Chapter 30: Doing Business (Part )

Last time we talked about Master Zhengyuan starting to teach Li Yi the Vajra Power. Let’s see if Li Yi can learn it.

Master Zhengyuan explained to Li Yi the basic theory of Vajra Magic Power: "Xiuyuan, the source of Vajra Magic Power comes from the Diamond Sutra."

Li Yi thought: "Diamond Sutra?" I'm very familiar with this. I used to have a copy in my wallet. My mother insisted that I carry it with me, so I had no choice but to put it in my wallet. I can recite this!

Zheng Yuan saw what Li Yi was thinking and said with a smile: "Although the Diamond Sutra is a very common scripture, there are only a few people who can understand the Buddhist teachings in it. Look at this martial arts field, there are only three monks who have mastered the Vajra Divine Art."

Li Yi suddenly realized that Du Ming was specially called by Zheng Yuan to deceive him that day! He looked at Zheng Yuan with contempt and said, "Old monk, you actually lied to me?"

Zhengyuan looked puzzled and asked, "When did the old monk lie to you?"

"That day, I came to Xishan Temple with my two brothers. You called Duming over and asked him how long he had been in the temple. You were just trying to trick me into falling for you!"

Zhengyuan smiled and said, "Xiuyuan, I, the old monk, never said that the Vajra Magic Skill is easy to learn! I have six disciples, but only Jiyun has mastered the essentials of the Vajra Magic Skill!"

"What about Du Ming?"

Jiyun smiled and said, "Uncle Master, I met Du Ming by chance when I was practicing in the mountains. At that time, he was being chased by a group of mountain bandits. I rescued him and took him to the police to avenge his crime. Later, by chance, he insisted on becoming my disciple. Normally, I should not have accepted any disciples, but Master saw that he had the potential to understand, so he kept him and made him my disciple."

Li Yi asked Zheng Yuan, "Can the old monk tell that he is suitable for practicing the Vajra Divine Art? Then come and see me, am I suitable?"

Zhengyuan smiled and said, "Didn't the old monk tell you the first time he saw you that you have a connection with Buddha and your enlightenment is extremely high, even higher than the old monk's? As long as you cultivate your connection and devote yourself to practicing Buddhism, your achievements in the future will definitely be higher than the old monk's!"

Li Yi pointed at Jiyun and asked, "What about him?"

"Jiyun's talent and understanding are similar to mine back then. If there were no other opportunities, I think he would be like the old monk."

Li Yi laughed and said, "The old monk is lying to me again! Okay, let's get down to business. What kind of person is suitable for practicing the Vajra Divine Art?"

"A person with a pure nature and a heart for good."

Li Yi was about to curse, but Zheng Yuan held his hand back and continued, "The most important thing is the understanding of Buddhism. The understanding of the Diamond Sutra!"

Li Yi started to curse, "Old monk, you are just talking nonsense!"

Jiyun came to the rescue and said, "Uncle Junior, you misunderstood Master. This is what Master told me when I was a child."

Li Yi asked, "Stop talking nonsense! How could I not know what the Diamond Sutra talks about?

There is no self, no person, no living being, no life. One should not dwell on form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma, but should cultivate a mind that does not dwell on anything.

All appearances are false. If you see that all appearances are not appearances, you will see the Tathagata. All conditioned phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows, like dew and lightning. You should view them in this way.

Isn't the core to be mindful, to be free from all forms, and to have no attachment? Isn't it teaching people that only by seeing through all illusions, discarding all distractions, doing good deeds and saving others can they realize the supreme Buddha Dharma?"

As soon as Li Yi finished speaking, a beam of Buddha light shot out from the main hall and shone on Li Yi. His whole body turned golden, and then the golden color slowly seeped into his skin. All the monks in the martial arts field were shocked.

Zheng Yuan was surprised and asked, "Xiu Yuan, what did you just say? Where in the Diamond Sutra does it talk about these things?"

Li Yi realized that the Diamond Sutra he had mastered seemed to be very different from the one here, so he said, "Old monk, bring your Diamond Sutra to me!"

Zhengyuan ordered someone to go to the Sutra Repository and bring the Diamond Sutra written by the abbot of the temple, Xiaoshi Luohan, which was enshrined in the temple. Zhengyuan picked up the sutra with both hands and handed it to Li Yi, who took the sutra and began to read it.

Sure enough, the Diamond Sutra in this world is completely different from what Li Yi is familiar with. It talks about the practice of Vajra, and is more like a martial arts secret book. It first talks about the origin of Vajra Magic, which is a method developed by Guangsheng Bodhisattva based on the Dharma image of Acala that he has mastered. Then it talks about the practice of Vajra Magic, which must have a good heart and concentration. Then it talks about various methods of practice, such as hitting the head with a brick, chopping yourself with a knife...

Li Yi was so frustrated that his forehead was full of black lines until he saw the last sentence in the book: Those who can understand the true meaning of Buddha Tathagata and see this sutra as seeing the Dharma image of Acalanatha do not need the above-mentioned method. They can obtain the supreme Vajra power by practicing with their own artistic conception.

