Legend of Mir 2: Seeking the Truth in Marfa
Chapter 9 The Old Man
Brook killed monsters along the way. After more than an hour, he had already reached the halfway point of level 1 experience.
At this point, the skill level of the Mental Power Combat Technique has finally reached level 1, increasing accuracy by 3 points. The current experience level is 0/2000, and it will take until level 13 to cultivate the second level. The total accuracy attribute has reached 2 points. Although the attack on the monster is not 14% accurate, it can at least hit 10 out of 9, greatly improving efficiency.
Brook's sin value gradually faded, the red name faded into a yellow name, and the yellow name returned to its original white.
A forest appeared ahead. Brooke heard the distant howling of wolves. It seemed they were now in the easternmost part of Mengzhong Province. If they continued northward along the edge of the woods, they would see the city of Shabak.
Brook originally planned to change his route and head north, but after passing the edge of the woods and killing a wolf, he discovered that wolves were very suitable for upgrading.
The wolf's attack range is 6-8, dealing only 4 points of damage to Brook on average, and its accuracy is a low 10. It takes Brook only 6 seconds to kill a wolf, and the wolf only knocks away 16 points of Brook's health, which can be fully restored with a single healing spell. The wolf's experience gain of 35 points isn't low, making it both safe and efficient.
Brook was delighted to see the prey. Since he already knew the location of Shabak City and his backpack still had enough medicine, he was in no hurry to go to Shabak. So he slowly walked deeper into the woods and began his wolf-killing mission.
Quickly reaching level 11, Brook donned the light armor he'd just gotten from killing the armored beetle. It had 3-3 defense and 1-2 magic resistance, average stats, but it was a significant improvement over his current cloth armor, which had 0-2 defense. He also donned a bronze helmet, with 0-1 defense.
After replacing my equipment, my total defense is now 3-8. I guess the wolves are barely biting anymore, and my wolf-killing efficiency will increase again. The only downside is that after killing dozens of wolves, not a single one drops: gold, medicine, or equipment.
Brook thought for a moment, then realized that this wolf was not a monster, but a native creature of the Marfa continent, just like chickens and sika deer, so it did not drop equipment.
Well, in that case, let's let these wolves go. There are plenty of monsters out there.
So Brook retreated from the forest and returned to the Gobi Desert, continuing to kill sandworms and armored beetles, and continued to move north along the edge of the forest.
Brook slew monsters while making his way slowly. After more than four hours of trekking, he finally saw a city in the distance. Brook was now level 4 and had learned the Poisoning Technique. While he had acquired dozens of pieces of equipment from his monster slayings, his potions were running low. The two ebony swords he'd prepared had their durability reduced to zero, and he feared they would shatter if he used them again, so he had to keep them in his bag. He was now using the iron sword that the monster had dropped, with an attack power of 14-2, which wasn't bad at all.
After fighting for half a day, Brook felt a little tired, so he headed towards Shabak and prepared to go into the city to rest.
Suddenly, a continuous "da-da-da" sound came from nearby. It was the sound of wings fluttering. Polyhedral insects had made similar sounds before, but the frequency was not so rapid. Brook stopped and looked in the direction of the sound. It turned out to be a giant polyhedral insect.
This monster, mentioned in Situ Haoyun's illustrated guide, has a health of 250 and an attack of 7-15, making it the most powerful monster in the Mengzhong Gobi Desert. Brook's health is currently at 82, so he should be able to kill him.
Besides it, there were several smaller monsters nearby. Brooke used poison from a distance to lure the giant polyhedron towards him. He first dyed it red, increasing the monster's damage. Then, with another poison, he dyed it green, causing it to continuously lose health, preventing it from slowly recovering. The giant polyhedron, attacked by the poison, moved towards Brooke like a small tank.
It was drawn out. Now Brook was 1v1 with it. He slashed with his iron sword, knocking off 10 HP from the giant polyhedral worm. The giant polyhedral worm's long, spiked mouth suddenly thrust out like a spring, knocking off 20 HP from Brook. Brook was startled. How could this worm deal over 7 HP when it only had 15-20 HP? It seemed the giant polyhedral worm had some special ability that increased its damage. Brook quickly cast a healing spell, then stabbed the giant polyhedral worm with his sword.
After seven or eight rounds of trading blows, Brook, unable to withstand the pressure, quickly ran away, using his healing spells to recover. The giant polychaete wasn't moving fast enough to catch up, and it was also poisoned, unable to recover, much to its dismay. Brook recovered to full health and continued to fight the giant polychaete, only to run away again when his health was low. After nearly two minutes of back-and-forth, the giant polychaete finally died, its belly flipping over and exploding onto the ground.
