God Slayer: Make Up for the Past
Chapter 24 Library Mist
As Chu Feng's fingers touched the edge of the book, Lin Xuesheng's body trembled violently, as if struck by lightning. He let out a low roar, and a flash of red light flashed in his eyes. The red light was fleeting, so fast that it almost looked like an illusion. But Chu Feng saw it clearly, and his heart became even more certain that Lin Xuesheng was being controlled by some evil force.
"Let him go!" A sharp voice pierced the stagnant air in the library. Teacher Su walked over quickly, pulled Lin behind him, and stared at Chu Feng and Pan Yue warily. "Who are you? Why are you harassing my students?"
Chu Feng frowned slightly and explained, "Teacher Su, we just want to help him. He's been behaving strangely lately..."
"Abnormal? What's abnormal?" Teacher Su said firmly, a hint of unconcealed panic in his voice. "Isn't he just a little engrossed in his reading? You'll scare him by making such a fuss! What if it leaves a psychological scar on him? Can you bear the responsibility?"
Teacher Su's reaction made Chu Feng even more confused. Shouldn't an ordinary teacher, faced with such a situation, prioritize the safety of her students? Why was she so opposed to them approaching Lin? Could she have had something to do with this, too?
Pan Yue tugged at Chu Feng's sleeve, signaling him not to act rashly. He whispered, "Let's see first. There's definitely something wrong here."
Chu Feng nodded, suppressing his doubts and uneasiness as he continued to observe Student Lin. Student Lin hid behind Teacher Su, his body trembling slightly, his eyes hollow and lifeless, his mouth still mumbling incoherently. The evil aura around him flickered in and out, as if shrouded by a thin veil, appearing hazy and eerie.
"Why aren't you leaving yet?" Teacher Su's voice rang out again, a hint of impatience in her tone. "This is the library, keep quiet! Your noise will disturb other students' studies!"
Chu Feng ignored Teacher Su, his eyes fixed on the book in Lin's hand. He knew the key to the problem lay in this book. He had to find a way to get it to solve the mystery surrounding Lin.
Just then, a steady voice came from the door: "What's going on?"
Everyone looked in the direction of the voice and saw Principal Guo standing at the door, looking at them with a gloomy face. His eyes fell on Chu Feng and Pan Yue with a hint of obvious disgust.
"You again?" Principal Guo said in a cold tone, "I warned you last time not to cause trouble in school! What are you doing here now?"
Chu Feng took a deep breath and was about to explain when he was interrupted by Principal Guo.
"I don't want to hear your explanation!" Principal Guo waved his hand impatiently. "Leave school immediately! Otherwise, I will call the police!"
Chu Feng clenched his fists and looked at Principal Guo with a determined look. He knew that if he left now, Student Lin would be in real danger. He couldn't give up; he had to get to the bottom of the matter.
"Principal Guo," Chu Feng said calmly and firmly, "I know you're worried about the school's reputation, but this matter concerns the safety of our students. We can't just sit back and do nothing..."
Principal Guo's expression changed, and he angrily said, "You..."
He was about to speak when he was interrupted by Chu Feng.
"This book..." Chu Feng's eyes fell on the book again, and his tone was low and firm, "I must see it."
Chu Feng looked directly at Principal Guo, his eyes unflinching. "Principal Guo, I know you're worried about the school's reputation, but this matter concerns the safety of the students. We can't just sit back and do nothing. Student Lin is clearly not in good condition. We must find out why before we can help him."
Principal Guo's expression darkened even further. Suppressing his anger, he said, "Nonsense! Student Lin is just feeling unwell. I've already contacted his parents, and they'll be picking him up soon. What are you doing here causing trouble? Leave immediately, or I'll call security!"
"Principal Guo, do you really believe that Student Lin is just feeling unwell?" Chu Feng pointed at the book tightly clenched in Student Lin's hand. "Look at him, his eyes are vacant and he's mumbling something. Does this look like a normal physical discomfort? Furthermore, I noticed that he's been holding this book with him since yesterday, never leaving it. I think the key to the problem lies in this book."
Principal Guo followed Chu Feng's finger and looked at the book in Lin's hand, his brows furrowed slightly. The book looked ordinary, nothing special. He said impatiently, "It's just a book, what's the problem? Don't make a fuss about it!"
"No, Principal Guo, there's definitely something wrong with this book." Chu Feng said firmly, "I've noticed that every time Student Lin flips through this book, his condition becomes more abnormal. Also, the air around him seems a little... different."
Xiao Baoan, standing nearby, had been observing the situation silently. Although he had some doubts about Chu Feng and Pan Yue's identities, he also felt that Lin Xuesheng's behavior was indeed strange. After hearing Chu Feng's words, he carefully observed the book in Lin Xuesheng's hand and the environment around him.
