Chapter 14: Boggart's Mirror
Time soon came to Thursday, today there was a Potions class taught by Snape and a Defense Against the Dark Arts class taught by his mortal enemy Lupin. This time Malfoy was not injured, everyone was brewing potions step by step according to the professor's steps, no one found fault, only Snape lazily ordered Winston to patrol the classroom with him, in case another idiot exploded the crucible when he was not paying attention.
As he said this, Snape glared at Longbottom who was boiling medicine.
Neville was frightened and shuddered, as if he accidentally poured all the leech juice in his hand. Winster, who was standing on the other side of the classroom and checking with the teacher, watched Neville, who was in the area patrolled by Snape, trying to remedy the situation in a panic, adding a lot of clean water and materials of the same proportion, trying to dilute the leech juice that had been poured in - but Winster saw that he added more than one mouse spleen.
Worse.
Neville's cauldron had turned into a bright orange color, which frightened him even more. Especially since Snape obviously had not forgotten to focus on this position - Snape had already seen the ominous color of the crucible, and strode to Neville's cauldron with a gloomy face.
"Orange, Longbottom," Snape scooped up some with a spoon and slowly poured it back into the crucible so that everyone could see it. "Orange." Snape's voice rang out coldly in the classroom.
"Haven't I made it clear enough? All it takes is a rat's spleen. Haven't I repeatedly stressed to you fools that a little leech juice is all it takes? How can I make you fools understand, Longbottom?"
Neville's eyes turned red from being scolded, and he was shaking all over, and he was about to cry.
"Please, sir," Hermione begged at this time, "I can help Neville change -"
Snape's expression became noticeably more gloomy. "I don't think I asked you to show off, Miss Granger," he said coldly. "You are not allowed to help him, Granger. Before the get out of class is over, I'm going to take Longbottom's potion to see what it is like, and then give it to--" Snape paused, his eyes scanning the toad in Neville's pocket. "Then feed your toad a few drops of your potion. Maybe this will encourage you to remember what I said, Longbottom." He said the last sentence while staring at Neville.
After a while, Snape walked away, and Winster naturally walked to the Gryffindor side. Harry was chatting with Seamus and the others, and Malfoy also leaned over to say something. Winster walked over and stood between the two of them, clearing his cough to remind them to shut up, and by the way interrupted Hermione's action of leaning over to help Neville.
Winster clearly saw that Professor Snape, who was sitting on it, showed a slightly satisfied expression - it was obvious that Snape had been paying attention to this side.
Winster walked past Neville, "Pour out the excess," he looked calmly at Snape who turned away from the podium, and turned sideways to Hermione who was brewing a potion, as if looking at her. His lips slightly moved: "Take out the spleen that has not yet melted, and fill your pint of water -"
Neville glanced fearfully at Snape who was walking towards Crabbe, and quickly did as he said.
Then Winster walked quickly to a Gryffindor with light brown hair: "Seamus Finnigan! Don't poke your wand into the crucible too hard--" Snape glanced over, saw that there was no explosion, and turned back to look at Crabbe and Goyle, who were clumsily throwing rat spleens into the crucible, and the spleens splashed a string of hot, strangely colored potion droplets in the crucible.
Snape's expression became even more unpredictable.
The whole classroom was filled with operations that made the potion master suffocate - it was too miserable. Winster couldn't help but shed a tear of sympathy for his teacher in his heart.
Before the get out of class ended, Snape sneered and gathered all the students together. He grabbed Neville's toad, Leff, with one hand, and scooped some from Neville's cauldron with a small spoon in the other hand, and poured a few drops into Leff's throat accurately. At this time, Neville's potion had turned turquoise, close to the perfect bright green.
"Let's see what becomes of Longbottom's toad," Snape drawled maliciously.
Students from both houses gathered in the classroom. Gryffindor students watched anxiously. Slytherins were all excited to see Neville's excitement. Winster saw Hermione's worried expression. When he looked over, Hermione shook her head slightly, indicating that she did not help Neville.
Then the teacher couldn't find a reason. Winster looked away and looked at Neville's toad in Snape's hand. The classroom was silent for a while, and only Leif opened his mouth and gasped, and then heard a puff, and turned into a tadpole swimming in Snape's palm.
The Gryffindor students cheered immediately. Snape looked very unhappy. He glared at Winston with his dark eyes and said, "You handle it, White." He slammed the classroom door.
"get out of class is over!" he said.
