My Little Pony: Another World Adventure
Chapter 2 A Wonderful Experience in the Wand Shop
Diagon Alley was busy and crowded. A winding, endless cobblestone street connected the shops on both sides. All kinds of hats floated past Latan's chest like jellyfish chasing the waves.
It was a sunny day, which was extremely rare for London. The dazzling sunlight poured down through the gaps between the buildings, baking the earth warmly and making Latan's pale skin turn a burning red.
After eleven years in the dungeon, this was the first time Latan was exposed to sunlight.
There were many crucibles stacked in front of a store. The sunlight refracted and bounced on their smooth surface, making it impossible for the half-blood giant to open his eyes.
Professor McGonagall held Latan's index finger tightly, and as she squeezed forward into the noisy crowd, she raised her voice and introduced: "This is the Crucible Shop, you need to buy one. Opposite is the pharmacy, where you can buy the materials needed for the Potions class. In front is Eeyore Owl Shop, where Hogwarts students can bring an owl, a cat, or a toad. I recommend an owl, because with it you can place orders with the shops in Diagon Alley through letters."
"But professor." Latan covered his eyes, which were not used to the strong light, with his hands and looked at the road through his fingers. "I don't have any money."
"Oh, don't worry about that." Professor McGonagall touched the leather bag full of coins in her robe and said lightly, "Hogwarts has set up a subsidy for foreign students. Let's go to Gringotts and withdraw the money now."
"professor."
Ratan stopped dead in his tracks, causing Professor McGonagall to stagger. "Please tell me the truth," he said. "Did Gregorovitch give you the money?"
Professor McGonagall raised her head and pursed her lips out of habit. A trace of helplessness appeared on her serious face: "Mr. Magnus, the relationship between you and your grandfather really makes me..."
"Lies only beget more lies." Latan lowered his hands to block the sun, his thick eyebrows knitted tightly together, "Since the old fascist gave you the money, I hope you can keep it for me. When I come of age and can earn compensation for my work, I will return all the money to him."
And the insults and imprisonment he inflicted on me over the years...
Latan added in his mind.
Professor McGonagall breathed a sigh of relief and smiled, "You are a good child. Don't worry, I will keep it carefully. Now... do you see that building made of white marble? The one with two goblins standing at the door. Yes, this is Gringotts."
Latan followed Professor McGonagall up the magnificent gentle steps of Gringotts, and two goblins in scarlet and gold uniforms opened the bronze door for them and walked into the inner hall. Then, a second silver door appeared in front of Latan, and on the door panel there were poems written by goblins warning thieves.
"Except for Hogwarts, Gringotts is the safest place in the whole of Britain, although its vault was breached once last year." Professor McGonagall said, and the two goblin employees with heads as ugly as potatoes gave her dissatisfied looks.
"I've read about the history of Gringotts."
Ratan entered the marble hall, surrounded by hundreds of goblins sitting on high stools behind a long row of counters, some examining gems with eyepieces, others weighing coins on scales, and scribbling accounts in huge ledgers.
He lowered his voice (although still loud) to Professor McGonagall and said, "In 1865, the Ministry of Magic agreed to allow goblins to take full control of Gringotts in the UK. Don't British wizards worry that their property will be taken away by these things..."
"Shut up!" Professor McGonagall sternly stopped Ratan. "This is a topic that cannot be touched, Mr. Magnus. You will understand when you study History of Magic."
Under the vicious gazes of the surrounding goblins, Latan covered his right eye, which was beginning to sting, expressionlessly and nodded solemnly: "I understand, Professor."
How dare you look at me like that! These lowly creatures must want to kill me! The book says that goblins are greedy and disgusting creatures. They once helped the Third Reich massacre German wizards! When I become powerful, I will kill all these greedy and lowly creatures! Cleanse! Massacre! Exterminate!
Professor McGonagall gave the goblin behind the counter an apologetic smile and placed Gregorovitch's leather bag on the counter. There was a heavy clatter of coins, and the goblin's eyes lit up.
"Please help me change this money into Galleons."
Professor McGonagall's words instantly wiped out the light in the goblin's eyes. He had hoped that the witch in front of him would come to deposit money to add to the already strong foundation of Gringotts. Now he could only angrily untie the drawstring with his long fingers and pour all the coins in the cowhide bag onto the counter.
The gold coins immediately covered the entire counter, and the brilliant golden light was even brighter than the chandelier in the hall. Not only did it make all the wizards and goblins around turn their heads to look, but it also made Latan frown.
That old guy actually gave me so much money...
What is this feeling? Is it happiness? Or gloom? Or gratitude? I don’t understand… The book doesn’t tell me how to distinguish…
As soon as the gold coins came out, the goblin's eyes behind the counter immediately became respectful. He rang the bell to summon two younger goblins, and quickly counted the total amount of the property while waving his long fingers.
"It's in German Platinum, ma'am." The goblin teller rubbed his hands mercilessly and said to Professor McGonagall, "The current exchange rate between Platinum and Galleon is 1:0.95. Do you want to convert all of it into Galleons?"
"No," said Professor McGonagall flatly. "Give me 500 Galleons in cash. As for the rest of the money, open a private account for Mr. Magnus," she dragged Latan to the counter, "and open a private account for him. Latan, hold out your hand."
Latan suppressed his hostility towards the goblins and placed his palm on the counter, allowing the teller to caress it.
