God Slayer: Make Up for the Past

Chapter 23: First time on campus

Dust flew, rubble tumbled, and Chu Feng and Pan Yue fled the tomb's passage in panic, still shaken. The image of the mysterious Wu and his final roar still echoed in their minds.

"Senior Wu..." Chu Feng murmured to himself, his eyes full of worry and self-blame.

Pan Yue patted his shoulder and said in a deep voice, "Now is not the time to be sad. We must first complete Senior Wu's instructions."

The two supported each other as they descended the rugged mountain path. According to the clues left by the mysterious Wu, their destination was Yuncheng No. 1 Middle School. It was said that some strange events had occurred there recently, requiring the Night Watch to investigate.

Yuncheng No. 1 Middle School, nestled on the edge of the city, was surrounded by lush greenery and a tranquil environment. However, the moment Chu Feng and Pan Yue stepped onto the campus, they sensed a strange presence. An imperceptible chill hung in the air, as if something was lurking in the shadows, watching them.

The two exchanged glances, each seeing a hint of wariness in the other's eyes. They slowly walked along the campus path, carefully observing their surroundings. The teaching buildings, the playground, the library... everything seemed ordinary, yet tinged with an inexplicable eeriness.

"Something...doesn't feel right here." Pan Yue whispered, subconsciously tightening the dagger in his hand.

Chu Feng nodded. He also felt an inexplicable sense of oppression. This feeling was like being stared at by an invisible eye, which made people shudder.

They decided to first go to the school's director to find out what was going on. After a few twists and turns, they finally found the principal's office. Principal Guo was a short, fat, middle-aged man with thinning hair. He wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses and looked very refined.

"Who are you?" Principal Guo looked at the two young men in ordinary clothes in front of him with a somewhat impatient tone.

"We are the night watchmen, and we have been ordered to investigate the strange things that have happened in the school recently." Chu Feng said straight to the point.

"Night watchman?" Principal Guo pushed his glasses up, a hint of suspicion flashing in his eyes. "Any proof?"

Chu Feng and Pan Yue showed their Night Watch badges. Principal Guo took a closer look, his expression only growing darker.

"The school has been peaceful recently. How could anything strange happen? Did you make a mistake?" Principal Guo said in a firm tone, obviously not believing what they said.

"Principal Guo, we have received reliable information that the school..." Chu Feng tried to explain, but was rudely interrupted by Principal Guo.

"I don't care what news you've got. Everything is normal at school! Stop spreading rumors and disrupting the school order!" Principal Guo's tone was filled with warning. "If I see you messing around in school again, don't blame me for being rude!"

At this moment, the office door was pushed open, and a middle-aged woman in plain clothes walked in. She was Teacher Su from the school and Principal Guo's right-hand man.

"Principal, what's going on?" Teacher Su saw Chu Feng and Pan Yue and showed an unhappy expression on his face. "Who are these two people?"

Principal Guo snorted coldly and said, "You're here to investigate something strange, claiming to be a night watchman. This is sheer nonsense!"

Teacher Su walked over to Principal Guo and whispered, "I think they're just here to cause trouble. Ignore them..." Her voice trailed off, and her eyes fell on an object in Chu Feng's hand... Teacher Su's eyes were fixed on the broken jade pendant in Chu Feng's hand, and her face turned pale in an instant. She recognized that jade pendant...

"This...this jade pendant..." Teacher Su pointed at the jade pendant in Chu Feng's hand, his voice trembling, "Where did you get it from?"

Chu Feng subconsciously gripped the jade pendant tightly. It had been brought from the tomb and seemed to belong to the mysterious Wu. "It's related to our investigation," he replied briefly, observing Teacher Su's reaction sharply. Her excessive fear made him realize that the jade pendant might hold a secret.

Teacher Su took a deep breath and tried to calm herself. "Nonsense! This jade pendant... this jade pendant is not important at all! Stop making trouble here!" She forced herself to remain calm, but her tone only grew sharper, as if she was desperate to cover up something.

Principal Guo, who was standing by, noticed something strange about Teacher Su and asked in confusion, "Old Su, do you recognize this jade pendant?"

Teacher Su immediately denied it, "No, I don't know them! I just think they're making trouble here and disrupting the normal teaching order of the school!" She turned to Principal Guo and said, "Principal, I think we should quickly ask the security to kick them out!"

"That's right!" Principal Guo nodded in agreement. When he looked at Chu Feng and Pan Yue again, his eyes were filled with disgust. "You two, leave the school immediately! Otherwise, I will call the police!"

Chu Feng wanted to explain, but was interrupted by Teacher Su's sharp voice, "What explanation do you need? You two liars! You dare to pretend to be a night watchman with a broken jade pendant you picked up from who knows where? Get out of here!"

Seeing the principal and the teacher's resolute attitude, Pan Yue tugged at Chu Feng's sleeve and whispered, "Chu Feng, let's go first. It seems we can't get anything out of here for the time being."

Chu Feng was a little unwilling to give up, but he knew that it would be useless to continue pestering. Just as they were about to leave, a middle-aged man in a security uniform walked in. He was the school's security captain, Xiao Baoan.

Xiao Baoan was a man of integrity, well-respected by the students. Seeing the tense atmosphere in the office, he asked, "Principal, what happened?"