Brook hurried forward to pick it up. A few low-level potions, plus 5 sun waters, can instantly restore 30 health points and 40 magic points. This kind of instant recovery potion is quite precious and should be saved for use at critical moments. I heard from Uncle Fu that sun water can only be occasionally exploded from monsters, and the pharmacists of the Marfa continent cannot configure it. A large bracelet with defense 1-2, a half-moon weapon that can be used by Taoist priests at level 15 (attack 5-10, Taoism 1-1), and the rest are some ordinary jewelry, as well as 3 low-level skill books, namely the basic swordsmanship of the warrior, the healing technique of the Taoist priest, and the small fireball of the mage, which are completely useless to Brook.
Currently, only the large bracelet is usable, so I replaced it with an iron bracelet with a 2-attack-1 accuracy rating, bringing my defense up to 4-10, making it a bit stronger. While the newly added large bracelet reduces my accuracy by 2 points, my Psychic Combat Technique already has 2 levels, and the skill adds another 2 points, so my total accuracy remains at 14, allowing me to hit almost every time I attack. My weapon, the Half Moon, is still one level away from being usable.
Brook continued on his way to Shabak, intending to find an inn to rest. While monks possessed far greater stamina than mortals, and meditating for a while was considered rest, even without sleeping, Brook wasn't used to it yet and found lying in bed more comfortable.
Upon entering Shabak City, Brook noticed the ground was paved with neatly arranged large stone bricks, and the city walls were truly magnificent. Brook had been through nothing but the Gobi Desert, but even near the city, he saw no one, feeling a sense of desolation. Shabak City was vast, and Brook ran along the walls for a full minute before reaching the main gate.
Brook stopped near the main gate of Shabak, because there was a large bulletin board to the west of the main gate, and an old man was standing next to the bulletin board.
Brook was delighted to finally see a figure. He slowly walked over and saw that it was an old man, not a monk, but just an ordinary civilian from the Marfa Continent.
"Old man, it's so late, why don't you go home?" Brooke asked.
"Hello, young man. I just want to warn everyone passing by not to go to the Zuma Temple, especially the deep part of the temple, which is very dangerous." said the old man.
There must be a reason for this old man to be standing here. Perhaps it can trigger some quest. Brook then said, "Old man, what is your name?"
"I lost my wife and my son. I am just a lonely old man. My name is not important. But please remember, don't go to the Zuma Temple, especially the deep part of the temple. It is very dangerous there." The old man repeated.
"Old man, my name is Brooke, I am a monk from Mafa, and I come from Ginkgo Village in Biqi Province." Brooke said.
"Oh, so you are Monk Mafa. My son is also a monk... My name is Qingcheng." said the old man.
"Hello, Senior Qingcheng, can you tell me what exactly happened?" Brook asked patiently.
"I used to live in Mengzhong Province and had a happy family. My wife and I had a smart son. Many years ago, the Zuma Cult Leader led monsters to invade Mengzhong, and I lost my wife. But I am just an ordinary mortal, with no way to seek revenge on the monsters. I could only raise my son alone, and strive to train him to be a Marfa monk. My son lived up to everyone's expectations. He practiced hard and became a leader among his peers. He hoped that one day he could kill the Zuma Cult Leader and avenge his mother."
The old man paused for a moment, then continued, "When my son was 20 years old, he and several companions went to the Zuma Temple to carry out a mission. During the mission, he left the team alone and went deep into Zuma. Who would have thought that before he could even meet the Zuma leader, he was unfortunately surrounded by monsters and collapsed on the 7th floor of Zuma, without even having time to use his scroll to return to the city. By the time his companions found him, it was too late, and they only brought back his body."
"So I can only stand here every day and warn everyone who passes by not to go to the Zuma Temple. The monsters there are too powerful. Don't be like me and let your parents lose their loved ones." The old man finished speaking. This is a sad story.
"Old man, if one day I become strong enough, what can I do for you?" Brook asked.
"If you can defeat the Zuma leader, please bring back its head and I will give you a generous reward. But now, young man, please don't go to the Zuma Temple. You are not strong enough." The old man finally expressed his wish and his mission.
"Senior Qingcheng, if I can defeat Zuma leader one day, I will definitely bring back its head." Brook is currently unable to fulfill the old man's wish and cannot complete this task.
The old man still insisted on standing next to the bulletin board, waiting for the next passerby to warn people of the dangers of the Zuma Temple.
Brooke left silently. Perhaps only by obtaining the head of the one who killed Zuma could the old man feel a little relieved.
If I had unfortunately fallen under the claws of the monster like the old man's son, Uncle Fu would definitely be so sad.
No, I won't be like the old man's son.
I will be more cautious, I will be more rational, I will work harder, and I will be stronger.