The classmates dispersed in twos and threes. Winster took out a small bottle from the other side of his robe and poured a few drops of liquid on Leif, who suddenly turned into a toad again.
Neville whispered, "Thank you, Winster." Winster nodded at him, left the classroom, and hurriedly followed Snape.
After lunch, Harry and Ron went to Professor Lupin's Defense Against the Dark Arts class. Hermione and Winston were already sitting there, along with a few Slytherins whom Harry had seen in the hospital wing. They looked very harmonious. Malfoy sat on the other side with his hands folded in disdain, not even looking in that direction, as if he looked down on this place.
Professor Lupin came in after Harry and the others arrived at the classroom, saying it was a practical class, and then took everyone to the staff room.
The staff room was a long room with wooden panels on the four walls and filled with all kinds of old chairs. There was only one professor in the room, resting or waiting.
Snape sat in a low armchair. As the students poured into the room, he turned his head, his eyes dark and almost shining, and a sarcastic sneer on his lips.
Snape said, "Leave the door open, Lupin. I have no interest in your lectures."
He stood up and strode past his classmates, his black robes fluttering behind him.
When he walked out of the door, he seemed to remember something, turned around, and his malicious eyes wandered among the group of Gryffindors, finally stopping at Neville: "Ah, maybe no one has reminded you yet, Lupin," he said slowly with a fake smile: "...There is a student in this class who really needs your attention--"
Winster quietly blocked his view of Neville, whistled and pretended that he had done nothing.
"What?" Lupin asked when he saw Snape suddenly stop talking and look livid.
Snape glared at his student fiercely: "...Nothing! There is just a student who always interrupts the teacher and tries to teach his teacher how to do things!" Snape said angrily in a low voice.
Lupin looked thoughtfully in the direction Snape was looking at. Winston was looking at the wardrobe with a nonchalant expression, as if the patterns on it were really about to bloom.
The door slammed shut.
"Okay." Lupin said, motioning the students to go to the other end of the room, where there was a wardrobe. As soon as they approached, the wardrobe banged against the wall. "Don't worry, kids, there's a Boggart in the wardrobe." Lupin said slowly.
"Who wants to try it first?" Lupin asked the students in a friendly manner after introducing the characteristics of Boggart.
Before Lupin looked at the frightened Neville, Winster stepped forward first: "I." He said. If Neville was called up again, Winster would have to face the angry Snape again after class.
"Come on, child," Lupin said with a smile, "first tell me what you are most afraid of?"
Winster was stunned for a moment. He had indeed not thought about this question. "... spiders, snakes, tigers, lions..." Winster read hesitantly, but it seemed that these were not the things he feared the most.
(Ron shuddered noticeably when Winston pronounced the word "spider")
Lupin interrupted him while he was reading out the names of the dishes: "Kid, I'm not asking you to read out the names, but to think of a symbol that you are most afraid of. It doesn't have to be a specific animal."
Winster paused, "Maybe..." He said undecidedly, "Maybe death?"
"Everyone should be afraid of death, right?" he said.
Lupin nodded helplessly, "Okay," and then Lupin asked Winster to imagine what death would symbolize to him and to make it funny.
"Clowns," Winster said after a moment's thought, "circus clowns are the funniest."
Winster had no idea what was so funny here, and first wanted to get the funniest clown in the West.
joker tells a joke.
——Cold joke haha
Lupin asked the other students to imagine how to make fear funny, then counted to three and opened the closet door.
A cute tawny owl staggered out of the closet, but just as it stepped through the closet door, it tripped and fell to the ground with a thud.
It's Summer, so cute.
Winster chuckled, and a few scattered laughs were heard behind him.
Bogut making a mistake is not something Winster fears.
The boggart seemed irritated by the laughter.
It began to transform crazily, sometimes appearing as a crucible that looked like it was about to explode, sometimes as a little boy reading a book, sometimes as several pieces of parchment with the word T written on them, sometimes as a triangular-headed python about to attack, and sometimes as a huge, piercing blue eye... Finally it stopped on a boy with black hair and blue eyes who looked somewhat familiar.
At first, Winster was confused and couldn't understand what the Boggart was doing. Was it because he had nothing to be afraid of or because he was afraid of too many things and couldn't find his mind?
At that moment, Winster suspected that the Boggart would show the scene that the protagonists in those novels who had a close relationship with Snape feared the most - Snape's dead body.