As soon as the goblin teller's fingers touched Latarn's skin, he muttered in disgust: "Half-blood giant..."
The stinging sensation in Latan's right eye grew more intense.
"Ma'am, this... hum... this child." The goblin snorted contemptuously, "His bone age shows that he is not yet an adult. Only with the consent of his family can Gringotts open an account for him."
"What do you think I'm doing here? In the name of the Deputy Headmaster of Hogwarts, I guarantee the account of Latarn Magnus. I will supervise the flow of funds in this account in the name of guardian. And!"
Professor McGonagall shot a sharp look from behind her glasses: "I warn you, if you dare to speak to my students in this tone again, you will have to pack up and leave Gringotts tomorrow, I say!"
Latan stared blankly at Professor McGonagall's pointed hat. Although he couldn't see her expression, he was now certain that the emotion that was surging in his heart at that moment was definitely the "gratitude" described in the book.
The goblin teller was so frightened that she trembled all over and almost fell off the high stool. She quickly said, "Yes, ma'am, I'll handle the business for you right away, ma'am!"
He deftly counted out 500 gold Galleons, put the remaining German Platinum francs into a small cart marked "Savings", and used red ink to make a rubbing of Latan's palm print. He then handed two small iron keys and the passbook to Professor McGonagall.
Professor McGonagall stuffed one of the keys into Ratan's palm, swept 500 gold Galleons into the cowhide bag, pointed to the remaining German Galleons on the counter, and said sternly to the goblin teller: "Keep this money safe. I will come to check whether your security facilities are complete from time to time and report to Professor Dumbledore."
"Don't worry, ma'am." The goblin showed a flattering and ugly smile, and his big black eyes blinked continuously. "We will never let Professor Dumbledore down."
Leaving Gringotts and returning to the bright sunshine, Latan slowly followed Professor McGonagall's brisk pace and said softly, "Thank you, Professor..."
Make my right eye stop hurting.
"One of the duties of a professor is to protect students." Professor McGonagall was in a very good mood after giving the goblin a warning. "Let me see, Madam Malkin's robe shop... this way."
Along the way, Ratan passed by a flying broom shop and heard several boys arguing over the performance of the Nimbus 2000 and 2001 brooms in front of the window. There was also the Fosco Ice Cream Shop with a parasol set up outside the door, where wizards enjoyed the sweet delicacies to relieve the summer heat. There was also the Flourish and Blotts Bookstore -
Looking at the crowds that crowded the bookstore, Latan remembered the list of books he needed to buy in his admission letter:
The Break with the Ghost, by Gilderoy Lockhart
Running with Ghouls, by Gilderoy Lockhart
Holidays with a Hag, by Gilderoy Lockhart
……
There are seven books in total, all written by a man called Gilderoy Lockhart. Judging from the names, they don't seem to be textbooks needed for school classes. Instead, they look more like the by-products of some idol.
"Professor McGonagall," LaTane asked, "Who is Gilderoy Lockhart?"
"He, he is..." Professor McGonagall seemed to have suddenly developed lockjaw. Her expression was quite unnatural, and she squeezed out the words from between her clenched teeth. "He is a best-selling author and also your Defense Against the Dark Arts professor this year."
"This year?"
Latan was puzzled, expressionless, and asked, "What happened to the professor who taught this course last year?"
"He was permanently dismissed from Hogwarts due to misconduct." Professor McGonagall said briefly, stopping in front of a shop built of birch wood. "Here we are, right here."
Compared to the tall doorway of the robe shop (Latan didn't even need to lower his head to enter), Madam Malkin was short and plump, with a round red face that always had a sincere smile, which made people feel good about her.
"Are you here to order a custom gown, dear?" Madam Malkin said without Ratan having to ask, "We have many styles here. Take your time to choose a fabric that is comfortable for you."
"Save your enthusiasm for adult wizards, Malkin. He's only a first year and all he needs is a school uniform." Professor McGonagall interrupted Madam Malkin's sales pitch.
"First grade?!" Madam Malkin shouted in surprise, looking up and down at Latan's sturdy body like a horse. "My dear, isn't it possible that your mother secretes bone spirits instead of milk?"
Trying to get used to communicating with people, Latan forced out his signature stiff and scary smile and said in a low voice, "It wasn't until this morning that I saw my mother for the second time."
This sentence immediately silenced the talkative Madam Malkin.
She looked at Professor McGonagall worriedly, then led Latan to the round table in the middle of the shop. She used an automatic magic measuring tape to measure the height and shoulder width of the half-blood giant, and said apologetically, "I'm sorry, dear, I didn't know..."
Still feeling discouraged that he couldn't communicate with others as skillfully as Professor McGonagall, Latan casually said, "It doesn't matter. I haven't seen my father since I was born."
Madam Malkin wished she could sew her mouth shut with the sewing needle in her hand.
After silently measuring Latan's height (252 feet inches, centimeters), shoulder width, chest circumference, waist circumference, arm and leg length, and foot size, Madam Malkin sewed three plain black robes, three winter fur robes, three white shirts, three ties, three pairs of black trousers, and underwear, socks, gloves and other things on the spot.
As school uniforms, the cuffs and collars of these robes and shirts are enchanted with color-changing magic, which can change the patterns and colors according to the house that Latan joins at Hogwarts.
