The ancient war between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in a wealthy family
Chapter 23 The Long and Dangerous Road and the Worry of Life
A strong wind blew from behind me, and I instinctively dodged to the side, and Hu San's hand missed. Before I could breathe a sigh of relief, I saw a dark shadow flash past me, and then Hu San let out a scream and fell to the ground, holding his stomach.
"Go!" Shadow growled, grabbed my hand and ran away.
He dragged me along, and I stumbled out of Zuixianlou. Behind me came a cacophony of shouting. Hu San's men reacted and began to chase us.
"This way!" The shadow pulled me into an alley. After turning several times, I could no longer tell the direction.
My heartbeat was pounding like a drum, my lungs felt like they were on fire, and I could barely breathe. The clatter of my high heels on the bluestone pavement was particularly piercing in the quiet alley, like the sound of a death drum.
"They are catching up!" I shouted in horror. Looking back, I saw several dark shadows approaching us quickly.
Shadow's face darkened and he pulled me to quicken my pace.
We ran into a dead end.
"It's over..." I closed my eyes in despair, and Zhan Yu's face flashed through my mind.
"Don't be afraid." The shadow protected me behind him, pulled out a dagger from his waist, and stared at the entrance of the alley with sharp eyes.
Hu San, holding his stomach, walked in aggressively with a few of his men, with a ferocious smile on his face.
"Girl, run, I wonder where you can go!" Hu San said viciously, blood dripping from his fingers onto the ground like a bunch of enchanting red flowers.
He slowly approached us, holding a shiny dagger in his hand. Blood was dripping from the tip of the blade, and it was flashing a chilling light in the dim light.
I grabbed the corner of Shadow's clothes tightly, and my body couldn't stop shaking.
Shadow gripped the dagger tightly, his eyes firm and without the slightest fear.
"Who are you? Why are you chasing me?" I asked calmly, trying to delay time.
Hu San sneered: "Don't ask questions that you shouldn't ask. Just follow us obediently and you'll suffer less."
"Dream on!" Shadow shouted angrily and rushed forward waving a dagger.
In the narrow alley, swords flashed and slashed. I was so frightened that I closed my eyes, not daring to look. All I could hear was the sound of metal clashing and the muffled groans of shadows.
I suddenly opened my eyes and saw that Shadow was injured, but he still stood in front of me, trying his best to protect me.
Hu San's men were increasing in number, and Shadow gradually became exhausted, with several more wounds on his body.
Hu San approached with a sinister grin, raised the dagger, and pointed it at my heart...
"Don't touch her!" A cold voice sounded at the entrance of the alley.
Hu San's movements came to an abrupt halt...
Hu San's movements came to a halt. He slowly turned around and saw Zhan Yu standing at the entrance of the alley with several black-clad bodyguards, looking like a god descending from heaven. He exuded an icy rage, his eyes sharp enough to kill.
"Let her go!" Zhan Yu's voice was low and dangerous, and every word seemed to be squeezed out from between his teeth.
Hu San looked at the bodyguards behind Zhan Yu, then looked at us in front of him, knowing that he would not be able to gain any advantage today, so he glared at me fiercely and spat, "You are lucky!" Then he fled in a hurry with his men.
I finally breathed a sigh of relief, my legs gave way, and I nearly collapsed to the ground. Shadow quickly caught me and asked with concern, "Are you okay?"
I shook my head, indicating I was fine. Zhan Yu strode over to me, looked me up and down, and was relieved to see that I was not injured except for my pale face. He held my hand tightly, and the warmth from his palm made me feel extremely reassured.
"I'm fine..." My voice was still a little trembling, but my tone was much calmer.
Zhan Yu didn't say anything, but just held me tightly in his arms, as if he wanted to rub me into his bones and blood. I know he is afraid, afraid of losing me.
Back at the Zhan family, the adrenaline in my body gradually subsided, and fatigue and pain swept over me. Only then did I realize that my arm was cut and bleeding.
"How could you be so careless!" Zhan Yu examined my wound with concern and quickly called the family doctor to treat me.
I sat on the sofa, letting the doctor disinfect and bandage my wound, but my heart was cold. I turned to look out the window. The sun was setting, and the sky was burning with a fiery red cloud. It was so beautiful that it was shocking.
"Madam, you'd better go out less in the future. It's so dangerous outside!" Mo Qinxin appeared behind me at some point, with a hint of sarcastic concern in his tone.
I glanced at her coldly and said, "It's not your turn to tell me what to do."
Mo Qinxin's face froze, but she quickly regained her composure. She sighed and said earnestly, "Madam, you come from a prominent family, so naturally you're not afraid of these ruffians. But have you ever thought about how your every move affects the reputation of the Zhan family? If anything happens to you, Master and Madam will be so sad! Moreover, those with ulterior motives will also take the opportunity to attack the Zhan family, and then..."
She hadn't finished her words, but the threat was already evident. I looked at her hypocritical face and sneered inwardly. She wasn't really concerned about me at all; she was clearly trying to sow discord between me and the Zhan family!
My silence only made Mo Qinxin even more pleased. She thought she had successfully sown a thorn between me and Zhan Yu. She turned, a barely perceptible sneer curling her lips, and then, with graceful steps, she left the living room... After Mo Qinxin left, my heart sank to the bottom. Her words, though well-spoken, were piercing, rubbing salt into my wounds. I knew she would exaggerate what happened today and tell my mother-in-law. What kind of storm would I face then?
As expected, at dinner time, my mother-in-law called me to her room with a gloomy face.
"I heard that you went out to cause trouble again today?" She sat on the armchair, her tone cold and intimidating without even getting angry.
"I just went out to do something." I answered as calmly as possible, not wanting to have a direct confrontation with her.
