As an important part of Chinese traditional culture, Taoism's profound thoughts have had a far-reaching impact on the art of Feng Shui.

A large number of talismans are widely used in various fields such as environment, architecture, housing, production and daily life, becoming an indispensable part of ancient Feng Shui.

In fact, many talismans are themselves pictorial expressions of geography and environment. They are the result of Taoist priests throughout the ages integrating rational observation of the natural environment and mountain and river feng shui with mystical experience.

Because of this, people believe that these symbols have the magical effect of exorcising evil spirits and protecting the country. These special symbols are collectively called geographical symbols.

Among the many geographical symbols, the most famous one is the Map of the True Shapes of the Five Mountains, which came out during the Wei and Jin Dynasties.

As recorded in the "Xia Lan" of the "Bao Pu Zi Neipian", "What the Taoists value most is the inner text of the Three Emperors and the true form map of the Five Mountains."

This fully demonstrates the lofty status of the Five Mountains True Shape Map in the society at that time and the degree to which it was respected.

Today, there are several maps of the true shapes of the Five Mountains included in the Taoist Canon, and their graphics are generally similar.

In fact, in addition to the Five Mountains, there are also Huoshan, Qianshan, Qingchengshan and Lushan, which are called the Four Auxiliary Mountains. Each mountain has two true-image maps, one with text descriptions and the other with no characters.

Taoist books call the part without words "the true form of the upper five mountains" and the part with words "the true form of the lower five mountains".

Through the accompanying text descriptions, you can understand the basic conditions of each mountain.

According to the "Dongxuan Lingbao Five Mountains Ancient True Shape Map", the original map was drawn with three colors. Black represents the shape of the mountain, red represents the water source, and the yellow part is the entrance to the cave.

If the picture is smaller, it will show tiny hill-like shapes; if it is larger, it will show the spectacular scenery of Longxiu.

Ge Hong once said that the height should be depicted according to the actual terrain, and the length should be chosen according to the specific image.

As for the places where the magic grass and stone chambers are painted at the water source, they were naturally marked by the immortals in later times on this picture.

What appeared before my eyes were all black and white engravings. The black, curved rectangles extending from east to west represented the towering mountains; and the winding curved lines in the mountains symbolized the rushing water.

As for those blank spaces, they must be the blessed places where the Taoists practice diligently!

Combined with the text descriptions next to it, we can not only clearly understand the specific path up the mountain, but also know the direction of the water and springs in the mountain, and we can also grasp the distribution of various magical herbs, the specific locations of caves and palaces, and even the height, width and overall range of the mountain.

It is not difficult to see from these points that these maps do have high practical value, and their emergence must be closely related to the detailed observation of the actual mountains and terrain.
