Years turn into wind

Chapter 79 Warmth in the Mist

After days of fighting and undercurrents, Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei finally found some peace. Inside the Marshal's Mansion, the bright candlelight cast a shadow on their figures, creating a warm and peaceful atmosphere.

As the night deepened, Ling Xiaotian pulled Cheng Yuwei to his side and whispered, "Yuwei, you've been busy these past few days. I've already asked the people in the mansion to arrange everything. Why don't we put these trivial matters aside and go out for a walk?"

Cheng Yuwei was slightly stunned, then smiled and said, "Xiaotian, you actually thought of taking me out for a walk." She said jokingly, but her heart was warmed by his thoughtfulness.

The two changed into casual clothes and sneaked out of the Marshal's Mansion, avoiding the bustling streets and coming to a small lake in the city. The night breeze blew gently, and the lake rippled, reflecting the starlight, a quiet and beautiful scene.

Cheng Yuwei sat on a stone bench by the lake, gazing at the shimmering surface, and sighed softly, "Ever since I came here, it feels like every day has been spent amidst the flashing of swords and sabers. A quiet moment like today is a rare luxury."

Ling Xiaotian sat down beside her, gazing at her profile, his heart subtly moved. He reached out and gently held her hand, whispering, "Yuwei, in these troubled times, many things are beyond our control, but I promise you, if given the chance, I will give you a peaceful and stable life."

Cheng Yuwei turned her head, a glimmer in her eyes, and said softly: "Xiaotian, in fact, I have never regretted walking side by side with you all this time. I am willing to go hand in hand with you, no matter the wind and rain or turmoil."

Ling Xiaotian stared at her, slowly approached her, and asked in a low voice: "Then, will you always stay by my side and never leave me?"

Cheng Yuwei's heart trembled slightly, and she nodded gently with a firm look in her eyes: "Yes, I will."

Ling Xiaotian's eyes flickered with tenderness as he slowly embraced her in his arms, a warm aura enveloping them both. The starlight by the lake reflected on their embrace, casting a dreamy glow over this moment of tenderness.

Their moment of peace was broken when a subtle sound suddenly emanated from the shadows by the lake. Ling Xiaotian looked up alertly, quickly protecting Cheng Yuwei and whispering, "Someone's following us."

Before he could finish his words, several dark figures silently approached, their hands flashing with cold light. Ling Xiaotian snorted coldly, quickly drawing the dagger from his waist and protecting Cheng Yuwei. The two sides instantly exchanged blows, and the lakeside was suddenly filled with the sound of swords clashing.

Although Cheng Yuwei was nervous, she remained calm. She quickly found rocks nearby and threw them at the enemy, attempting to distract them. Ling Xiaotian quickly dispatched several of them during the battle. Seeing the situation was dire, the remaining men in black quickly withdrew, disappearing into the night.

After the battle, Cheng Yuwei stepped forward and checked Ling Xiaotian's injuries with concern, her eyes full of distress: "Xiaotian, you are injured!"

Ling Xiaotian shook his head and chuckled, "This little injury is nothing." He reached out and gently stroked her face, whispering soothingly, "Yuwei, I'm glad you're okay."

Cheng Yuwei was moved and held his hand. She said softly, "Xiaotian, they dared to attack so boldly. It must not be a simple assassination. We must find out who is behind this."

Ling Xiaotian nodded, his brows furrowed slightly, a hint of coldness in his eyes: "Yes, they seem to have made detailed arrangements. It seems we need to intensify our investigation further."

The next morning, Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei returned to the mansion and immediately began arranging their investigation. Ling Xiaotian dispatched his men to plant spies throughout the city, while Cheng Yuwei was responsible for analyzing the clues left by the assassin the previous night, attempting to deduce the intentions of the person behind the incident.

At this moment, Liu Jingyao suddenly appeared at the Marshal's Mansion. With a concerned expression, she asked Ling Xiaotian, "Xiaotian, I heard someone attacked you last night. Are you injured?"

Ling Xiaotian's eyes flashed with a hint of coldness, and he responded lightly: "It's okay, it's just a small matter."

Liu Jingyao's words were full of concern, but they were actually testing her. She glanced at Cheng Yuwei, a hint of jealousy and hostility. Cheng Yuwei stood calmly beside Ling Xiaotian, her gaze cold and composed, neither humble nor overbearing, unaffected by her presence.

Ling Xiaotian said impatiently: "Jingyao, thank you for your concern. I have already made all the arrangements, don't worry."

Seeing that he was unwilling to talk more, Liu Jingyao could only snort coldly and left with dissatisfaction. After she left, Cheng Yuwei gently pulled Ling Xiaotian and whispered, "Xiaotian, Liu Jingyao's behavior is suspicious. She may know something."

Ling Xiaotian pondered for a moment, then nodded and said, "I'll have someone keep a close eye on her to see what she's planning."

A few days later, spies from the palace reported that a group of unidentified itinerant merchants had suddenly appeared in the city, suspected to be connected to the underworld. Cheng Yuwei astutely analyzed that these people were most likely hidden spies, so she and Ling Xiaotian devised a detailed plan to lure them out.

That night, a fake banquet was arranged in the palace to lure the merchants to gather intelligence. Just when the assassins thought they had succeeded, the soldiers who had been ambushed rushed in and captured everyone in one fell swoop.

After the battle, Ling Xiaotian and Cheng Yuwei stood on a high ground, watching the captured spies being taken away, feeling quite relieved. Ling Xiaotian held her hand and said softly, "Yuwei, we won this game."
