Years turn into wind

Chapter 14 The Dawn Before the Storm

When word of approaching enemy reinforcements reached the camp, a tense atmosphere gripped the entire camp. Soldiers quickly assembled, the neighing of warhorses echoing in the air, thick with the scent of gunpowder and gunpowder. Ling Xiaotian stood high above, gazing at the approaching enemy troops in the distance, his expression as calm as ever. Cheng Yuwei stood behind him, speculating on the impending battle.

"Wei'er, this battle is much more difficult than before," Ling Xiaotian whispered, his tone filled with deep solemnity. He looked up at the sky, where dark clouds seemed to foreshadow an impending storm.

Cheng Yuwei nodded. Although she was nervous, she was ready to face anything. "I won't back down again, and I won't leave you. As long as you are on the battlefield, I will stay by your side."

Ling Xiaotian tilted his head slightly and looked at her deeply, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes. He had never thought that someone would be willing to risk their life to follow him, let alone Cheng Yuwei, who had once been at odds with him.

"You must be careful." His voice was low, but with a hint of helplessness and concern. He knew Cheng Yuwei's determination and understood her bravery, but war was ruthless, and he didn't want her to be hurt because of him.

Cheng Yuwei smiled and nodded, her eyes full of determination. "I will protect myself and help you win this battle."

During the tense moments of battle preparation, Ling Xiaotian's deputy general hurried over and handed over a report. "General, the enemy reinforcements arrived faster than expected, but their formation seems somewhat disorganized, and there appear to be signs of internal disarray."

Ling Xiaotian frowned, quickly scanned the intelligence, and calmly made a judgment: "This is an opportunity. The enemy's command is unstable. We can exploit this weakness and launch a surprise attack."

The deputy general nodded and immediately began to arrange the army's movement. Ling Xiaotian turned to look at Cheng Yuwei, his eyes flashing with complex emotions. He knew that this battle would determine their life and death and their future.

"Wei'er, you cannot participate in this battle." Ling Xiaotian's voice was more serious than ever, his tone carrying an unquestionable command. "The situation this time is more dangerous than before. The enemy's main force has already assembled. Any negligence will put us in dire straits."

Cheng Yuwei looked at Ling Xiaotian, a flicker of hesitation in her eyes. She knew Ling Xiaotian's concerns were genuine; the battlefield was fraught with unknown dangers, especially since she wasn't an expert in combat. But she still shook her head and said firmly, "I don't want to be someone who only hides in the background. No matter how dangerous it is, I'm willing to face it with you."

Ling Xiaotian's heart moved slightly, but his face remained expressionless. He was well aware of Cheng Yuwei's stubbornness, and he also knew that her determination to fight alongside him was deeply ingrained in her heart.

"Then stay by my side and don't leave." Ling Xiaotian finally compromised, his voice low but full of concern.

Cheng Yuwei nodded. She understood that this was the biggest concession Ling Xiaotian could make.

The battle soon began. Enemy reinforcements poured in like a flood, and the battlefield was instantly drowned in the sound of artillery and gunfire. Ling Xiaotian rode atop his warhorse, his command saber raised high, its sharp edge gleaming in the sunlight. His voice boomed as he commanded his soldiers to charge again and again.

Cheng Yuwei stood on the high ground in the rear, witnessing the entire battlefield unfold. Her heart was in her throat. Although she couldn't personally participate in the battle, she clearly saw how Ling Xiaotian calmly commanded the troops and how he repeatedly pushed the enemy into desperate situations.

As the battle progressed, the chaos within the enemy ranks became increasingly apparent. Ling Xiaotian decisively seized the opportunity and commanded his troops to launch a fierce attack on the enemy's core positions. Each attack was incredibly precise, and the enemy was steadily retreating.

"Very good, keep pushing forward!" Ling Xiaotian's voice was calm and firm, his eyes always fixed on the enemy's movements, as if he could foresee their every move.

