God Slayer: Make Up for the Past
Chapter 88 The Beginning of the Misty Forest Journey
The fog surged in like a tide, instantly engulfing Chu Feng. He stretched out his hand, his fingers barely visible in the thick white mist, as if he were in a ethereal, dreamlike world. The trees blurred, twisting into bizarre shadows, like monsters lurking in the shadows, waiting for their prey. The wind wailed, carrying an unknown rustling sound, echoing through the silent forest, a chilling feeling.
"Hmph, with that much skill, you dare to enter the Misty Forest alone? You're simply courting death." Night Watch Overseer Li stood at the edge of the forest, his tone filled with disdain. He crossed his arms, looking on coldly, as if he was certain Chu Feng would return empty-handed.
Chu Feng ignored Li Shouye's taunts. He took a deep breath and tried to remain calm. He knew the Misty Forest was fraught with danger, and a single misstep could lead to ruin. But to uncover the truth behind the disappearances and save those innocent lives, he had to overcome his fear and forge ahead.
"Chu Feng, be careful!" Pan Yue's voice came from behind, with a hint of worry.
Chu Feng glanced back at Pan Yue and nodded slightly, telling him not to worry. Then, he resolutely stepped forward and disappeared into the vast white mist.
"What an ignorant brat." Night Watch Supervisor Li snorted coldly, with a hint of contempt in his eyes.
Outside the forest, the families of the missing waited anxiously, their faces filled with worry and anticipation. A gray-haired elderly woman, a relative of the missing, clutched Chu Feng's coat tightly, as if it were her only hope. "Please, please find my son!" she choked, her voice trembling.
"Don't worry, old man. We'll do our best," Pan Yue consoled him, but he felt helpless. The Misty Forest was incredibly dangerous, even experienced hunters were afraid to venture in. Chu Feng's chances of survival were slim.
Meanwhile, deep in the Misty Forest, a beautiful woman in black quietly watched Chu Feng's every move. She was Murong Xue. Her lips curled up slightly, revealing a mysterious smile. "Interesting little fellow, daring to venture into the Misty Forest alone? You're even braver than I thought."
Chu Feng groped his way through the fog, its thick mist obscuring his vision and disrupting his sense of direction. He could only rely on his intuition, moving forward step by step. "This fog seems a little strange," Chu Feng thought to himself. He felt that this fog was more than just ordinary mist; it seemed to contain some mysterious power that was interfering with his perception.
Just then, he heard faint footsteps coming from not far away. "Who is it?" Chu Feng's heart trembled, and he immediately became alert. He gripped the dagger in his hand and walked cautiously towards the direction of the sound.
"Young man, are you lost?" an old voice sounded.
A hunched figure slowly walked out of the fog. He was wearing coarse linen clothes and holding a wooden stick in his hand. It was the old hunter Chen.
"Old man, why are you in the Misty Forest?" Chu Feng asked.
"Haha, I've lived here for decades and I know the terrain like the back of my hand." Old Hunter Chen smiled and said, "I see you seem lost. Do you need me to take you out?"
Chu Feng hesitated for a moment, then finally shook his head. "Thank you for your kindness, but I still have a mission to complete and must move on."
Old Hunter Chen looked at Chu Feng deeply and said meaningfully: "Young man, the Misty Forest is not a joke, you'd better be careful." After that, he turned and left, and his figure quickly disappeared in the mist.
Chu Feng looked in the direction where Old Hunter Chen had departed, a trace of doubt rising in his heart. "He seems to be hiding something..." Chu Feng muttered to himself, his eyes falling on a piece of muddy cloth on the ground...
Chu Feng squatted down and picked up the dirt-stained cloth. The texture was rough and dark in color, vaguely recognizable as some common linen. He examined it carefully, noting that the edges were jagged, as if torn by some sharp object. "This piece of cloth could very well have been left behind by the missing person," Chu Feng thought to himself.
He continued forward, relying on his keen intuition, searching the fog for clues. Before long, he discovered a few more scattered items: a broken wooden kettle, a few blood-stained copper coins, and a rusty dagger. While these items were unremarkable, they gave Chu Feng a preliminary direction for his investigation. They undoubtedly belonged to the missing persons, and the bloodstains and signs of damage suggested that they might have met with misfortune.
"Chu Feng, what did you find?" Pan Yue's voice came from behind. He had followed Chu Feng all the way. Although he was worried about Chu Feng's decision to go deep into the misty forest alone, he also admired his courage and perseverance.
Chu Feng showed Pan Yue the items in his hand and shared his speculation with him. Pan Yue carefully examined the items, a flicker of surprise in his eyes. "It seems your intuition is quite accurate. These things are indeed very suspicious," he said with a hint of admiration in his tone.
Just then, they ran into Hunter Chen again. "Young men, are you still wandering around in the Misty Forest? Have you found any clues?" Hunter Chen asked with a hint of concern in his tone.
