HP: I just wanted to drop out of school, but I saved the world
Chapter 48: Ghost Demanding Wages
At dinner.
The temperature in the auditorium dropped suddenly, and a chill spread.
Hundreds of ghosts marched through the auditorium in an orderly procession.
They clenched their fists and raised them above their heads, shouting so loudly that their voices almost broke the dome:
"We want work, we want wages!"
"Ghosts also have spiritual powers!"
Peeves ran around the hall laughing and throwing paper balls at the students' heads.
Harry's nose was hit, and he opened a ball of paper in pain, only to find the following words written on it in bright red ink:
"Unscrupulous principal, withholding wages!"
"Is it the distortion of human nature or the decline of morality?"
"The unemployment rate is as high as 99%. Who will save us?"
"Ghost is unsalable, help us!"
The auditorium suddenly became noisy, and all the students were talking, looking around curiously, and discussing the big event of the ghost parade.
"Merlin - Albus, what's going on?"
Professor McGonagall looked around nervously, and the other professors present also clenched their wands nervously.
Dumbledore had never seen anything like it in his life.
He dropped his fork onto his plate and watched his old friend Binns Cuthbert float up to him and speak in a dark and angry tone:
"Since the day I died, I have never received a single Galleon."
"I gave everything I had to teach History of Magic at Hogwarts—"
Dumbledore looked at him in astonishment, not knowing what to say for a moment.
He managed to utter:
"But ghosts can't touch physical currency."
But Professor Binns became even angrier:
"Yeah, we can't touch it, so we need spiritual power!"
"Labor must be paid! Working for the school must be rewarded!"
Dinner was forced to be interrupted.
Several leading ghosts came to the principal's office.
The ghosts made two demands:
First: to pay the salary owed to Professor Binns for many years;
Second: provide jobs for the ghosts and pay them;
Dumbledore sat in his seat, listening to the ghosts talking to each other.
Ghosts want to work? Unheard of!
He stroked his white beard and secretly calculated Professor Binns' salary over the years since his death.
One...Ten...Hundred...Thousand...Ten Thousand...Hundred Thousand...
Merlin's beard! Even if he sold himself, he couldn't cover this huge hole!
Is Hogwarts going to go bankrupt in its own hands?
When something goes wrong, there must be something fishy going on. He strongly suspected that someone was instigating these ghosts to cause trouble.
Could it be Beauxbatons? Durmstrang?
If they could destroy Hogwarts' finances, they could naturally become the most powerful magic school in Europe!
What a vicious mind!
No, this money cannot be paid!
Dumbledore's blue eyes were full of seriousness. He adjusted his half-moon glasses and spoke in a persuasive tone:
"I understand your demands... Binns, but perhaps you would like to talk about what changed your mind?"
"After all, ghosts can't touch entities. I didn't think carefully before—"
Professor Binns' voice was still dry, but Dumbledore could hear some joy in it:
"We learned from Miss Jane an oriental secret technique that can alleviate everyone's pain."
"We are willing to pay only Galleons for this, but you also understand that ghosts have no property."
......
A few minutes later.
Jian Yu was summoned to the principal's office.
Dumbledore and the ghosts watched as she filled the cauldron with sand, inserted three sandalwood twigs and lit them.
The room was filled with smoke and woody aroma, which made the poor principal cough violently.
Almost at the moment the branches started burning, the ghosts closed their eyes, flared their nostrils, breathed deeply, and had an intoxicated look on their faces, which stunned Dumbledore.
He drew his wand and cast several detection spells on the cauldron and the branches above it, but found no trace of dark magic.
His hanging heart finally let go.
"Ahem, a nice... Eastern secret technique."
After the separation of the soul and body, the wizard can decide whether to leave the world completely or wander around in the form of a ghost in the places where he once left his mark.
To be a ghost means that you are not accepted by the underworld and the world of the living, and you are between the boundary between life and death.
And this kind of magic obviously breaks this boundary.
Dumbledore followed Jane's example and tried to light three sandalwood branches and inserted them into the sand in the crucible.
But he failed. Even though the same smell lingered in the room, the ghosts did not react at all.
He looked solemn, unable to comprehend such a thing.
It was a consensus in the wizarding world that the soul was a very mysterious thing, and even he, the master of the old wand, could not fully understand its mysteries.
But Jian Yu did it.
Is this the power of the law that this child encountered during his out-of-body experience?
This is truly an amazing talent!
After pondering for a few minutes, Dumbledore asked Jian Yu:
"This spell draws on the power of the law, and only you can cast it."
"Perhaps you would be willing to accept a part-time job for the sake of an old man like me, and improve the lives of these old guys?"
Since there was a reward to be gained, Jian Yu readily agreed.
The ghosts got the answers they wanted and left satisfied.
Professor Binns tried to raise the corners of his mouth. This professor of History of Magic, who always kept his head down and looked listless, stroked Jane Yu's head in the air:
"Thank you, kid."
When there was no ghost left in the headmaster's office, Dumbledore fell into deep thought again.
Possessing the ability to cross the boundary between life and death, and mastering the secret art of communicating with ghosts...
Is this a gift to the wizarding world, or another disaster?
Fortunately, Jian Yu's purpose is only to alleviate the ghosts' suffering, and he is a kind and good child.
But what if someone took advantage of her kindness?
He sat there, thinking carefully about his students' education.
He had no idea what to do for a moment, he just felt uneasy and even wanted to take a few puffs of sandalwood.
......
Professor Binns is a dull ghost. He always talks in a dull voice when he teaches the history of magic. He can't even remember the students' names and often calls the wrong students.
In fact, he didn't care what these students were called. The only thing he wanted to do was to keep teaching the history of magic.
But now, he thought that Jian Yu must learn this course well so that he could pass on his life's work to her.
When he crossed the blackboard again and came to the classroom to teach Slytherin's second year class, he kept calling on Jian Yu to answer questions, which made everyone dare not continue to nap.
"Miss Jane, when did the International Wizarding Conference of 1289 take place?"
Jian Yu was forced to wake up from his semi-sleeping state and spoke with a sleepy face:
"1289, sir."
Professor Binns continued to read the textbook in a flat tone, but soon he woke up Jian Yu again:
"Miss Jane, where did the goblin rebellion near Hogsmeade village take place in 1612?"
The knowledge entered Jian Yu's brain in a vicious way.
"Near Hogsmeade, sir."
Professor Binns' voice was still dry, but everyone could still feel his satisfaction from his tone.
"Twenty points for Slytherin."
The Slytherin students present managed to hold back their laughter and looked at Jian Yu with incredible eyes, as if they saw some humanoid magical creature sitting on the bench.
"Merlin - Professor Binns is like her score-giving boy!"
"Can ghosts be cursed? Professor Binns looks like he's possessed!"
The History of Magic class had never been so joyful. For the first time, the little snakes finished the entire class in a conscious state.
But Dumbledore smiled when he heard this:
"If you have read the history of the school, you will know——"
"Professor Binns was praised by the Slytherins for his quick mind and clear thinking when he was alive."
“All the students love his class.”
Although they were only minor changes, he was still happy for the ghost who had been professor of History of Magic at Hogwarts since its founding.
