Years turn into wind

Chapter 13 Heartbeat on the Battlefield

Ling Xiaotian strode toward the battlefield, his determined figure disappearing outside the tent. Cheng Yuwei watched him retreat, feeling a sudden surge of inexplicable loss and worry. She leaned back against the bed, her heartbeat quickening.

This war had exhausted her physically and mentally, but what confused her even more was that every time Ling Xiaotian left, she felt unbearable anxiety. She knew the source of this emotion, but she never dared to face it.

After an unknown amount of time, the adjutant tiptoed into the tent, handed her a glass of water, and said in a low, concerned voice, "Miss Cheng, you need to rest more. The next battle will not be easy."

Cheng Yuwei took the water cup and smiled faintly: "I know. But I am more worried about Ling Xiaotian. He has to face those enemy troops alone now..."

The adjutant was slightly taken aback, then said softly, "The Marshal is always fearless on the battlefield. His strategic vision and military strength are impeccable. You don't have to worry too much."

Cheng Yuwei nodded, but her heart still trembled. She had never felt such a deep concern for someone as she did now. Although Ling Xiaotian was a warlord, domineering and ruthless, his trust in her and his dedication to the battle had gradually melted the ice of self-protection in her heart.

A light breeze blew through the cracks in the tent, and Cheng Yuwei shuddered. She gazed at the distant sky, as if imagining the battlefield Ling Xiaotian was currently standing on. Emotions surged uncontrollably through her heart.

She recalled the moment she first traveled to this era, when the cold and ruthless warlord Marshal had been her sworn enemy. But as time went on, she discovered he wasn't as cold and ruthless as he appeared, but rather possessed a heart of resilience and tenderness. Especially when she decided to risk sabotaging the enemy's supply lines, Ling Xiaotian's concern and care repeatedly wavered in her judgment of him.

Thinking of this, Cheng Yuwei's heartbeat quickened. She suddenly realized that this wasn't just a wartime collaboration, but also her growing dependence on Ling Xiaotian. Her mind told her not to let her emotions cloud her judgment, but every time he left, her heart tightened uncontrollably.

"Why did it turn out like this?" Cheng Yuwei murmured to herself, the water cup in her hand trembling slightly.

Seeing her complicated expression, the adjutant seemed to be hesitant to speak. In the end, he just sighed, quietly left, and left her alone in deep thought.

On the battlefield, Ling Xiaotian galloped at full speed, his command sword flashing with a cold gleam. His brow furrowed as he pondered the enemy's next move. He had just received word that the enemy's main force was gathering in the valley, preparing for a final assault. This battle would determine victory or defeat, and the pressure weighed heavily on his shoulders.

Despite this, his thoughts kept drifting to Cheng Yuwei. Her intelligence, her bravery, even her stubbornness, all captivated him. The scene where she risked her life to infiltrate the enemy camp and sabotage the supply line still haunted him.

Ling Xiaotian was always calm and decisive on the battlefield, rarely swayed by personal emotions. But Cheng Yuwei was different. She didn't belong to this world, yet she was deeply rooted in his life in a unique way. He even began to wonder if, after the war ended, they would still be able to fight side by side like they did now.

Thinking of this, he couldn't help but smile, but quickly restrained his expression. He knew that the battlefield was ruthless and now was not the time to indulge in emotions.

Ling Xiaotian pulled on the reins, halting his horse on the hillside. He scanned the enemy positions in the valley with a sharp gaze, quickly forming a battle plan in his mind. He whispered to his lieutenant, "Encircle the enemy from the southwest. There's a gap in their firepower distribution; we must capture it as soon as possible."

The deputy general took the order and left, but Ling Xiaotian still stayed where he was, looking at the flames of war burning in the distance, and a sense of uneasiness gradually rose in his heart.

Cheng Yuwei, resting in the tent, suddenly felt a surge of panic. She didn't know where Ling Xiaotian was, but the anxiety for his safety was unbearable. She struggled to sit up. Although her body was still recovering, she was determined not to just stand by and watch.

Cheng Yuwei put on her coat and walked straight out of the tent. The air outside the tent was cold and the soldiers were nervously preparing for battle. When they saw her coming out, they all saluted her.

