Chapter 102: Stannis's Provocation
Seeing that the atmosphere was not right because of his lord's words, Davos quickly stepped forward to smooth things over.
"Lord Commander, His Majesty Stannis means that your support is too little. In any case, a thousand men a month's supply is definitely not enough."
Seeing Davos come out to smooth things over, Melisandre also walked slowly towards Stannis. She waved her hand and extinguished the flames on the Sword of Light. At the same time, under her tender gaze, the anger in Stannis' heart was also extinguished.
"His Majesty."
Davos looked at Stannis with a meaningful look, and then guided him to look at the wildlings in the tent.
As a king and his subject who had lived together day and night for more than ten years, they could understand each other's meaning through their eyes even without saying a word.
Stannis looked at Olaf, then at the other wildlings in the camp, including the giant 'Strong Gemar' who had remained silent, and finally nodded imperceptibly.
With Stannis's permission, Davos waved his hand and ordered the knights of Dragonstone to sheath their swords. He continued to speak to Lyon:
"Commander-in-Chief, we have a suggestion. Since most of these barbarians have already crossed the Wall, it would be time-consuming and laborious to capture them all. Why don't you allow us to recruit soldiers from among the barbarians? Once Your Majesty regains the throne, you can put forward any conditions."
Faced with the blank check from Stannis, it is obvious that no child would make the wrong choice.
Just as Lyon was about to refuse, Davos quickly added:
"His Majesty has allowed the families of the wildlings who participated in the war to stay south of the Wall."
In Davos's opinion, the conditions he offered were not bad enough to violate the rule that wildlings could not go south.
"The newly added land is a gift from the Northern Guard to the Night's Watch. As the commander-in-chief of the Night's Watch, I should have the final say on how to deal with it, right?"
Davos' words did not impress Lyon at all. The latter was even bored to the point of dozing off with his chin propped up.
"If there is no king to endorse your actions, you will be spurned by every lord in the Seven Kingdoms. When the time comes, no one will be willing to support the Wall when it encounters a disaster, not to mention..."
Davos glanced at the White Walker Rhubarb beside Lyon. Even from a distance he could feel the cold aura emanating from Rhubarb all the time.
"What's more... winter is coming, and the entire North will face the threat of food shortage and the White Walkers."
After Davos finished speaking, Lyon listened for a while, and after making sure that he didn't say anything new, he gave his own answer.
"First of all, regarding your last point, it is true that winter is coming, but the Night King and I are good friends. We signed a truce agreement. At least, this treaty is still in effect while I am still the commander-in-chief."
"Secondly, regarding the food problem, I will arrange a fleet to purchase food from the free trade city-state on the other side of the Summer Sea. You don't have to worry about that."
Seeing that Davos still had something to say.
Even his powerful mouth cannon, Lyon, quickly waved his hand to stop him, and looked at Stannis and said:
"When Grand Maester Aemon sent out the ravens, I had no hope of aid from the kingdom, but I am grateful that you have come."
"But you should understand that I am not only the commander-in-chief of the Night's Watch, but also the leader of these 100,000 free people. They chose me as their new King Beyond the Wall, which means I must be responsible for every one of them."
"I have no current plans to send any of my freemen to participate in this civil strife in the kingdom."
"The Nightfort is still empty. You and your thousand cavalry can be stationed there. If you have any problems with food and fodder, you can always go to Jon Snow, my new chief steward."
"Also, Your Majesty Stannis, you don't have to fleece me. You can just make a statement. I believe there are many families in the North who do not obey Roose Bolton, the guardian of the North. Moreover, there are many mountain clans in the North who do not obey the king. You can go to these tribes to recruit mercenaries."
When Leon finished speaking these words in one breath.
Even Davos, the famous expert in talking nonsense in Westeros, didn't think there was anything wrong with it at first.
After all, Lyon was kind enough to provide the army with a place to station and food, and pointed out a clear way forward.
There was no point in forcing him to join the war.
But Stannis didn't think so. He always believed that Lyon didn't do enough for his cause of restoring his country.
And thought it was Lyon's contempt for himself.
So Stannis snorted coldly, and the anger in his heart was obviously showing signs of rekindling.
Fortunately, Melisandre in front of him whispered something to him and calmed him down.
Stannis was somewhat moved by Melisandre's suggestion, and pointed to the free people in the account book and said:
"Since you suggested that I recruit mercenaries, are there any free citizens willing to participate? You can refer to Davos. I am never stingy with rewards."
As Stannis spoke, Melisandre cast an ambiguous look at Prince Olaf of Thenn and other free folk leaders.
Even if Melisandre didn't pay any price, but just intentionally or unintentionally revealed a little charm under her long skirt, it was enough to make Olaf and other free folk leaders stunned. However, without Leon's order, Olaf and others felt very uncomfortable in their seats and could not sit still.
"Haha, Olaf, you want to save my rations? Then go ahead."
After hearing what Lyon said.
Olaf, the most powerful warrior among the free folk, stood up in an instant.
"The Thane tribe is involved! But I don't want any reward, I just want this woman to accompany me for one night!"
Melisandre had long since taken Stannis under her wing, and he was immediately furious when he heard such a rude remark, but before he could get angry, Melisandre whispered to him:
"As a follower of the Red God R'hllor, what does a small price mean? As long as I can win the throne for you, I will do anything."
Melisandre's words calmed Stannis's angry heart in time.
After calming down for a long time, he finally nodded and tolerated Olaf's offense.
Then Stannis gave Lyon a provocative look and said something divisive:
"As far as I know, the Flayed Family, the Frey Family, and their instructors, the Lannister Family, have committed a heinous crime of genocide against the Stark Family. Can the two Starks present here remain indifferent?"
Dragonstone has been the seat of the crown prince since the Targaryen family took control of Westeros.
This may not have been what Robert Baratheon had in mind when he appointed Stannis as the Duke of Dragonstone. So as a crown prince, Stannis has enough brains and means, but he just doesn't bother to use them on a daily basis.
Davos was obviously not qualified to say such divisive words; only he was qualified.
So, after he finished speaking, Jon and Benjen's faces changed drastically.
