Chapter 704 Confronting the Desert
"The wound has turned black; it's poisonous!"
"Green Shadow said in a low voice."
As Elwin attacked, he strode forward, the light from his staff illuminating Akalitha's arm.
Sure enough, the skin around the bitten area lost its normal color, turning a grayish-brown similar to sand, and this discoloration was spreading outwards at a visible rate.
"I feel... a little cold,"
Akalitasa gritted her teeth as sweat dripped from her forehead.
"Starting from the wound, my whole body started to feel cold."
"Damn,"
Elwin cursed. He knew that the little red dragon was fine even in the frigid Winterspring wearing only a single layer of clothing, but now it was feeling cold. This corpse poison was too domineering!
"It is indeed poison. Green Shadow, can you remove it?"
"Let me try!"
Green Shadow quickly took out a small bottle of medicine from her waist pouch.
"This toxicity is too potent, and my antidote spell might not work. Luckily, I picked some earthroot and moon mushrooms along the way. These are extracts that can slow down most undead toxins. I don't know if they will be effective in this situation."
She poured the pale blue liquid onto the wound; the medicine hissed and emitted a wisp of smoke as it came into contact with the grayish-brown skin.
Akalitassa gasped, but the rate of spread did seem to have slowed.
Green Shadow brought her hands close to Akali's wound and quickly chanted a spell, causing green natural energy to flow from her fingertips into Akali's wound.
"We need to get out of here first. My Undead Lock isn't working! These guys turned into sand and floated away! Holy magic doesn't seem to do much damage to them either, these damned zombies!"
Elwin waved his staff, unleashing various spells, but the shattered zombies were instantly reforged by sand and split into even more, moving slowly but already very close to the three of them.
"Mantra: Barrier!"
Elwynn's staff was planted in the ground, and a golden orb of light instantly appeared, blocking the troll's advance.
The ugly monster was attacked by the golden barrier, making a sizzling sound.
Looking around, more sand dunes are rising, forming new zombies.
Akali recovered quickly under Green Shadow's healing and was helped to her feet by him.
“Elwin, it seems they are using our magical energy. The magic generated by each attack seems to be providing the power they need to reorganize.”
Green Shadow placed her hand on Elwin's shoulder.
"This kind of attack is not the way to go."
Alvin suddenly realized: "You mean...we're helping them become stronger?"
“Observe the direction of the sand flow,”
The green shadow pointed to the ground.
“Look at those areas that have been impacted by energy, the ground struck by your holy fire, the sand grains have become unusually active.”
Alvin felt a chill run down his spine.
If Green Shadow's speculation is correct, then they are not facing ordinary undead, but some kind of construct capable of absorbing and converting energy.
Worse still, they were completely unprepared for this, and the number of enemies was constantly increasing.
More than a dozen zombies have regrouped and formed an encirclement.
They come in all shapes and sizes; some retain the general outline of their original form, while others are completely distorted, like collages from a nightmare.
All the zombies' empty eye sockets were fixed on the three, especially Akalitha, who had just been injured—the smell of fresh blood seemed to make them even more restless.
"Or should I transform and lead everyone to escape first?"
Akalitha asked, as she tried to bandage her wound.
"But the sandstorm is too strong, I'm afraid I'll squint and lose my sense of direction!"
"Ugh!"
Elwin admitted that he had underestimated his opponent. Who would have thought that such a strange monster would appear? Just as he was thinking of going back to Gadgetzan to rest, Green Shadow spoke again.
"If they rely on sand to recombine, then changing the terrain might be able to control them. I think this method should work!"
Erwin nodded, having made up his mind.
"Akali, can you fight?"
The little red dragon smiled, "The daughter of the Red Dragon Queen won't fall down because of a minor injury!"
"Alright! Then we'll hold off these guys for Green Shadow and create an opportunity for her to cast her spell!"
"Yes!"
As Akalitha spoke, she breathed fire from her mouth, shattering a troll zombie.
But instead of retreating, they rammed the barrier even more frantically.
"Akalitas, get away from the shield! Stop attacking, there will be more and more! Let's wait for the Green Shadow's magic to take effect!"
The zombies rammed against the barrier like madmen, each impact making Elwin's face paler. Maintaining such a protective spell consumed a great deal of mental energy.
"These guys are driving me crazy!"
Akalitta roared, "If I could fly, I'd burn them all to ashes!"
Alvin gave a wry smile, but his smile quickly faded as he realized the zombies were no longer charging blindly, but instead trying to concentrate their attacks on a single point of the barrier.
This simple tactical coordination shows that these monsters do not rely entirely on instinct; these creatures either possess intelligence or are being commanded by someone.
"The controller must be nearby,"
Alvin said, panting.
"Such precise manipulation could not have occurred without a source."
"You mean someone deliberately set up these zombies to block our way?"
"It's normal,"
Elwin added, "Zul'Farrak is just ahead, the stronghold of the Sandfury troll tribe. They must have noticed us."
Alvin's heart skipped a beat.
According to those goblins, the sandstorms and zombies only appeared recently. Did they know I was coming?
I don't have any grudge against those trolls, wait... could it be that they've joined forces with Cho'gall?!
"Brother Elwin! The barrier is cracking!" Akalitha shouted.
"I know!"
Alvin gritted his teeth and persevered. He couldn't afford to think too much at this moment. To make matters worse, the consequences of excessive mental energy consumption began to appear: his head was throbbing and his vision was blurry.
He could feel the flow of divine energy becoming disordered, like a flood about to burst its banks.
A troll zombie seized the moment the barrier flickered, its sandy fist shattering the barrier and striking Elwin directly in the chest.
Akalitha quickly stepped in front of Elwin, and with a wave of her small hand, she sent the zombie flying. The monster crashed heavily onto the sand, shattering into pieces.
But the zombie horde swarmed in.
Akalitha roared and instantly transformed into a red storm, severing the first two zombies that pounced on her.
But there were too many of them. A zombie grabbed her injured arm from the side, and the intense pain made her momentarily stop moving.
Just then, Green Shadow's magic was finally ready.
"Seed of life, grow!" she cried out in the ancient Elven language.
Several seeds fell into the sand and instantly sprouted and grew, growing into a giant thorny vine at an incredible speed.
Thorny vines entangled the nearest zombies, restricting their movement.
Even more amazingly, the plant roots penetrated deep into the sand, seemingly absorbing some kind of energy from the soil, and more and more vines sprouted from the sand, entangled all the zombies around them.
this......
"Planting trees to combat desertification?!"
Alvin stared in disbelief at the vast expanse of green vines that had sprung up in an instant, marveling at the natural magic of the green shadows.
"It's natural magic. That's how the Cenarion Circle heals the earth."
Green Shadow gasped as she explained, her face pale from the spell.
"But the effect is limited, let's hurry!"