At the end of the sutra was a transliterated Sanskrit passage, which was supposed to be a mantra, but Li Yi could not understand it, but he memorized it. For a person who was familiar with Confucianism and Taoism, memorizing some scriptures was not a difficult task. Li Yi read it once and memorized the contents of the Diamond Sutra. Although it was not exactly the same, it was almost the same.

Li Yi closed the sutra and handed it back to Zheng Yuan with both hands. Zheng Yuan took the sutra and ordered someone to send it back to the Sutra Library. Then he said, "Xiu Yuan, where in the Diamond Sutra do you see what you just said?" Li Yi shook his head and said, "I remembered it wrongly. What I just said was the Diamond Sutra, not this Diamond Sutra. I got it mixed up."

Zhengyuan asked, "Oh, so that's how it is. Xiuyuan, are you willing to tell me about the Diamond Sutra you just mentioned? I have never heard of this sutra. I guess it must be another strange sutra that you found somewhere."

Li Yi said pretentiously, "That won't do. The scripture I read tells about the ultimate way to practice Buddhism. Today, the core nine words have been revealed. You already know a lot. If you want to obtain the true scripture, you need other opportunities! Okay, let's stop here today. I didn't sleep well last night, so I need to catch up on my sleep. Jiyun, where should I stay?"

Jiyun took Li Yi to his residence, a small Zen room. To be honest, it was really simple. There was nothing inside except a bed, a table and two chairs. Li Yi asked Jiyun: "Don't you need to practice? Go and practice! I'm going to sleep, don't disturb me!"

Jiyun left immediately.

Li Yi sat cross-legged on the bed and recited the Sanskrit mantra he had just memorized from the Diamond Sutra.

Just after he finished reading, he suddenly felt that everything around him turned into nothingness, and he came to a golden world. Opposite him was a person who was also meditating. He could not see his face clearly because it seemed blurry and kept changing. But just like people cannot see other people's faces in dreams but can clearly know who they are, Li Yi knew that the person sitting opposite him was Bodhisattva Guangsheng.

Li Yi was extremely surprised and bowed to the Buddha: "Guangsheng Bodhisattva? Why are you here? Why am I here? Where is this?" Guangsheng Bodhisattva did not speak, but Li Yi could hear his voice. He could not tell whether it was a man or a woman, but it was a very pleasant voice. "Li Yi, Li Xiuyuan, we finally meet. This is the altar of the Acala Dharmakaya." "Bodhisattva recognizes me?"

"Of course I recognize you. I've heard you sing Buddhist songs before. They sound very nice, but they're not complete enough to help me understand the true Dharma. I can only understand that it's a scripture that can help people get rid of suffering and eliminate troubles. What's the name of that scripture?"

"The Great Compassion Mantra" "Oh, it turns out to be the Great Compassion Mantra. No wonder Brother Guanyin is so interested in it. The great wish he made is to save the world from the boundless sea of suffering."

"I would like to ask the Bodhisattva, if I hand over this scripture, can you teach me the Vajra Divine Art?"

"I'm not here to negotiate business with you! As long as you are willing to convert to Buddhism, the Vajra Divine Art will naturally be passed on to you."

"Then what are you doing here? What is the Lingtai?"

"You can think of Lingtai as an illusory world created by spiritual power. That Vajra Mantra is the mantra that interacts with the power of the Acala Dharmakaya."

"Telekinesis interaction is communication, right?"

"Yes and no. It's not just words that are being exchanged, but also mental energy."

"Mental strength?"

"Why, you don't understand? You don't think that Buddhism is a unique existence, do you? Buddhism is realized by consuming mental energy to invoke the laws of nature. The profundity of Buddhism lies in whether it can invoke more natural laws with less mental energy."

Hearing this, Li Yi thought to himself: So, Buddhism and Taoism are similar, both use self-cultivation to comprehend the laws of nature. Confucianism is just the opposite, knowledge changes destiny, and speaking the law is to use the righteousness to change the laws of nature. Interesting, this world is really interesting.

Li Yi asked: "Why did the Bodhisattva come here to see me?"

Bodhisattva Guangsheng smiled and said, "The Buddha told me that you have a great connection with our Buddhist sect and that you will be able to help the Buddhist sect avoid a disaster in the future. He asked me to establish a good relationship with you."

"The calamity of the end of the dharma?" Bodhisattva Guangsheng said with a smile, "I didn't expect you to know about the calamity of the end of the dharma. Even many arhats don't know about this. Li Yi, you are indeed a strange person."

"I'm just guessing. It seems that in the conversation between the Buddha and Mara, it was mentioned that in the Dharma Ending Age, Mara would ask his disciples to infiltrate Buddhism, destroy Buddhism, break the precepts, distort the meaning of the scriptures, and turn Buddhism into his territory."

Bodhisattva Guangsheng nodded and said, "It is true, but the Dharma Ending Age will not come until a thousand years later. I think the catastrophe that the Buddha mentioned is not this."

Li Yi suddenly asked: "Oh, if it's not the end of the law, then I don't know what it is."

