The Legend of Cinderella's Counterattack
Chapter 16 The Edge of Despair
"Damn it!" Lu Yuxuan's angry growl echoed in my ears, but it felt like a thick wall between them, so unreal. My eyes were fixed on the note, and every word on it was like a sharp blade, piercing my eyes and my heart. Morrison, that name was like the tongue of a venomous snake, carrying a chilling and deathly aura, tightly entangling me.
"What does he want? Money? Power? He's already taken it all..." My voice trembled, barely able to form a complete sentence. Despair surged over me like a tide, and I felt like I was about to be drowned.
Lawrence Lu pulled me into his arms, his body trembling slightly. I could feel the emotions he was trying so hard to suppress, like a volcano about to erupt. "Lolo, calm down. We will definitely save the baby." His voice was low and hoarse, but with unquestionable determination.
But how? What could I do? Should I make a deal with the devil? My mind was a mess. Fear, despair, anger, self-blame—all these emotions mingled together, tearing me apart.
We locked ourselves in the study, not sleeping all night. The ashtray on the table was piled high with cigarette butts, and the air was filled with the suffocating smell of tobacco. Lawrence Lu kept making calls, mobilizing all the resources he could to find Morrison and the baby. And I, like a wounded little animal, could only curl up on the sofa, helplessly praying for a miracle.
The long night finally passed, and the sky began to turn pale. However, what awaited us was even more despairing news. Morrison had vanished from the face of the earth, leaving no trace.
“No, nothing…” Lawrence Lu put down the phone weakly, rubbing his eyebrows tiredly, his eyes full of bloodshot.
I walked up to him, held his cold hand, and finally couldn't hold back the tears that burst out, "Yuxuan, let's...let's exchange ourselves for the child." I know that this may be our only hope. Even if the hope is slim, we must grasp this last straw.
Lawrence Lu suddenly raised his head, and the pain and struggle in his eyes made my heart ache. He knew, and I knew, that this was probably a road of no return, but for the sake of the child, we had no choice.
"Okay, let's go and get the child back." He hugged me tightly, his voice hoarse and firm, as if he was declaring war on fate.
Morrison called again, his voice filled with a cold sense of triumph. "Have you thought it through? Are you ready to pay the price?"
I took a deep breath, suppressed the fear and anger in my heart, and tried to make my voice sound calm. "Tell me, what do you want? Time and place."
"Very good. At 12 noon today, at the abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city, I will only give you one hour. No one will be accepted after the time is up." After saying that, a busy tone came from the other end of the phone.
After hanging up the phone, Lawrence Lu and I looked at each other, each seeing determination in the other's eyes. We packed up our belongings, told no one, and drove straight to the abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city.
The abandoned factory was eerie, surrounded by weeds, and the air was filled with the smell of decay. Lu Yuxuan and I walked hand in hand into the dilapidated factory building, my heart sinking with every step.
In the center of the factory, Morrison sat on a chair, holding a sleeping baby in his arms. When he saw us, a sinister smile curved his lips, and a mad glint flashed in his eyes.
"You're finally here." He said, hugging the baby tighter. "Very good, I'm punctual. It's five minutes to 12 o'clock now."
I felt like I was about to stop breathing, my heart was beating so hard in my chest that it almost burst through my chest. I stared at my baby's sleeping face, tears silently sliding down my cheeks.
“Morrison, give me the child, I will agree to whatever you want.” Lawrence Lu’s voice was low and hoarse, with suppressed anger.
"Hahaha, Mr. Lu, you are so naive. You can't give me what I want." Morrison laughed arrogantly, his eyes full of the pleasure of revenge.
At this moment, a siren suddenly blared outside the factory, its piercing sound piercing the dead silence. Morrison's face changed, and he looked around in horror.
"What's going on? Why are the police here?"
Before we could react, a group of police rushed into the factory from all directions and surrounded us.
"Don't move! Put the child down and raise your hands!" the leading policeman shouted loudly.
I widened my eyes in disbelief. Could it be... that the housekeeper called the police?
"Sir, Madam, I felt something was wrong, so I secretly called the police. Thank God, you are fine, and the young master is fine too!" The butler squeezed in from behind the police, his face full of anxiety and worry.
My nose felt sore and tears welled up in my eyes again. The butler, this loyal old man, brought us the dawn of hope when we were most desperate.
"Damn it!" Morrison cursed. Seeing the situation was not good, he suddenly lifted the child above his head and pressed the sharp dagger against the child's tender skin. "Don't come over! If anyone dares to come one step closer, I will kill him!"
The child was frightened and cried loudly, and Lu Yuxuan and I were both heartbroken.
“Morrison, calm down! The child is innocent!” Lawrence Lu suppressed his anger and tried to calm Morrison’s emotions.
"Innocent? Hahaha, when you took away everything from me, why didn't you think that I was innocent!" Morrison looked crazy, roaring hysterically, his eyes full of hatred and despair.
During the confrontation, I noticed that Morrison’s attention was completely focused on Lawrence Lu. He stared at Lawrence Lu intently, with a crazy gleam of revenge in his eyes, and the dagger in his hand loosened unconsciously.
I took a deep breath, suppressed the fear in my heart, and while Morrison was not paying attention, I suddenly lunged forward and hit Morrison with all my strength. Almost at the same time, Lawrence Lu also seized the opportunity, flew up, and kicked the dagger in Morrison's hand away.
"Baby!" I exclaimed and rushed forward desperately to catch the child.
At the critical moment, Lawrence Lu was quick-eyed and quick-handed. He rushed forward and caught the child steadily.
Seeing that his plan was exposed, Morrison struggled to escape, but was surrounded by police who had rushed to the scene and was eventually subdued.
I got up from the ground, stumbled to Lawrence Lu, took the child from his hands, and held him tightly in my arms. There were still traces of tears on the child's little face. I kissed his forehead distressedly, "Baby, my baby, it's okay, it's okay..."
The child was safely rescued, and our family of three was finally reunited. However, I couldn't feel happy in my heart because I knew that although Morrison had been caught, the mastermind behind the crime had not yet been found. This nightmare was not truly over yet...
