The eighth day of the twelfth lunar month is Laba Festival.

The most common thing heard during Laba Festival is drinking Laba porridge.

On the evening of the seventh day of the twelfth lunar month, before the shop closed, Xu Si and his colleagues began to get busy.

Prepare kidney beans, mung beans, red beans, coix seeds, glutinous rice, black rice, peanuts, lilies, lotus seeds, and red dates in advance, wash them clean, peel those that need to be peeled, remove the cores if necessary, and soak them in clean water after careful selection.

Early the next morning, put it in the pot and cook it over low heat.

Many people think that Laba porridge is just eight-treasure porridge, but in fact, it can have more than eight ingredients. In addition to these, you can also add walnuts, chestnuts, almonds, pine nuts, longan, hazelnuts, raisins, roses, etc. according to personal preference.

Some places will add tofu, meat, vegetables, fruits and other special ingredients.

While chopping vegetables, Lou Yuexin told everyone what she had seen and heard when she visited a temple on Laba Festival. "I went to Dinghui Temple outside the capital before. They would use Laba porridge to offer to Buddha on this day, and also give it to disciples and believers."

It is said that the amulets obtained from Dinghui Temple are very effective. She went there to obtain it for Shen Anyi who was away from home.

Qi Ning sat beside Qing Huan, watching over the casserole with her. With the aroma of the medicine, he looked forward to the other food even more. He asked curiously, "Is the Laba porridge they made delicious?"

"The taste is just so-so, but it's very particular. They put fruit lions in the Laba porridge, and there are also cakes made in the shape of immortals and old birthday stars."

"What is a fruit lion?" Qi Ning's eyes were full of questions.

Others had never heard of this and were confused.

"Well, I heard from monks that it is a lion-shaped object made of several kinds of fruits. Walnut kernels are the lion's head, roasted dates with the pits removed are the lion's body, peach kernels are the lion's feet, and sweet almonds are the lion's tail." Lou Yuexin tried hard to recall. After such a long time, the only reason she could still remember it was because she was greedy at the time. She chose the bowl with four little lions and tasted it slowly. There was nothing special about it, but she ate it all up in order not to waste it. She had eaten enough.

"Will Second Aunt do it?"

In Qi Ning's eyes, his second aunt knows everything.

Xu Si shook his head, "No."

She had never seen it before, and this was the first time she heard of it. Ordinary people basically didn't do this, and she hadn't been to a temple very often. She didn't know if people still did this now.

Qi Ning felt a little sorry, but he quickly adjusted his mentality and comforted Xu Si, "Second aunt is amazing. She can make some things that even temples can't make."

He was not talking nonsense. The meat dishes made by his second aunt were not something that temples would make and could not make.

Xu Si laughed and said, "I don't have enough time to make cakes for the old birthday star, but I can make you a sculpture of the old birthday star. Do you want to do it?"

“Yes, yes,” Qi Ning nodded vigorously and ran to her side.

Xu Si looked at the ingredients and chose a carrot.

Cut off the bottom and a part of the head, then pick up a small sharp knife and start working.

Soon, the general shape of the old man could be seen.

Next came the head and body, holding a longevity peach and a walking stick and smiling happily.

When put down, the old man could still stand steadily on the table.

"Wow," Qi Ning leaned over the table, staring intently with his mouth slightly open.

Others were amazed at this, "Asi has great skills."

"Oh, I haven't carved for a long time, I'm a little rusty."

"Master Xu, can I learn this?" An Yu found it magical and admired Xu Si even more.

"Sure, I'll teach you when I have time. You can put it in the dishes then. Sometimes cakes also need such carvings." Xu Si agreed readily.

In some big restaurants, an ordinary dish becomes twice as valuable just because of the addition of carvings.

She can use this idea in the future, but she can choose some delicious ingredients, such as pumpkin, cucumber, etc., which taste good and are better than eating raw carrots.

After Xu Si and the other man finished their medicines and calmed down for a while, the Laba porridge was ready.

When the lid was opened, there was a faint sweet smell in the hot steam. Xu Si scooped up some porridge with a spoon. When the crimson porridge fell back into the pot, the taste was even richer.

The glutinous rice, coix seed and black rice were all cooked until they were blooming, the peanuts and red beans were plump, and the red dates were shiny.

Put the brown sugar cubes in and wait for a few minutes for them to melt. Stir it and the brown sugar threads will spread out, making the color of the Laba porridge even more rosy and crystal clear.

Looking at the sun, Xu Si scooped out some, packed it into several food boxes, and went with Shen Yanchen to deliver them to people they knew.

Leaving the food for themselves, Su Jinyue carried the rest to the gate of the county town, where there was a porridge stall set up by the county government's runners for some wealthy families to provide porridge to the poor.

No matter it is sincere or just a show, it always does some good and brings some warmth to people in this cold day.

Shen Jingchuan naturally accompanied him. Fearing that the porridge would get cold, the two of them left in a hurry.

Compared with the big bucket of porridge that others had, their portable wooden bucket seemed a bit shabby.

But when it was opened, the thick Laba porridge inside was revealed, exuding a faint sweetness and still steaming. Compared with the porridge that was a bit thin and not cooked enough at other people's places, it was far better than others.

Someone recognized their clothes, pointed at them and shouted, "They are from a restaurant."

The smart people immediately ran to them and lined up, bowls in their hands.

Su Jinyue scooped a spoonful for everyone, regardless of the size of the bowl. Fortunately, no one was dissatisfied and they all thanked her.

Just this one spoonful, if you add some water, will make the porridge thicker and more filling than other places.

The first person who got the porridge couldn't wait to take a sip and said with emotion, "It's worthy of being a restaurant. The porridge they make is so delicious."

Although he didn't go to eat, he went to have a bowl of soup.

The guy saw him but didn't chase him away. He was really kind-hearted.

"Sweet! There's actually sugar in it!" someone exclaimed.

Upon hearing this, the people in the queue stretched their heads forward anxiously. The wooden barrel was not big, and they were afraid that there would be no more left when it was their turn.

"It's delicious," an old man in ragged clothes held a bowl with several holes in it, tears in his eyes. It was worth it for him to have the chance to drink such a bowl of porridge in his life. The ingredients were cooked so soft that he didn't even need to bite them.

Some people were queuing in front of other stalls, hesitating whether to change seats, when Su Jinyue had already finished the last spoonful of porridge.

He apologized to the people behind him, "Sorry, we're out of porridge. Let's go get some porridge somewhere else."

At this point, everyone had no choice but to leave with regret and join other teams.