Just when he thought the battle was stabilizing, he suddenly heard the sound of hurried horse hooves in the distance. A sentry rushed over, his face pale and his voice urgent, "Marshal, this is bad! The enemy has another elite force, and they're encircling us from the rear!"

Ling Xiaotian's face darkened as he immediately realized that the enemy's reinforcements were more than what they appeared to be. The enemy commander had apparently retained a fresh force, intending to launch a fatal attack from the rear.

"Retreat from the defense line, everyone prepare for a counterattack!" Ling Xiaotian gave orders quickly, his eyes filled with the fire of battle, but there was also a hint of uneasiness in his heart.

The battle situation suddenly became critical. Cheng Yuwei, standing on the high ground, saw the enemy troops attacking from behind, and her heart suddenly tensed. She looked at Ling Xiaotian's back and couldn't help but rush to his side: "Their intention is to trap you here!"

Ling Xiaotian glanced back at her, a complex emotion flashing in his eyes, but he said nothing. He knew Cheng Yuwei was right. The enemy's goal was to completely encircle him and cut off his escape route.

"Don't worry, I won't let them succeed easily." Ling Xiaotian's tone was still calm, but Cheng Yuwei read a kind of resolute determination in his eyes.

The atmosphere on the battlefield grew increasingly tense. The enemy's elite troops were rapidly approaching. As the two sides' lines drew closer, Cheng Yuwei's heartbeat grew faster and faster. She knew that the upcoming battle would determine their life or death, and the pressure on Ling Xiaotian was greater than ever before.

Suddenly, an idea flashed through Cheng Yuwei's mind. She grabbed Ling Xiaotian's hand and said urgently, "I have an idea! I can use chemical means to create a smoke bomb to interfere with the enemy's vision and buy us time to retreat."

Ling Xiaotian was stunned for a moment, then he understood Cheng Yuwei's intention. He looked at her, a hint of admiration in his eyes, but his tone remained cautious: "Are you sure you can complete it in such a short time?"

Cheng Yuwei nodded firmly: "I can, I have all the materials, it just takes a little time."

Ling Xiaotian was silent for a moment, then decisively ordered: "Buy her some time! Everyone, cover Miss Cheng!"

Cheng Yuwei didn't hesitate any longer and immediately threw herself into her work. Her hands quickly mixed various chemical reagents, with only one thought in her mind - it must be completed as soon as possible!

On the battlefield, Ling Xiaotian's soldiers, under his command, held their positions with all their might, while the enemy's elite troops drew ever closer. Cheng Yuwei's forehead was covered with sweat, but her movements remained steady, without a trace of panic. Finally, with the addition of the last drop of reagent, a thick puff of white smoke quickly rose.

"Success!" Cheng Yuwei shouted, and then threw the smoke bomb in her hand towards the enemy.

In an instant, the entire battlefield was enveloped in thick white smoke, severely disrupting the enemy's vision and disrupting their attack. Ling Xiaotian seized this opportunity and quickly ordered his troops to evacuate the battlefield and move to a designated safe zone.

By the time they finally evacuated the battlefield, it was completely dark. Ling Xiaotian, Cheng Yuwei, and his troops successfully retreated, temporarily escaping the enemy's pursuit. Cheng Yuwei stood beside Ling Xiaotian, breathing a sigh of relief, a smile of relief on her face.

"Thank you, Wei'er." Ling Xiaotian's voice was low and tender. He knew that without Cheng Yuwei's help, the outcome of the battle might have been completely different. Cheng Yuwei not only used her wisdom to resolve the crisis, but also used her courage to stand by him in his most dangerous moment.

Cheng Yuwei looked up at Ling Xiaotian, her eyes still etched with tension and fatigue, but more so with an indescribable sense of satisfaction. She had never imagined that in such an era, on such a brutal battlefield, she would be able to immerse herself so deeply in it, and face life and death together with this man.

"I don't want you to go through this alone," she said softly, with a hint of tenderness in her tone, "This is our common battle."

