The ancient war between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law in a wealthy family
Chapter 22: Stormy Undercurrents and Unrest
After Zhan Jianye was taken away, the atmosphere in the conference room relaxed considerably. I looked around at everyone, and everyone's face was filled with relief at having survived the ordeal. But I knew this was only the calm before the storm. Family business struggles never end overnight.
"Everyone, today's accident has served as a wake-up call for everyone and has also made us more united." Zhan Yu's voice rang out again, steady and powerful. "I believe that as long as we work together, we will be able to overcome all difficulties and jointly protect the honor of our family."
The applause rang out again, and I looked at the high-spirited Zhan Yu, my heart filled with pride. However, I did not let the victory go to my head, my intuition told me that this matter was not over yet.
After the meeting, I stayed in the conference room to sort through documents. Suddenly, a document caught my eye. It was about the family inheritance distribution plan. I remembered seeing it before, but the content on this document seemed a little different.
I carefully compared the document in my hand with the contents in my memory, and the more I read, the more shocked I became. The contents of this document clearly favored the Song branch, while the portion of the inheritance that originally belonged to Zhan Yu was drastically reduced.
Could it be that someone had tampered with this? A bold guess emerged in my mind, and this person was most likely Song Pangzhi! I immediately thought of Song Pangzhi's hypocritical smile, and I felt disgusted.
I took the document to Zhan Yu and told him my discovery. He took the document and read it carefully, his brow furrowing more and more.
"This matter is indeed strange." Zhan Yu pondered for a moment, "It seems that we have underestimated the ambitions of the Song branch."
"So what do we do now?" I asked.
"Since they want to play, we will play with them to the end." A cold light flashed in Zhan Yu's eyes, "I want to see what tricks they want to play."
We decided to start with the family archives to find more original data on the distribution of the estate. However, when we arrived at the archives, we were stopped by Mr. Qin.
"What are you going to do?" asked Old Qin with a bad look on his face.
"Mr. Qin, we want to look up some information." I tried to speak in a calm tone.
"No!" Old Qin refused flatly. "How can you just enter the family archives whenever you want?"
"Mr. Qin, we just want to look up some information and have no other intentions," I explained.
"No means no!" Old Qin said firmly, "This is the family rule!"
Looking at Mr. Qin's resolute attitude, I couldn't help but feel a little puzzled. Why did he stop us from entering the archives? Could it be... that he was hiding something from us?
"Mr. Qin..." I was about to speak, but was stopped by Zhan Yu.
"Since Mr. Qin is unwilling, we won't force him." Zhan Yu said lightly, but I could clearly feel the chill in his tone, "Let's go."
I looked at Mr. Qin deeply, then turned and left with Zhan Yu. I knew this matter was becoming increasingly complicated...
Coming out of the archives, Zhan Yu's face was terribly gloomy. I held his hand, trying to offer some comfort, but he squeezed mine back with such force that it nearly crushed my bones. I knew he was filled with as much anger and worry as I was. Elder Qin's unusual behavior only confirmed our previous suspicions. There was probably more to this matter than we'd imagined.
"It seems that we have to find another way." Zhan Yu took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down.
"Yes." I nodded. "Since we can't get into the archives, we can start from other places. For example, we can contact the lawyer who handled the estate distribution back then."
Zhan Yu gave me an appreciative look and said, "Good idea. I'll contact them right away."
Over the next few days, we searched extensively for more leads. However, progress was slow. The lawyer had been retired for years and his contact information had changed. We struggled to find him, but he refused to discuss the incident, claiming it was so long ago that he couldn't remember clearly.
I had a vague feeling that the lawyer's attitude was a little strange, as if he was deliberately hiding something. However, we had no evidence and could not force him to tell the truth.
Just when we were at a loss, an accident happened.
That day, we had just left the lawyer's house, on our way to visit a family elder. The car was driving along a busy street, the sun streaming in through the windows, a warm glow. I was discussing the case with Zhan Yu when suddenly, there was a loud bang, followed by a violent shake of the car body.
"What's going on?" I exclaimed and subconsciously grabbed Zhan Yu's arm.
"I don't know." Zhan Yu's face changed and he immediately asked the driver to stop the car and check.
The driver got out of the car to check and came back to report that the tire was blown.
"Flat tire?" A hint of doubt arose in my mind. The road conditions of this road are very good, and our car is maintained regularly. How could it suddenly have a flat tire?
Zhan Yu's expression became more and more solemn, and he seemed to have noticed something was wrong.
"Let's change the tire first." He said in a deep voice.
Just as the driver was about to change the tire, a truck suddenly rushed over from the side and hit our car straight.
"Be careful!" Zhan Yu shouted and protected me under his body.
With a loud bang, our car was knocked over and fell to the ground.
I felt dizzy and my ears were buzzing. When I regained consciousness, I found myself being held tightly in Zhan Yu's arms. He was covered in blood, and my heart suddenly jumped into my throat.
"Zhan Yu, how are you?" I asked anxiously.
"I'm fine." Zhan Yu's voice was a little weak, but he still tried to force a smile, "I'm glad you're okay."
I then realized that we were trapped in the car. The door was stuck and couldn't be opened.
"Don't be afraid, I will rescue you." Zhan Yu comforted me.