"Ms. Cheng, you shouldn't come out. Your injury hasn't healed yet." A soldier said worriedly.

Cheng Yuwei shook her head and said firmly, "I must know Ling Xiaotian's current situation."

The soldier hesitated for a moment, then pointed to the distance and said, "The Marshal has gone to the front line in the valley to command. The battle is still going on."

Hearing this, Cheng Yuwei's heartbeat quickened again. She stood there, gazing at the flames of war blazing in the distance, as if sensing the danger Ling Xiaotian was in. At this moment, she could no longer remain here doing nothing.

"Prepare the horses, I'm going to the front line." She made the decision suddenly, her tone full of unquestionable firmness.

The soldiers looked at each other, hesitated for a moment, and finally brought a horse as she instructed.

Cheng Yuwei mounted her horse, gripping the reins tightly with both hands. Though still weak, she had already made her decision. She couldn't wait any longer. Whether it was the outcome of the battle or her feelings for Ling Xiaotian, she couldn't stay out of it.

With the sound of horse hooves, Cheng Yuwei galloped towards the battlefield.

When Cheng Yuwei arrived at the battlefield, she was shocked by the scene before her. The battlefield was in chaos, and the fighting between the two sides was extremely fierce. Soldiers fought bloody battles, and the sounds of gunfire and shouts of killing could be heard one after another.

Her gaze quickly swept across the battlefield, finally catching sight of Ling Xiaotian on a distant slope. He stood at the forefront on horseback, commanding his troops to charge. His figure remained resolute and towering, but Cheng Yuwei had never been more aware than now that he was at the center of a dangerous vortex.

Cheng Yuwei's heart sank. She spurred her horse forward, with only one thought in mind—to find Ling Xiaotian and make sure he was safe.

Her appearance immediately attracted the attention of the soldiers. A deputy general rushed to her anxiously and tried to stop her: "Miss Cheng, it's too dangerous here, you can't come over!"

But Cheng Yuwei's eyes were as firm as iron, and she said without hesitation: "I want to see Ling Xiaotian."

The deputy general looked at her, his face full of embarrassment, but he was helpless. He knew how important Cheng Yuwei was to the commander-in-chief, so he could only sigh and let her go.

Cheng Yuwei rode her horse straight towards Ling Xiaotian. When she finally came to his side, Ling Xiaotian turned around suddenly. The moment he saw her, the expression on his face changed from cold to shocked.

"Wei'er! Why are you here?" Ling Xiaotian's voice was full of surprise and worry. He couldn't believe that Cheng Yuwei would appear in front of him in this life-and-death battle.

Cheng Yuwei looked at him, her eyes slightly red, but she tried hard to suppress her inner emotions, and her voice was firm: "I can't watch you take risks alone."

Ling Xiaotian was silent for a moment, an indescribable emotion welling up in his heart. He had never imagined that one day someone would be willing to take risks for him, and that this person was none other than the chemistry doctor he had once despised and even been hostile to.

"You shouldn't have come," he said softly, his tone hinting at blame, but more at concern.

Cheng Yuwei looked at him and shook her head slightly, but a determined light shone in her eyes: "I don't regret coming here, Ling Xiaotian. You have already sacrificed too much for this war. I can't bear to sit back and do nothing."

Ling Xiaotian's throat moved slightly. He knew Cheng Yuwei's stubbornness and determination. At this moment, there was no trace of retreat in her eyes, as if her courage was equal to his on the battlefield.

"Do you know how dangerous it is?" Ling Xiaotian finally spoke, his voice low and with a hint of heartache that was hard to conceal.

Cheng Yuwei looked at him fearlessly: "I know, but precisely because it's dangerous, I can't let you bear it alone. I am willing to fight alongside you, even in the face of death."

Ling Xiaotian's heart suddenly trembled. He had never imagined someone would speak to him like this. Her courage and deep affection were like a sharp sword, cutting through the defenses in his heart. He was used to shouldering everything alone, but Cheng Yuwei before him made him realize for the first time that some things didn't need to be borne alone.

He looked at her, his usually cold eyes now filled with complex emotions. "Cheng Yuwei, why did you do this?" His voice trembled slightly, as if he was asking her, but also asking himself.

