Hidden truth, intricate love

Chapter 16 The Shadow of Truth

Zhang Xiaofei and Su Wanqing were in a safe house at the police station, nervously sorting through the evidence they had gathered. The clock on the wall ticked, and every second seemed to stretch indefinitely.

Inside the safe house, the lighting was soft and steady, providing a quiet environment for Zhang Xiaofei and Su Wanqing to focus on the task at hand. The room was equipped with the most advanced technology, from computers to data storage devices, each carefully selected to ensure the security of information.

Zhang Xiaofei opened a computer connected to several external storage devices and began syncing and backing up all the digital evidence they had collected, carefully checking each file to ensure it had not been tampered with or damaged.

"We need to encrypt these files," Zhang Xiaofei told Su Wanqing, a hint of seriousness in her voice. "That way, even if someone tries to steal the information, they can't easily decipher it."

Su Wanqing nodded in understanding. She was sorting through a series of paper documents and photos, which were key physical evidence. She used a high-definition scanner to convert these documents into digital format for better preservation and analysis.

"Every document must be backed up," said Su Wanqing, who saved the scanned documents on different storage media. "We can't risk losing any evidence."

During the compilation process, they also used professional forensic software to analyze video and audio files, looking for details that might have been overlooked. Zhang Xiaofei put on headphones and listened attentively to a key recording, looking for any clues that might reveal the motives and behavior of the group behind the scenes.

“There’s some unusual background noise here,” Zhang Xiaofei said, pointing to the audio waveform on the screen. “It might be a clue to another location.”

Su Wanqing moved closer, and the two of them analyzed the audio data together, trying to decipher the hidden information behind it.

In addition to digital and physical evidence, they also recorded all witness statements and eyewitness testimonies. Zhang Xiaofei was responsible for recording and organizing these confessions, ensuring that every testimony was recorded accurately.

"Witness testimony is crucial," Zhang Xiaofei said. "It provides direct evidentiary support for the case."

Su Wanqing nodded in agreement. She was comparing the testimony with the existing evidence, looking for consistency and potential contradictions.

As time passed, the two worked tirelessly in the safe house, piecing together scattered pieces of information into a complete picture. They knew that this evidence would be the key to uncovering the truth and a powerful weapon against the Gu Group.

After ensuring all evidence was properly collected and protected, Zhang Xiaofei and Su Wanqing began to formulate their next plan. They needed to find the right time and method to make the evidence public and ensure justice was served.

"We have to be careful," Zhang Xiaofei said to Su Wanqing as she checked the video on the memory card. "If this evidence were to come to light, it would cause a huge stir."

Su Wanqing nodded, her eyes flashing with determination: "I know, but we can't let those innocent people continue to suffer."

Just as the two were concentrating on compiling the evidence, Zhang Xiaofei's phone suddenly vibrated. It was a call from an unknown number. She hesitated for a moment, but eventually answered it.

"Officer Zhang, you've done a good job, but the game has just begun." A cold and familiar voice came from the other end of the phone. It was Li Ming.

Zhang Xiaofei frowned: "Li Ming, what on earth do you want to do?"

A chuckle came from the other end of the phone. "What do I want to do? I just want to make the game more interesting. Do you think you'll win just by getting the evidence? That's naive."

Su Wanqing looked at Zhang Xiaofei nervously. She could feel the threat emanating from the person on the other end of the phone.

"You'd better be careful, Officer Zhang, Miss Su. You think you are very smart, but what you don't know is that the power of the Gu Group is far greater than you imagine." Li Ming's words were full of sarcasm.

The call was suddenly disconnected. Zhang Xiaofei and Su Wanqing exchanged glances, both filled with unease. They knew that Li Ming's words were not groundless, and that the power of the Gu Group was indeed unfathomable.

Su Wanqing sat in the dim room, her heart filled with confusion and pain. She had just learned that Li Ming had a close connection with the group behind the scenes, but he was not the real mastermind. This discovery made her feel even more complicated.

Zhang Xiaofei knocked on the door and walked in. Seeing the confusion on Su Wanqing's face, she sat down next to her and said softly, "Wanqing, I know this news is hard to accept, but we have to face reality. Li Ming may have been used."