"We found some items left behind by the missing people." Chu Feng said, and showed the items in his hand to the old hunter Chen.
Hunter Chen took a look at the items and his expression changed slightly, but he quickly regained his composure. "I've seen some of these things before, but they're just worthless trinkets," he said, a hint of perfunctoriness in his tone.
"Old man, do you know where the owner of these things went?" Chu Feng asked, staring at the old hunter Chen, trying to find some clues from his expression.
Hunter Chen hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. "The Misty Forest is so vast, who knows where they went? Maybe they got lost, or encountered some wild animal..." His voice gradually faded, as if he was deliberately avoiding Chu Feng's gaze.
Chu Feng's suspicions grew even stronger. He felt that Hunter Chen must know something but was deliberately hiding it. "Old man, do you really not know?" Chu Feng asked again, his tone a little demanding.
Hunter Chen sighed and said, "Young men, I know you're anxious, but the Misty Forest isn't a place you can wander into. You'd better leave quickly, lest..."
Before he could finish his words, a rustling sound suddenly came from the surrounding fog, getting closer and clearer. The sound was like countless tiny claws scraping on the ground, which was creepy.
Old Hunter Chen's face turned pale in an instant, and he shouted in horror: "Oh no! They are coming!" He turned around abruptly and ran into the depths of the fog, and his figure quickly disappeared.
"They? What are they?" Pan Yue asked with a hint of nervousness in his tone.
Chu Feng didn't answer. He gripped the dagger tightly in his hand and looked at the surrounding fog with vigilance. He felt a dangerous aura approaching...
"Be careful!" Chu Feng suddenly shouted.
The words have not yet finished...
Before he could finish his words, a group of creatures resembling spiders but with bat-like wings scurried out from the mist. Their bodies were pitch black, gleaming with a metallic sheen, and their eight slender legs gleamed like sharp blades, gleaming with a cold light. They emitted a sharp, piercing hiss that sent shivers down their spines.
Chu Feng reacted quickly, pushing Pan Yue behind him. At the same time, the dagger in his hand flashed a silver light and accurately stabbed a creature that was rushing towards him. Black blood splattered out, carrying a pungent fishy smell.
"What the hell are these things?" Pan Yue exclaimed, drew the dagger at his waist and joined the battle.
These creatures were incredibly fast, fiercely aggressive, and numerous. Chu Feng and Pan Yue stood back to back, desperately fending off their attacks. Chu Feng, with his agility, maneuvered through the tight space. The dagger in his hand was like the tongue of a venomous snake, each strike precise and deadly.
He noticed that these creatures were afraid of fire, so an idea struck him. He pulled a tinder from his backpack and lit a dead branch. Waving the burning branch, he drove back several approaching monsters. The light of the flames dispelled the surrounding fog, allowing Chu Feng to see his surroundings.
He found that they were in a low-lying area surrounded by dense undergrowth, which hid many sharp stones and broken branches.
A bold idea emerged in Chu Feng's mind. He deliberately exposed a flaw to lure a few creatures closer, then suddenly jumped back and hid in the bushes.
The creatures lost their target and rushed madly into the bushes, where sharp rocks and broken branches became traps for them, their sharp legs got stuck and they let out shrill cries.
Chu Feng took the opportunity to rush out from the bushes, and the dagger in his hand flashed like lightning, killing the trapped creatures one by one.
Pan Yue also quickly understood Chu Feng's intention and used the surrounding environment to deal with these strange creatures.
The battle lasted for a while, the surrounding fog gradually dissipated, the creatures gradually decreased, and finally disappeared without a trace.
Chu Feng and Pan Yue were both exhausted and out of breath, their bodies covered in black blood.
At this moment, Chu Feng felt someone's gaze fixed on him. He suddenly raised his head and looked into the depths of the fog.
A figure loomed in the mist, and his face was unclear, but Chu Feng was certain that it was Murong Xue. There was a hint of curiosity in her eyes, and this subtle look made Chu Feng feel a little uneasy.
He subconsciously wanted to chase after him, but was stopped by Pan Yue.
"Chu Feng, stop chasing. The Misty Forest is too dangerous. Let's leave here first." Pan Yue persuaded.
Chu Feng hesitated for a moment, but ultimately gave up the idea of chasing after him. He was filled with doubts. What had Old Hunter Chen been hiding? What was Murong Xue's motive? These questions, like a fog, enveloped his mind.
At this moment, a melodious flute sound came from the depths of the fog. The sound was crisp and pleasant, but also had a hint of mystery.
Chu Feng's heart stirred, and he walked in the direction of the sound... his steps became faster and faster, and finally, he saw Murong Xue. She was standing under a large tree, the fog surrounding her seemed to surround her, and the sound of the flute came from her hand.
"You..." Chu Feng just opened his mouth...