He pushed hard at the door, but it wouldn't budge.
Just then, I saw a figure flash by outside the car window. I seemed to have seen that figure somewhere before...
Song Bangzhi! This name suddenly flashed through my mind.
Could it be that he did all this?
I was about to tell Zhan Yu about my discovery when suddenly, I heard a strange noise overhead. I looked up and saw a huge flower pot teetering on the edge of collapse...
"Zhan Yu..." I just called out his name...
"Be careful!" Zhan Yu suddenly pulled me into his arms, and I fell into his arms, still in shock. The next second, the huge flower pot smashed into the car window, shattering the glass instantly and sending fragments flying. I closed my eyes tightly in fear, and the deafening crash and Zhan Yu's rapid breathing filled my ears.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here." Zhan Yu's voice trembled slightly, but it gave me a great sense of security.
I opened my eyes and saw him trying to shield me with his body. Broken glass had cut his forehead, and blood was flowing. My heart felt like it was being gripped by an invisible hand, and the pain was so severe that I couldn't breathe.
This is clearly a carefully planned murder!
We finally managed to climb out of the deformed car. My legs gave out and I nearly fell. Zhan Yu quickly caught me. He looked at me with a complicated expression: worry, self-blame, and, more importantly, a sense of determination.
"We must find out the truth as soon as possible." He said in a deep voice, with an unprecedented firmness in his tone.
I understand what he means. This is no longer a simple family feud; it's a matter of life and death. We must take the initiative to seize the initiative.
Our first thought was to get clues from other family members, but when we visited them one by one, we were disappointed again and again. Some of them were evasive and talked about other things; some simply avoided us, as if we were some kind of monster.
"They are all afraid." Zhan Yu clenched his fists, his tone bitter, "Afraid of offending the Song branch, afraid of losing everything they have now."
I was silent. Human nature always seems so fragile in the face of interests.
"Are we just going to sit here and wait for death?" I leaned weakly on the sofa, feeling that the future was bleak.
Zhan Yu didn't say anything. He walked to the window and looked at the bustling city outside with deep and cold eyes.
"No, we still have a chance." He turned around, a look of determination in his eyes. "Since they don't want to tell us, then we'll go find it ourselves."
I know what he meant when he said "find it yourself".
"What are you going to do?" I asked, with a barely perceptible tremor in my voice.
Zhan Yu walked to my side and gently held my hand. His hand was warm and strong, as if giving me unlimited strength.
"Song's branch isn't omnipotent, and not everyone around him is invincible." His voice was low and firm. "Let's start with the people around him. We might get unexpected results."
My heart sank suddenly. I knew that this meant we would face greater risks and might even push ourselves into a more dangerous situation.
"Are you afraid?" Zhan Yu looked into my eyes and asked seriously.
I took a deep breath, met his gaze, and said word by word, "I..."
"Of course I'm afraid." Facing Zhan Yu's gaze, I admitted frankly, "I'm afraid of losing you, afraid of losing the life we worked so hard to build."
Zhan Yu held me in his arms. His arms were broad and warm, dispelling the fear in my heart.
"Don't be afraid, I will protect you." His voice was low and firm, like a promise and an oath.
We hugged each other tightly, like two birds keeping each other warm in a storm.
After several days of investigation, we locked onto a man named Hu San who was close to Song Pangzhi. On the surface, he was Song Pangzhi's driver, but in reality, he was his confidant, responsible for handling some of his shady dealings.
"We need to find a way to get close to Hu San and extract useful information from him." Zhan Yu pointed at Hu San's photo on the computer screen and analyzed calmly, "However, he is cunning and suspicious, so we must proceed with caution."
I understand that this is a huge gamble, and we are betting our future and even our lives.
"What should I do?" I looked at Zhan Yu with a firm look in my eyes.
Zhan Yu pondered for a moment and said, "Hu San goes to Zuixianlou every Friday night to drink. You can create an 'encounter' and find a way to get close to him."
"Zuixianlou" is a famous den of brothel in the city, where all kinds of people gather. It is not easy to approach the target there without being discovered.
"Don't worry, I will arrange someone to pick you up." Zhan Yu seemed to see my worry and comforted me softly.
On Friday night, as planned, I changed into low-key clothes and went to a cafe near Zuixianlou.
Through the glass window of the cafe, I saw a black car slowly stop at the door of "Zuixianlou". A short and fat man with a fat face got out of the car. It was Hu San.
My heart started beating faster and my palms were sweaty.
"Don't be nervous, take a deep breath." A voice sounded in my ear.
I turned around and saw that it was the person arranged by Zhan Yu to pick me up, codenamed "Shadow".
"The time is right. I'll cover you." Shadow said, handing me a glass of spiked red wine. "Remember, you only have ten minutes."
I took a deep breath, took the red wine, opened the door of the cafe, and walked towards Zuixianlou...
I pretended to be drunk, stumbled to Hu San, and poured the red wine in my hand on him.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I didn't mean it." I apologized hurriedly, trying to take the opportunity to get closer to him.
Hu San was suddenly splashed with red wine and immediately became furious.
"Who are you? Don't you have eyes when you walk?" He grabbed my arm and asked viciously.
I was startled, and before I could even open my mouth to explain, I felt a strong gust of wind coming from behind me...
