Chapter 8: Life and Death
The night was dark. The carriage sped along the winding mountain road, its wheels making a dull thud as they rolled over stones. The shadows of the surrounding trees swayed in the moonlight, making the scene even more eerie. Inside the carriage, Yun Junrui's expression was solemn. Though poisoned, his gaze remained sharp, fixed fixedly on the road ahead. Luo Qi sat across from him, a silver needle in hand, his brow furrowed, ready for any eventuality.
Outside the carriage, Mo Yan, Mo Xian, Mo Dong, Mo Nan, Mo Xi, and Mo Bei lined up in a row, ready for battle. They knew that tonight would be anything but peaceful. Although a body double had been arranged in the East Palace to provide cover, the enemy was well-informed and wouldn't let the real Crown Prince go easily.
Suddenly, the sound of hurried horse hooves shattered the silence of the mountains. Luo Qi and Yun Junrui exchanged glances, a sense of foreboding rising in their hearts. Mo Yan's nerves tensed instantly, and he whispered, "Be on guard!"
Sure enough, around the corner, a group of men in black emerged like a tide, quickly surrounding the carriage. They were fully armed, their gazes grim, and clearly rigorously trained warriors. The driver desperately tried to drive the horses, but the other men were well prepared. Several sharp arrows pierced the air, accurately killing the horses pulling the carriage.
The carriage lost control and shook violently, causing Rocky and Yun Junrui to fall simultaneously. Yun Junrui braced himself, steadying Rocky's hand and saying in a deep voice, "Rocky, protect yourself!" His voice was low, yet it carried an irresistible authority.
Outside the car, Mo Yan and his companions engaged in a fierce battle with the men in black. Swords clashed, sparks flew, and the blood was particularly dazzling in the moonlight. Mo Xian's twin blades danced like the wind, each strike deadly. Mo Yan, like an immovable mountain, steady as Mount Tai, calmly responding to each attack. Mo Dong, Mo Nan, Mo Xi, and Mo Bei, working in perfect harmony, tore a crack in the black-clad encirclement, attempting to carve a path for the Crown Prince and Luo Qi.
However, at that moment, the carriage jolted violently, catching Yun Junrui off guard and throwing him violently. Rocky reached out to grab him, but his fingers only touched Yun Junrui's sleeve. Watching Yun Junrui's figure disappear over the edge of the cliff, Rocky felt as if his heart had been struck hard.
"Your Highness!" Rocky screamed, his voice filled with unconcealable fear and despair.
Mo Yan heard the shout and snapped back, just in time to see Yun Junrui falling. A flicker of despair flashed across his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by calm. He swung his blade with all his might, slashing the enemy before him. He then flew towards the cliff's edge, only to find Yun Junrui's figure swallowed by darkness.
"Modong, Monan, Moxi, Mobei, escort Rocky and retreat!" Mo Yan ordered. His voice was cold and firm, leaving no room for anyone to question.
The men in black saw Yun Junrui fall off the cliff, their target accomplished, and quickly retreated. Mo Yan followed closely behind, riding his horse in pursuit for a distance, and only after confirming that they would not return did he return to search for Yun Junrui's whereabouts.
Mo Yan, Mo Xian, and Luo Qi, along with the few remaining guards, quickly descended the cliffs and began searching along the river. The night wind mingled with drizzle, the cold rain lashing their faces, chilling them to the bone. The river's rapid flow, its surging waters mocking their powerlessness. Mo Yan's gaze was resolute, his teeth clenched, suppressing his anxiety. "His Highness won't die so easily. He must still be alive."
Mo Xian knelt down by the river, his hands clenched into fists, his heart filled with regret and self-blame: "If we had discovered the enemy earlier, Your Highness would not have..."
"Now is not the time to blame yourself." Mo Yan interrupted Mo Xian and forced himself to calm down. "We haven't seen His Highness's body yet. He must still be alive."
Rocky remained silent, his fingers trembling slightly in the cold wind. He knew Yun Junrui was already weak, and the fall from the cliff had made his situation even more critical. He couldn't stop; he had to find him and save him.
They searched along the riverbank, but Yun Junrui seemed to vanish into the darkness. Every second of waiting was a torture to their souls. In the valley, only the whisper of the wind murmured, as if whispering a lament for the unquenchable anxiety and fear in their hearts.