Cheng Yuwei bit her lip, took a deep breath, and finally said what she had been hiding in her heart: "Because I care about you. Ling Xiaotian, from the beginning I only wanted to help you win, but now, I find that I am not just fighting for the war. I am fighting for you."

Her confession left Ling Xiaotian speechless. A complex web of emotions surged within him. Reason told him he shouldn't discuss his feelings at this moment; on the battlefield, with life and death hanging in the balance, any emotion was a luxury. However, Cheng Yuwei's confession made it impossible for him to ignore the wavering feelings within him.

"You..." Ling Xiaotian opened his mouth, but found that he couldn't organize his words.

Cheng Yuwei's eyes remained firm: "I don't know where this relationship will lead us, nor do I know what the outcome of the war will be, but I know that no matter what the road ahead is, I am willing to accompany you and face it with you."

Ling Xiaotian felt his chest fill with warmth, a feeling he had never experienced before, like his frozen heart finally thawing. He had never allowed himself to rely on anyone, but Cheng Yuwei's appearance made him realize that sometimes, having someone willing to fight alongside him was a blessing he couldn't refuse.

He looked at Cheng Yuwei, was silent for a moment, and finally reached out and gently held her hand, with a hint of tenderness in his eyes: "Cheng Yuwei, are you really not afraid?"

Cheng Yuwei felt the warmth of his palm, and her heart throbbed, but she still smiled and shook her head: "I'm afraid, but I'm more afraid of losing you."

Ling Xiaotian's heart suddenly sank. Cheng Yuwei before him seemed to be radiant, and he couldn't look away. He had never imagined that behind the cruelty and bloodshed of war, there could be such a sincere love.

Just as the atmosphere between the two men became tense, suddenly, a cannon shot was heard in the distance, shaking the entire battlefield. Ling Xiaotian's face instantly returned to a stern state. He knew that the battle had entered its most critical moment.

"The battle isn't over yet." Ling Xiaotian released her hand, his tone becoming calm and firm again, but the tenderness in his eyes remained. "I can't let the enemy win."

Cheng Yuwei nodded, knowing full well that she couldn't waste any more time at this moment. "I understand. I will do my best to help you."

Ling Xiaotian gave her a deep look, then turned back to commanding the battlefield. His voice once again became calm and decisive: "Everyone, prepare to attack!"

Cheng Yuwei stood behind him, watching him give orders, and an indescribable emotion rose in her heart. He was still the cold and ruthless battlefield commander, but in her eyes, he was no longer just a warlord fighting for victory, but also someone she was willing to protect with her life.

The battle raged for an entire day. The enemy's offensive surged like a tide, only to be repelled wave after wave as if blocked by a seawall. Ling Xiaotian's strategy had proven effective; the enemy's main force was outflanked and ultimately routed. While the soldiers cheered their victory, Ling Xiaotian remained at the highest point of the battlefield, calmly watching the remaining enemy forces retreat.

"We won." Cheng Yuwei walked to Ling Xiaotian and said softly, with joy and relief in her eyes.

Ling Xiaotian nodded slightly without much expression on his face, but Cheng Yuwei knew that the stone in his heart had finally fallen.

The two stood together, watching the sunset in the distance gradually sink into the horizon, as if all the noise had calmed down with the end of this battle.

"Cheng Yuwei." Ling Xiaotian suddenly called her name in a low voice, with a hint of strange emotion in his voice.

Cheng Yuwei looked up at him, her heartbeat slightly accelerated: "What's wrong?"

Ling Xiaotian looked at her, silent for a moment, and finally spoke slowly: "This battle is won, but the war is not over. And there are still many things between us that have not yet been clarified."

Cheng Yuwei was stunned for a moment, then smiled and nodded: "I know. But no matter what, I will continue to stay by your side."

Ling Xiaotian's lips curled up slightly, with a hint of tenderness in his eyes: "After this war, I hope to have more time to talk to you about what happened between us."

Cheng Yuwei's face flushed, and a sweet feeling welled up in her heart. She knew that Ling Xiaotian's defenses were gradually opening up for her, and she had finally found her true love.
