ask.
Murong Xue remained silent, as if she had something to hide.
A gust of wind blew by, bringing with it a faint fragrance. Chu Feng suddenly remembered something. He suddenly raised his head and looked into the depths of the forest.
"Follow me." Chu Feng said this and turned to run towards the depths of the forest.
Murong Xue hesitated for a moment, but finally followed.
Chu Feng followed a vague clue and came to an ancient tree hole. The tree hole exuded a mysterious atmosphere, and the fog around it became thicker, making it difficult to see what was inside.
He stretched out his hand and slowly approached the tree hole... "Wait!" Murong Xue suddenly grabbed Chu Feng's hand.