"Everything has its own destiny. Li Yi, remember that today, our Buddhist sect has done you a favor. If the Buddhist sect is in trouble in the future, I hope you will help us. Amitabha!"

After chanting the Buddha's name, Guangsheng Bodhisattva disappeared. Li Yi sat there in a daze, thinking: You have done me a favor today? What favor did you give me? You didn't teach me the Vajra Divine Art! "Hey! Guangsheng Bodhisattva! Bodhisattva, where did the favor come from? What kind of favor?" There was no response in the empty golden space.

Li Yi stood up helplessly and said to himself: "It seems that what the Bodhisattva said is about the future. I came here today to establish cause and effect. I will not think about it for the time being. Please, let's take a look at what this Lingtai is."

So Li Yi started meditating again, trying to empty his mind and see if he could enter a state of concentration. Concentration is one of the Buddhist methods. In his previous life, Li Yi had never been able to enter a state of concentration because there were too many temptations in the world. But this time, Li Yi tried to enter a state of concentration and achieved unexpected results.

When Li Yi cleared all distracting thoughts and only thought about the image of Acalanatha, the golden world around him expanded rapidly, and a image appeared in front of Li Yi.

It was the image of Acala, a thousand feet tall, sitting cross-legged in this golden world, his body dark blue, his muscles strong, holding a sword in his right hand and a rope in his left. There was a fang on each of his upper and lower jaws, one on each side, and his nose was shaped like a cow. He looked up and down, his eyebrows erect, his face full of anger and ferocity, his hair curly, tied into a seven-strand bun, and behind him there was no backlight, but a blazing fire in the shape of a fire ring.

Li Yi opened his eyes and looked at the image of Acala, bowed and said, "I am Li Yi, and I am honored to meet the Bodhisattva Acala."

"You are not a Buddhist, how can you get here, and how do you know my true identity?"

"Li Yi received the sutra from Master Zhengyuan, received the cause and effect from Bodhisattva Guangsheng, and was told by the Buddha that he had a great connection with Buddhism. Therefore, he came here and saw the Bodhisattva Acalanatha."

"Good, what brings you here?"

"Vajra Divine Art!"

"The Vajra Divine Art is not passed on to outsiders. Wait until you become a monk and convert to Buddhism, then come back to find the deity, and then I will naturally pass it on to you!"

"Acalanatha Bodhisattva, can we have a negotiation…" Before Li Yi could finish his words, the image of Acalanatha disappeared, and the golden illusion around it gradually dissipated, returning to the appearance of a small meditation room.

Li Yi cursed in his heart: Are all the Buddhists so arrogant? They don't even let me finish my words! They don't even talk about business! How abominable! My scriptures are real! They are not fake! Oh! I have goods but can't sell them, what should I do? No, I have to think of other ways. Just now, Bodhisattva Guangsheng said that Bodhisattva Guanzizai seems to be very interested in the Great Compassion Mantra. Why not try my luck?

Thinking of this, Li Yi came to the main hall without paying attention to other pilgrims. He knelt down in front of the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, put his hands together, and said in his heart: Great and merciful Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, can you hear my voice? I, Li Yi, pray to you sincerely, hoping to hear you talk about Buddhism. Then Li Yi looked up at the statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and heard a voice echoing in his heart.

"Li Yi, don't waste your time. I don't have what you want here! I don't know the Vajra Divine Art. Even if I have it, I won't teach you. I won't help you to ask Brother Guangxian for mercy. All causes and effects are determined by heaven and cannot be forced."

"No! Isn't your great wish, Bodhisattva, to save all sentient beings from the sea of suffering? Li Yi is currently sinking in this sea of suffering. Please have mercy on me and save Li Yi as well!"

Li Yi suddenly heard a laugh in his heart, and then the voice of Guanyin Bodhisattva sounded again: "Li Yi, others don't know the purpose of your learning the Vajra Divine Art, but I know that the method of his telepathy is passed down from the Dharma of Great Compassion and Cause and Effect that I have mastered. I can't hear the voices of Confucianists and Taoists above the third rank, but I still know yours!"

Li Yi was about to say "Fuck it", but then he realized that the Bodhisattva knew everything he was thinking, so he immediately put away his evil power and focused on talking to the Bodhisattva. "Bodhisattva, don't you want the Great Compassion Mantra or its original text?"

"Monks don't lie. I naturally want it, but everything has its own destiny. I won't force you. When you are truly willing to donate the scriptures, I will know it. So you don't have to think about doing business with me! Monks are empty and have nothing. There is nothing I can exchange with you."

Li Yi knew that the Bodhisattva was about to leave, so he thought to himself, "Bodhisattva, you should know now that Li Yi sincerely wants to present the Great Compassion Mantra to you." "Yes, it is indeed sincere. I wonder why you suddenly changed your mind?"

Li Yi did not answer, but recited the source of the Great Compassion Mantra, the Thousand-armed Thousand-eyed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva's Great and Complete Unhindered Great Compassion Mantra, in his mind, beating the wooden fish as he recited. At this time, a golden light gradually lit up in Li Yi's inner world, and Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva listened to the scriptures and felt the Buddhist teachings...