Su Wanqing raised her head, tears glistening in her eyes. "Xiaofei, I don't understand why Li Ming would be involved with them? He has always been such an upright person."

Zhang Xiaofei sighed. She knew the deep friendship between Su Wanqing and Li Ming. "Sometimes, people get dragged into complicated situations without realizing it. Perhaps Li Ming was forced into this, too."

Su Wanqing took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down: "I need to know the truth, no matter how cruel it is. Li Ming is my good friend, and I can't let him be misunderstood like this."

Zhang Xiaofei nodded, her eyes revealing determination. "We will find the truth together. Now, we need to collect more evidence to understand the true relationship between Li Ming and that group."

Over the next few days, Su Wanqing and Zhang Xiaofei began a more in-depth investigation. They found that Li Ming was indeed connected to the group, but his role was more like a middleman, forced to pass information and perform some tasks for the group.

Su Wanqing got a chance to meet Li Ming by chance. In a quiet cafe, the two sat face to face, and the atmosphere seemed a little heavy.

"Li Ming," Su Wanqing's voice trembled slightly. "Tell me, what is the relationship between you and that group?"

Li Ming was silent for a moment, then slowly spoke: "Wanqing, I did have contact with them, but I swear, I never thought of hurting anyone. I...I just have no choice."

Su Wanqing held Li Ming's hand tightly. She could feel his helplessness and fear. "I understand, Li Ming. But you must stand up now and tell us everything you know. Only in this way can we reveal the truth and ensure that those who are truly behind this receive the punishment they deserve."

Li Ming stood in front of Su Wanqing, the rain running down his cheeks, blurring his vision. His voice was low, with a hint of despair: "Wanqing, I...I did something that can't be undone."

Su Wanqing's heart was filled with doubts and worries. She held Li Ming's hand tightly, trying to give him strength: "Li Ming, tell me, what happened? We can face it together."

Li Ming took a deep breath, a trace of painful memories flashing in his eyes: "It's my sister, Xiaoya. She...she was arrested."

Li Ming stood by the window of the cafe, his eyes piercing the drizzle as he gazed into the distance. His memories came flooding back like a tide, carrying with them bitterness and helplessness.

Ever since leaving the orphanage, Li Ming has been searching for his long-lost sister, Xiaoya. They had been each other's only support in the orphanage until fate cruelly separated them. For years, Li Ming never gave up searching, until one day, he finally found her.

The moment they met, Li Ming felt an unprecedented warmth and hope. He wanted to make up for the lost time and give Xiaoya all the love and protection she had never given him. However, fate seemed to play a trick on him. Before the joy of their reunion had faded, Xiaoya was ruthlessly captured by the group behind the scenes.

Li Ming's heart sank to the bottom. He knew that all this was because of his involvement with that group. They used him, threatened him, and made him their pawn without realizing it.

On the day Li Ming was carrying out his investigation, he received a call. The voice on the other end of the phone was cold and cruel: "Your sister is in our hands. If you want to see her alive, do as we say."

At that moment, Li Ming's world completely collapsed. He felt an unprecedented fear and despair. He couldn't imagine that his only relative, his sister, whom he had just reunited with, was in danger.

Su Wanqing looked at the pain on Li Ming's face, and her heart ached as well. She knew how Li Ming felt at the moment and what he had endured.

Su Wanqing knew what Li Ming's sister meant to him. Xiaoya was Li Ming's only relative and the one he had relied on since he was a child.

"They threatened me that if I didn't do as they asked, Xiaoya would..." Li Ming's voice choked and he couldn't continue.

Su Wanqing's heart ached. She finally understood Li Ming's helplessness and pain. She hugged Li Ming tightly, trying to comfort him: "We will definitely find a way to rescue Xiaoya."

A glimmer of hope flashed in Li Ming's eyes, but he soon fell into despair again: "Their power is too great, how can we possibly defeat them?"

Su Wanqing looked at him firmly: "Because we have justice on our side, because we have each other. Li Ming, we grew up together, I know you, and I know you are not a bad person."

A warm feeling welled up in Li Ming's heart. He knew Su Wanqing was right. He couldn't let Xiaoya's sacrifice be in vain, nor could he let his conscience be condemned.

"Okay, I'll go with you." Li Ming finally made up his mind. "Let's work together to expose their crimes and rescue Xiaoya."
