In the middle of the night, Louis's phone rang.
It was her mother's voice on the other end:
"Have you been not eating properly?"
Louis was scrolling through his phone, watching a TV series that Gu You'er had recommended before. For some reason, he was unusually awake tonight, as if he had eaten a full meal, and didn't watch anything. He then held his phone away and checked the time; it was three in the morning.
"No, Mom, who told you that? Of course I have one, otherwise how would I have the energy to run around everywhere since school just started?"
There was no response from the other end, so it was unclear whether they believed it or not.
"Little Louis, if you really can't hold on any longer, tell your parents." It was Louis's father's voice on the other end. He was a little far away, but you could guess that he was standing near his mother, leaning over to speak.
Mom clicked her tongue: "A doting father spoils his son. He swore he would fully support him before, but now he's finding a way out for him. Isn't this ruining the child's life?"
Louis's father muttered a couple of things and then fell silent. Louis, as if he had been scolded, shrank back and said, "Mom, if there's nothing else, I'll hang up now. I have class tomorrow."
The mother on the other end seemed to sigh, and without saying anything more, she finally ended the call.
After putting down his phone, Louis still felt a bit down. He got up and walked around the room, did some push-ups, and then stood up and looked around the bedroom again, but there was nothing he could use to exercise.
Louis remembered the coffee table in the living room. He pushed open the door and found that the light in the master bedroom across the way had been turned off at some point, indicating that the person in the master bedroom had already gone to sleep.
Are you really asleep?
Louis couldn't control his feet. He could still smell that familiar fragrance, but when he smelled it again after waking up today, it didn't give him the same burning thirst he used to feel.
Louis, like a thief, pressed his ear against the other person's door again.
There was no sound or movement from inside the door.
Louis paused for a few seconds, then went back to his bedroom.
The next morning, as soon as the door across the street creaked, Louis immediately turned the doorknob.
Rong Yuzhuo was wearing pajamas and had a gray towel draped over her hand.
Good morning, Xiaoyuzhuo!
Louis had a head of bright red hair, more radiant than the eight o'clock sun.
Rong Yuzhuo nodded and walked towards the shared bathroom: "Good morning."
Louis followed behind, nearly stepping on Rong Yuzhuo's heel: "Do you have time today? I want to buy some things for our kitchen, shall we go shopping together?"
Rong Yuzhuo hadn't expected this. He went straight to the restroom. He had been tutoring high school students he had previously arranged to meet. The parents had advanced him some tutoring fees, and he was quite busy, so he ate in the cafeteria. Although the cafeteria was already very cheap, given his appetite, it would be more convenient for him to cook for himself in the long run to get a full meal.
"Is tonight okay?"
Louis nodded: "Sure, sure, after your military training is over."
The two agreed that they would go to school together after they finished packing. Rong Yuzhuo went to military training, while Louis bought some drinks and waited in the shade for Gu You'er and the others from his class to rest.
During their free time, Gu You'er and her friends came over and took good care of Louis. They formed a circle around him, as if feeding some rare little animal, and people from other colleges also frequently looked over.
Louis was mistaken for a "sickly beauty" with "allergies and hypoglycemia," and the person who only showed her small face eventually walked out of the playground with a bunch of snacks in her arms.
With nothing much to do during the day, Louis took a leisurely stroll around the entire campus. Although he walked along the edge in the shade, his mood remained completely unaffected.
In the afternoon, for some reason, Gu You'er sent her a message saying that someone asked her for Louis's contact information and asked if Louis wanted to give it to her. Louis didn't expect such a windfall to fall into his lap, so he readily agreed. In a row, seven or eight people added him as a friend. Louis was flattered and added each of them and greeted them happily.
Among the newly added people were not only students from their own department, but also students from other departments. Upon closer inspection, apart from one male student from the Computer Science department, they were all female.
Some were very talkative, while others added him as a friend and then never responded. Louis didn't quite understand, but he still replied to them all in a friendly manner and even made plans to hang out together sometime.
After military training ended in the evening, Louis waited for Rong Yuzhuo near the computer science classroom. Since it was completely dark, Louis hadn't brought any sunscreen, and he looked like a lychee, his face glowing white.
At the command of the instructor, who was tanned like charcoal, the crowd buzzed and dispersed. Louis squinted as he looked for Rong Yuzhuo's location when suddenly an unfamiliar boy walked up to him.
"Louis?"
Louis had already smelled the other person's sweat and a hint of perfume. The combination of these two smells was less tolerable than the pure smell of sweat.
Louis looked at the other person's face; he had never seen it before. It was a very fair-skinned face.
"Hello."
Louis followed the answer template, giving a response in a serious, old-fashioned manner.
"Excuse me, who are you?"
The fair-skinned boy smiled and said, "The one I added as a friend today."
“Oh,” Louis recalled, “they’re in Iceland, aren’t they?”
Anyone would feel ashamed to have their WeChat name read out like that. The other person paused for a moment, then nodded, still smiling, and said, "Li Bing, just call me Bingbing."
Louis replied naturally, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Bingbing."
Just then, his phone rang. It was another message from a talkative girl on WeChat that afternoon. Louis looked down and replied.
Li Bing leaned closer, and Louis's camouflage trouser legs came into view again: "So indifferent, brother."
Louis awkwardly stepped back a little, and before he could say anything, Rong Yuzhuo came over.
"go?"
Louis looked up, and Li Bing looked up as well. Their eyes were both fixed on Rong Yuzhuo's face. Li Bing seemed to know Rong Yuzhuo. He glanced at the other man, then at Louis, and suddenly said, "Don't blame me for being nosy, but let's find out so we don't waste our time. Are you two together?"
Louis nodded: "Yes, we live together."
Li Bing was shocked: "You've been together since high school?"
Louis shook his head: "We only met when school started."
Li Bing's mouth could fit a duck egg: "Faster than me?"
Louis felt that the other person seemed to have misunderstood something. One of them said "city gate tower" and the other said "hip bone elbow," and coincidentally, they matched up.
"No, no." Gu You'er suddenly appeared, with her classmate by her side. She had originally intended to say hello as she passed by, but upon hearing this nonsensical statement, she quickly explained to her classmate, whose mind was not always clear.
"They are just roommates, they rent a place together, there's nothing more to it."
Li Bing looked around at everyone's faces with suspicion. Gu You'er suddenly noticed a gaze on her. She looked up and saw that it was Rong Yuzhuo, who hadn't said a word.
"No, it didn't mean anything else, did it..."
Gu You'er suddenly repeated uncertainly, looking at Louis who looked completely bewildered, then at Li Bing who looked suspicious, and then at Rong Yuzhuo who remained silent.
With his hands in his pockets and his arm around his friend, Gu You'er said, "Louis, my mom told me to hurry home to watch my new hamster perform its acrobatics. See you tomorrow."
After saying that, he disappeared in a flash.
Louis waved to the retreating figure, and Rong Yuzhu walked past Li Bing, bowing his head to ask, "Aren't you leaving yet?"
Louis still didn't quite understand what had happened, and once he thought about going to buy kitchenware, he forgot all about Li Bing.
"Let's go! Why aren't we going? Let's go, let's go!"
The two figures disappeared into a sea of camouflage. Li Bing stood there for a while, chuckled, and then turned and walked away.