Ah, Winster thought, this can't be known to the teacher, how embarrassing! He might think his students would be afraid of a potion master being bitten to death by a snake. Winster smiled, the teacher probably didn't expect his students to love him so much. Winster thought a little mischievously, would the teacher feel shy? Like those novels where the tips of the ears turn red?
Winster couldn't help but want to see that scene.
This wasn't a prank on the teacher, and Winster didn't know what he was afraid of.
But as the Boggart began to maintain this image for a long time, Winster found that the person in front of him had a strange and unfamiliar look. He looked at him carefully - this boy had the same slightly long black hair as him, with the ends of the hair curved at the shoulders and neck, and the same blue eyes - but the boy's blue looked deeper, and there was a wound on the boy's forehead that looked like it was caused by a collision and was bleeding. He was wearing a looser Slytherin school robe -
The classroom was divided by a huge mirror, with a row of unknown letters engraved on it.
The students all held their breath and watched the strange scene in front of them.
Harry felt that the scene in front of him was a little familiar. He stared at the huge mirror and subconsciously read the sentence engraved on it: "What I show is not yours..."
[I show is not your death but your heart fear]
[What I show you is not your death, but the fear within you.]
The voice suddenly rang in Winster's ears - he recognized it... This was him, not the current Winster White, but the original owner's face in the memory where Selwyn appeared -
In the mirror, the Boggart who looked like Winster smiled frivolously and embraced his friends, Harry and Hermione, with an expression that was more unfamiliar and charming than Winster.
Loial, Jenny, Michael, and the seldom-appearing Coren all smiled and surrounded him without any abnormality... Then Severus Snape, who accepted Winster as his student, also appeared. His face was indifferent, but from Winster's point of view, he could even be said to be somewhat gentle as he stood behind "Winster", without the mask of smug arrogance... He put his hand on his shoulder and gave him strength... It was obviously the most desired beautiful scene in his heart, but it shocked Winster to the point of being in place like a nightmare -
He felt like he was in an icy cellar.
The first thing that appeared on "Winster's" face was the familiar confused expression of someone who had just woken up from "amnesia", and then just like what Winster showed later... it quickly switched to a matter-of-fact look, no one doubted him, no one knew him deeply... just like no one knew what he was thinking now... no one knew that he was beginning to fear that he would also lose his memory like the previous Winster and become a new and completely different Winster.
…and the others were oblivious to the obvious difference, as if what they cared about was not the memory of their acquaintance, but only this body.
"Winster" waved to everyone outside the mirror with a smile on his face, and then gave a friendly grin to the horrified Winster outside:
[Why so serious?]
Winster involuntarily took a step back.
"Do not."
"——No!" Winster quickly rejected it, and suddenly raised his wand and shouted: "Funny, funny, funny——"
At the moment of casting the spell, Winster even hoped that what shot out from his wand was not a funny spell that would make everything funny, but a spell that would completely destroy the mirror into pieces -
The mirror suddenly turned into an ordinary makeup mirror. A clown who was humming a little tune and twisting his hips to put on makeup seemed to realize that he had changed his place and turned his head with a frightened expression. He didn't expect so many people were watching him singing and twisting his hips while putting on makeup. He jumped back suddenly, and a clown nose fell off his face and rolled to the ground, revealing his nose with only two slits. It turned out that he didn't have a nose at all and couldn't wear it at all - Voldemort was putting clown makeup on his snake face while twisting his hips and singing, and he couldn't even put on a nose, hahahahahaha -
Winster bent down to cover his pale face and smiled with tears in his eyes.
The students behind him also started laughing - yes, it was so interesting to watch a clown with half-made-up and a butt shaking his head.
——No one could see Winster’s pale face.
"Well done, White. Who wants to be next?" Lupin praised Winster's response, and then called another student to come up. "Voldemort", who had his nose broken and was crying with his hands covering his face, pounced on the student again and turned into a mummy covered in bandages and blood.
"Funny, funny!" Parvati, who came up, shouted.
The mummy was tripped by his own loose bandages and fell to the ground with a thud. His head was swirling on the ground, and his hands were frantically groping around his neck, searching for his head.
The students started laughing again.
"Very good!" Lupin encouraged with a smile.
The students lined up and went up one by one.
Winster naturally stepped aside, a smile frozen on his face, watching the scene that everyone was most afraid of and then became funny, and laughing with every laugh.
No one is afraid of what he fears, just as no one cares about other people's fears.
"...Winster, can we talk for a while?"
Hermione looked at the smile that seemed to be engraved on Winston's face and chose her words.
"What are you talking about?" asked Winston.
"Thestrals."