"What is it that requires a woman like you to show up in public? Do you know how much trouble you will bring to the Zhan family by doing this?" The mother-in-law slammed the table and said angrily.
"Mom, it's not her fault. I asked her to do it." Zhan Yu suddenly appeared, stood in front of me, and said in a firm tone.
"You..." The mother-in-law pointed at Zhan Yu, speechless with anger, "How dare you talk to me like this for a woman!"
"Mom, why can't you understand us? We just want to find out the truth and give everyone justice!" Zhan Yu's voice also rose a few degrees.
"The truth? What truth? I think you have been bewitched by this woman and can't even tell right from wrong!" the mother-in-law scolded.
"Mom, how can you say that!?" I couldn't hold it in any longer, tears welled up in my eyes, "I did all this for the Zhan family, for you and Dad! Why don't you believe me?"
"That's enough!" my mother-in-law yelled, interrupting me. "From today on, you are not allowed to go anywhere. Stay home!"
My heart completely sank. Was my mother-in-law going to put me under house arrest? I looked up at Zhan Yu, hoping he would say something, do something.
Zhan Yu held my hand tightly, his eyes firm and gentle, "Mom, you can't do this to her! She is my wife, I will protect her!"
"You..." My mother-in-law was so angry that she was shaking all over and pointed at us without saying a word for a long time.
"Let's go!" Zhan Yu took my hand and turned to leave my mother-in-law's room.
When we returned to the room, Zhan Yu held me in his arms and comforted me softly, "Don't be afraid, I'm here."
I leaned in his arms, feeling his warmth, but tears kept flowing. I knew this was just the calm before the storm, and the real test was still to come.
"Dong dong dong..."
There was a rapid knock on the door, interrupting our thoughts.
"Master, Madam, the master asks you to go to the study right now." The butler said respectfully outside the door.
My heart sank suddenly, and I had a premonition that something bad was about to happen...
In the study, the atmosphere was so solemn it felt like water could drip from it. My father-in-law sat on a mahogany armchair, his face sullen, his cane tapping the floor repeatedly with a dull thud. My mother-in-law sat beside him, her eyes red and swollen, wiping them from time to time with a handkerchief.
"You two are becoming more and more outrageous!" the father-in-law said in a low and authoritative voice, "Do you still regard me as your elder, and do you still regard this family as yours?"
I held Zhan Yu's hand tightly, feeling the warmth of his palm, trying to draw some strength from him. Zhan Yu shook my hand back and gave me an encouraging look.
"Dad, we just want to find out the truth." Zhan Yu's tone was calm, but with unquestionable determination.
"The truth? What truth?" The father-in-law slammed the table and roared, "The case you are investigating now will drag the Zhan family into an irretrievable situation, do you know that?"
I took a deep breath, tried to control my emotions, and said, "Dad, I know what you're worried about, but if this matter is not thoroughly investigated, our Zhan family will never be able to get rid of suspicion. Instead of passively taking a beating, it is better to take the initiative and find out the mastermind behind this, so that the problem can be solved completely."
My father-in-law was silent. He looked at me with a complicated expression, as if he was weighing something. Seeing this, my mother-in-law hurriedly said, "Dad, don't listen to her nonsense! She just wants to use the name of investigating the case to ruin our Zhan family's reputation!"
"Enough!" The father-in-law shouted at the mother-in-law, "I have made up my mind about this matter. I will do as Zhan Yu said. However, you must promise not to make a big deal out of it and not let the Zhan family suffer any losses!"
Zhan Yu and I looked at each other and saw the determination in each other's eyes. We said in unison, "We promise!"
Coming out of the study, I felt a sense of relief. While the road ahead was still fraught with obstacles, at least we had my father-in-law's support, which undoubtedly gave us great encouragement. I knew I couldn't give up just because of my mother-in-law's obstruction or the potential danger. I had to continue my investigation, no matter how difficult it would be.
Over the next few days, I became even more cautious. I knew my situation was becoming even more dangerous, and those enemies lurking in the shadows would surely find ways to stop me. I began to stay at home, rarely going out, and even when I did go out, I was always accompanied by a few bodyguards.
One evening, as I was preparing to have dinner with Zhan Yu, I suddenly heard a commotion outside. My heart tightened, and a sense of foreboding came over me.
"What's going on?" I asked the servant beside me.
"Madam, it seems that several unidentified people have broken in." The servant said with a pale face and a trembling voice.
I immediately realized that this was directed at me. I turned to look at Zhan Yu, only to see that his expression had also become solemn.
"You hide first, I'll go take a look." Zhan Yu said, then stood up and walked out the door.
"No, I'll go with you!" I grabbed his hand and said firmly.
Zhan Yu looked at me with worry in his eyes, but finally nodded.
We walked to the door together and saw several men in black fighting with our bodyguards. They were agile and their moves were deadly. They were obviously well-trained killers.
My heart sank to the bottom. It seemed that this attack was premeditated and the other party was determined to kill me.
Zhan Yu protected me behind him and fought the man in black. Although he was quite skilled, he was outnumbered and gradually lost the upper hand. I was extremely anxious, but I couldn't help at all.
At that moment, a man in black suddenly bypassed Zhan Yu and lunged at me. I screamed in shock and instinctively closed my eyes. However, the expected pain didn't come. I opened my eyes and saw Zhan Yu standing in front of me, a bloody wound on his arm that was shocking.
"Zhan Yu!" I screamed and threw myself on him, tears streaming down my face uncontrollably.
He hugged me tightly and whispered, "Don't be afraid, I'm fine..."
Suddenly, the housekeeper ran over in a panic, holding a letter in his hand: "Master, Madam, there is... there is a letter, it says... it says it is for Madam..."