Principal Guo was about to speak when Teacher Su spoke first, "Captain Xiao, these two young men are pretending to be night watchmen and making trouble here. Get them out now!"

Xiao Baoan looked at Chu Feng and Pan Yue with a hint of inquiry in his eyes. "Are you two really the Night Watchmen?"

Chu Feng and Pan Yue showed their badges again. Xiao Baoan examined them carefully, paused for a moment, and said, "Principal, Teacher Su, some strange things have indeed happened in the school recently..."

"Captain Xiao!" Teacher Su interrupted him sharply, "Don't listen to their nonsense! Everything is normal at school!"

Xiao the security guard ignored Teacher Su and continued, "A few nights ago, while I was on patrol, I heard strange noises coming from the library. It sounded like... someone was crying. I went to check, but found nothing. Also, recently, students have been reporting seeing shadows in the school at night..."

Teacher Su wanted to refute, but was stopped by Principal Guo. Although Principal Guo did not believe Chu Feng and the others, he was also a little uneasy about what Xiao Baoan said. He frowned and said nothing.

Xiao Baoan turned to Chu Feng and Pan Yue and said sincerely, "You two, if you are really the Night Watchmen, I hope you can help us find the truth about these strange things happening in the school."

Chu Feng felt a sense of relief. Finally, someone believed in them. He nodded and said firmly, "We will do our best."

He turned to look at Principal Guo and Teacher Su, with a hint of warning in his eyes: "As for you, it's best not to stop us."

After saying this, he clenched the jade pendant tightly in his hand. At this moment, the office door was pushed open again, and a breathless student ran in...

"Principal! Something bad has happened! The library... the library..."

The student was terrified. He pointed in the direction of the library and said intermittently: "Library... Student Lin... He... He seems to have gone crazy!"

"Student Lin?" Principal Guo frowned. "What's going on? Explain clearly!"

The student tried to catch his breath and said, "Student Lin... he was in the library, mumbling to himself and... talking to the air, as if... as if he was talking to something! And... his eyes were terrifying, like... like he had become a completely different person!"

Chu Feng's heart trembled. The student's description was very similar to the characteristics of the evil spirit incident he had investigated before! "Take us to the library!" He said in a hurried tone, leaving no room for doubt.

Teacher Su immediately objected, "No! We can't go to the library now! What if... what if something unexpected happens?" She grabbed Principal Guo's arm tightly, her eyes full of fear.

Principal Guo was also a little hesitant, worried that the matter would become a big deal and affect the school's reputation. "This..."

"Principal!" Chu Feng said in a more serious tone, "If this is truly an evil spirit, delaying it will only make things more dangerous! We must go to the library immediately!"

Xiao Baoan also agreed with Chu Feng's statement, "Principal, I think Mr. Chu is right. We can't delay any longer!"

Principal Guo finally compromised, "Okay, let's go to the library! Captain Xiao, bring a few people with you!"

Chu Feng and Pan Yue ignored Teacher Su who was still chattering and followed the students to run quickly towards the library.

The library was completely silent, with only the faint scent of ink emanating from the books on the shelves. The student, Lin, was sitting at a table in the corner, a book in hand, muttering to himself.

Chu Feng walked lightly and slowly approached Lin Xuesheng. Lin Xuesheng didn't seem to notice their arrival and was still immersed in his own world.

"What is he talking about?" Pan Yue asked in a low voice.

Chu Feng listened carefully and found that what Lin Xuesheng was muttering was intermittent and unclear, like an ancient spell, or like he was talking to someone.

"Who are you talking to?" Chu Feng asked tentatively.

Student Lin didn't answer, but continued to mutter. His eyes were empty, his face was pale, his lips trembled slightly, and a faint evil aura emanated from him.

Chu Feng noticed that the book in Lin's hand was an ancient thread-bound book with yellowed pages covered with strange symbols.

"This book..." Chu Feng stretched out his hand to take the book, but was suddenly dodged by Student Lin.

Student Lin raised his head, a strange light flashed in his eyes, and he stared at Chu Feng intently.

"Don't touch my book!" Student Lin's voice was hoarse, as if squeezed out from the depths of his throat.

Chu Feng felt a chill rising from the soles of his feet. The evil aura surrounding Student Lin was getting stronger and stronger, but he always felt that this evil aura seemed to be deliberately hidden by something, appearing to be elusive.

Chu Feng and Pan Yue exchanged glances, and Pan Yue nodded slightly, signaling Chu Feng to be careful.

Chu Feng took a deep breath and tried to approach Lin Xuesheng again. "Lin Xuesheng, calm down. We want to help you!"

Student Lin suddenly laughed, and his laughter was so sharp and piercing that it made people's hair stand on end.

"Help me? What can you do for me? You know nothing!" Student Lin stood up suddenly and hugged the book tightly in his arms. "This is mine! No one can take it away!"

He turned around and tried to escape, but was caught by Chu Feng.

"Let me go!" Student Lin struggled, his eyes filled with fear and despair.

"Student Lin!" Chu Feng grabbed his arm tightly. "What happened to you? Who made you become like this?"

Student Lin stopped struggling, his eyes gradually became dull, and he began to mutter those strange spells again... His voice became lower and lower, and finally turned into a silent whisper, like a raving.

Chu Feng's eyes fell on the book in his hand. He knew that this book must be related to Student Lin's abnormal behavior.

He slowly reached out his hand, wanting to take the book again...