Suddenly, Xiao Baoan noticed that the book in Lin's hand seemed to be emitting a faint black mist. The mist was so faint that it was almost invisible to the naked eye, but Xiao Baoan could clearly feel its presence. He looked at Chu Feng, his eyes full of surprise and confusion.
"Principal Guo, Chu Feng is right. There is indeed something wrong with this book." Xiao Baoan said in a deep voice, "I sense a strange aura emanating from it."
Principal Guo was stunned. He hadn't expected even Xiao Baoan to say that. He looked at Student Lin, then at the book, and began to waver.
"This...how is this possible?" Principal Guo muttered to himself.
Chu Feng took the opportunity to step forward and said, "Principal Guo, please let us check this book. Perhaps we can find the reason why Student Lin is abnormal."
Principal Guo hesitated for a moment, but finally nodded. He knew that if he continued to stop Chu Feng and Pan Yue, it would only cause more trouble. Moreover, Xiao Baoan's words forced him to take this issue seriously.
Chu Feng carefully took the book from Lin Xuesheng's hand. The cover was plain, without any pictures or words. However, the moment Chu Feng's fingers touched the pages, he felt a cold breath coming from the book, which made him shudder.
"Pan Yue, look..." Chu Feng handed the book to Pan Yue, his eyes full of solemnity.
Pan Yue took the book and flipped through it carefully. Suddenly, his face changed, and a flash of shock flashed in his eyes. He pointed to a line of small words on the page and whispered, "This...this is..."
Pan Yue pointed to a small, inconspicuous line of characters on the page and said in a barely audible voice, "This... This is the seal of an evil spirit!" His face was pale, his expression solemn. The characters weren't printed, but rather composed of a dark red substance, like dried blood, emitting a faint, unsettling aura.
Chu Feng leaned in for a closer look and saw the twisted symbols that looked like some ancient writing, yet filled with ominous meaning. He felt a chill rising from the soles of his feet and rushing straight to his head.
"What does this curse seal... do?" Chu Feng asked in a low voice, unconsciously tightening his grip on the hilt of his sword. Although he was only an apprentice night watchman, he had already received some basic training and knew the existence of evil spirits and their dangers.
"This is a controlling curse," Pan Yue explained, his brow furrowed. "It will gradually erode the spirit of the one cast, eventually turning them into a puppet of the evil spirit." He paused, his expression growing even uglier. "Furthermore, the complexity of this curse far exceeds my imagination. The caster is definitely no ordinary person."
Pan Yue attempted to break the curse with some of the purification spells he had learned, a faint white light flickering from his fingertips. However, the moment his power touched the seal, the dark red symbol seemed to come alive, flickering violently and emitting an even thicker black mist, which quickly devoured Pan Yue's purifying power.
Student Lin's body began to tremble violently, and he groaned in pain. His originally distracted eyes became even emptier, as if he had lost the last bit of his sanity.
Pan Yue's expression changed, and he quickly withdrew his hand, beads of sweat oozing from his forehead. "Oh no! The evil spirit has sensed our intentions. It's becoming increasingly hidden, and its control over Student Lin is tightening!"
Chu Feng's heart sank. He felt a powerful sense of oppression, as if a pair of invisible eyes were watching them, hidden in the darkness, waiting for an opportunity to strike. The air in the library became even more oppressive, as if it had solidified, making it difficult to breathe.
Teacher Su was so frightened that her face turned pale. She clutched Principal Guo's arm tightly and trembled. "Principal, what...what is going on? What should we do?"
Although Principal Guo was also filled with fear, he tried to remain calm and said calmly, "Don't be afraid, Teacher Su, we will handle this matter." However, his voice was obviously trembling and lacked confidence.
Xiao Baoan tightly gripped his baton and looked around vigilantly, his eyes filled with anxiety. Although he didn't understand what was happening, he could sense a dangerous aura approaching.
Chu Feng took a deep breath and tried to stay calm. He knew that now was not the time to panic. He had to find a way to find the hidden evil spirit and save Student Lin. He looked at Pan Yue, his eyes full of determination. "Pan Yue, what should we do?"
Pan Yue pondered for a moment, a gleam of light in his eyes. "Although the evil spirit has improved its concealment, it can't completely erase its traces. We can use the special abilities of the Night Watchmen to track its presence..." As he spoke, he pulled out an exquisite silver compass from his pocket. The needle began to spin wildly, eventually pointing in one direction - the basement of the library. Pan Yue's face changed, and he whispered, "There..." He suddenly raised his head and looked at Chu Feng, his eyes filled with solemnity. "In the basement..."