Ling Xiaotian's lips curled up slightly, his eyes filled with a tenderness and gratitude she had never seen before. He knew that in this life-or-death battle, Cheng Yuwei was no longer just an insignificant outsider; she had become an indispensable presence in his life.

"You know what, Cheng Yuwei?" Ling Xiaotian's voice was low and gentle, "If it weren't for you, I would have been in dire straits long ago. You not only saved my army, but you also saved me."

A wave of warmth surged through Cheng Yuwei's heart. She knew how rare this recognition was for the usually cold and aloof Ling Xiaotian. She wanted to say something, but found herself unable to speak for a moment. She could only smile and nod gently, indicating that she understood.

However, in this brief moment of peace, a sentry hurried over and interrupted their conversation. "Marshal! Latest intelligence! The enemy has begun to regroup, and their reinforcements have arrived. I'm afraid they'll launch a new attack tomorrow morning!"

Ling Xiaotian's expression darkened instantly, his gentle demeanor replaced by the ruthlessness of battle. He pondered for a moment, then made a quick decision: "We must launch a surprise attack before the enemy troops have finished reorganizing themselves and disrupt their plans!"

Cheng Yuwei stood beside him. Although she was a little worried, she knew the rules of the battlefield well. Any moment of delay could bring fatal consequences.

Ling Xiaotian turned to look at her, his eyes filled with reluctance and determination. "This battle will be more dangerous than before. You must ensure your safety."

Cheng Yuwei nodded. Although she felt a little uneasy about the situation, she was no longer the person who was afraid of fighting. She said firmly, "I will be careful, but I will continue to help you."

Ling Xiaotian was silent for a moment, then nodded. He knew Cheng Yuwei was determined, and like him, she wouldn't back down easily.

As night fell, Ling Xiaotian quickly deployed his plan for a night assault. The soldiers quietly assembled outside the camp, preparing to launch a blinding attack in the darkness. Cheng Yuwei remained with the group, distributing simple protective gear she had made to the soldiers at the last moment, aiming to minimize casualties.

"I've tried my best to make their equipment safer, but war is still inevitable," Cheng Yuwei whispered, standing beside Ling Xiaotian. She understood that no matter what she could do, the nature of war was still cruel.

Ling Xiaotian didn't say anything, just looked at her deeply, then turned his gaze to the enemy position in the darkness ahead.

The night raid was as swift and ferocious as expected. Ling Xiaotian personally led his elite troops directly into the heart of the enemy. Under the cover of Cheng Yuwei's chemical smoke bombs, they successfully disrupted the enemy's defenses. The enemy was caught off guard, their command system was in disarray, and the soldiers fled in all directions.

Ling Xiaotian's decision was decisive and calm, and his troops penetrated the enemy's formation like lightning, completely disrupting their deployment. The enemy's elite troops, who were supposed to be the main force, suffered heavy losses in this sudden attack.

However, fighting was not without cost. From her observation post in the rear, Cheng Yuwei witnessed countless soldiers fall, feeling an overwhelming sense of heaviness wash over her. The cruelty of war was beyond her comprehension as a scientist. Every death was an irreversible loss of life, and all she could do was to do her best to minimize further casualties.

Just as Ling Xiaotian successfully repelled the enemy and was about to lead his troops to retreat, a stray bullet suddenly streaked through the night sky and shot straight at him. Ling Xiaotian sensed the danger, but the distance was too close for him to dodge!

"Xiaotian! Be careful!" Cheng Yuwei's voice cut through the darkness, carrying heart-wrenching fear.

In an instant, Ling Xiaotian felt a powerful impact knocking him to the ground. What came to his ears was Cheng Yuwei's voice... and her figure rushing towards him to block the bullet.

Ling Xiaotian's eyes suddenly narrowed, and time seemed to freeze at this moment. His hands trembled as he hugged Cheng Yuwei, who was lying in his arms, and his voice was hoarse and low: "Cheng Yuwei!"

Can Cheng Yuwei survive this fatal injury? How will Ling Xiaotian face this sudden crisis? Behind the bloody battlefield, what will be their fate?
