Wilderness Redemption Tour
Chapter 326 Ambush
The road from here to the top of the mountain is a gentle slope covered with green grass. The slope is not steep, and the distance is not too long for the three people riding on horses.
When they were about to reach the top of the mountain, Hamish, who was walking in front, seemed to have discovered something. He lightly squeezed his horse's belly to speed up a little and said, "There seems to be something on the ground ahead."
After running two steps, he confirmed what it was. "It looks like a white-tailed deer. Was it just killed?"
Sadie took the initiative to rush out of the team and said, "I'll go see if the blood has dried."
Riding his horse to the deer's corpse, Sadie dismounted and touched it without even checking its wounds. He confidently reported to his companions who were waiting not far away, "It died not long ago, and the body is still warm."
"It looks like this is its dinner, so where is it going now?" Hamish looked around, searching for any signs of its prey.
Lin Yan rode his horse around the top of the mountain and found that there were bones of animals that had been eaten clean in several places. It seemed that this place was the gray wolf's private restaurant.
After looking for a long time, Hamish said a little frustratedly: "I can't find it. I think it must have run away and hidden somewhere."
"Why don't we ambush it here?" Sadie gave her suggestion.
Hamish nodded and was about to speak when his attention was drawn to a moving gray shadow below.
"Wait..." Hamish's smile spread again. "Ha, there it is."
The old man's eyes were fixed on the gray shadow, and he did not rush to chase after it. Instead, he asked Lin Yan and Sadie for their opinions. "What do you think? Should we chase after it, or wait here for it to come back?"
"We can do anything." Lin Yan looked at Sadie and confirmed that she had the same idea as him, then said, "If you want to chase it, we will accompany you."
"Very good." Hamish was quite pleased with Lin Yan's answer. "Then let's go."
Hamish squeezed his legs against the horse's belly and chased after his target again.
The gray wolf, which was leisurely walking on the grass just now, seemed to have sensed something when Hamish rushed towards it. Its ears moved twice, and then it ran faster as if it smelled some danger.
"Oh no, it's running." Seeing the gray wolf preparing to escape, Hamish turned back and urged Lin Yan and Sadie, "Hurry, speed up, while we can still see it."
Lin Yan sped up and followed, but soon Hamish slowed down again. "Damn it, it ran into the woods ahead. We can only track it on foot."
After getting off the horse, Hamish patted Buell on the back and said to him, "Go, find a safe place for yourself."
After finishing his instructions, he looked at Lin Yanshadi behind him and said, "Just let your horse follow Buel. It is very familiar with this place and knows where it is safest to stay."
Lin Yan imitated Hamish and patted his Arabian horse on the back, and the latter really followed Buell obediently and left.
After settling the horses, Hamish strode into the woodland in front of him with his shotgun. "Come on, leave the tracking to me, both of you follow closely."
"Take out your guns, just in case. Wolves are very cunning animals. Maybe it's hiding in some bushes and ambushing us now."
The forest that Lin Yan and his team entered was a sparsely wooded pine forest. The pine trees here were of the short variety, only about three meters tall. However, the other plants here grew extremely lush, with unknown shrubs as tall as a person and weeds that were ankle-deep. It was no exaggeration to say that this place was a paradise for some animals.
It was not difficult to track the wolf in this place. Based on the direction of the fallen weeds, not to mention Hamish, even Lin Yan, who had only mastered basic tracking techniques, could easily identify the direction of the gray wolf.
"It should be right ahead, about 700 to 800 meters away..." Hamish carefully used the barrel of his gun to push aside a bush, and after confirming that there was no danger, he passed through it. "Or it may be behind the next bush."
"It turned this way. You guys pay attention to the movements around you, okay? The traces here are not obvious. I need to focus on finding the traces it left behind."
"Okay, this way, it goes downstairs."
“I feel like we’re getting closer to it.”
Further ahead was an open space with sparse grass and trees. Hamish had just used the barrel of his gun to push aside a gap in the bushes in front of him, and with shining eyes, he lowered his voice and said, "Hey! Look! We found it!"
As he spoke, Hamish widened the gap so that Lin Yan and Sadie behind him could see clearly.
What came into view was a sturdy gray wolf with its back to Lin Yan and others, standing at the edge of the open space, its body moving up and down, as if it was eating something.
"Leave it to me." After making sure that the other party was defenseless against them, Hamish took the initiative to take on the task of shooting.
When Hamish raised his gun and aimed at the prey, Lin Yan noticed that his gun was obviously quite old, and the wooden handle of the gun was severely worn, and there were even traces of repairs in some places. However, it can be seen that Hamish cherished this gun very much, and the metal parts of the gun were polished with gun oil, so even if this gun was an antique from the civil war period, Lin Yan did not doubt its power at all.
"Click." Hamish pulled the bolt carefully, fearing to alarm the prey in front of him.
But no matter how lightly Hamish moved, the bolt-pulling sound was still as loud as it should be. Lin Yan was quite sure that the gray wolf on the opposite side must have heard the sound, and he was even ready to shoot before Hamish. But what surprised him was that the gray wolf in front of him seemed to have completely let down its guard, and even though it heard the strange sound, it still didn't care and was unmoved.
Hamish was so excited that he naturally didn't notice these details. Seeing that he didn't alarm the prey, he breathed a sigh of relief. After confirming that his aim was correct, he decisively pulled the trigger.
"boom!"
Along with the green smoke coming out of the muzzle, the gray wolf not far away let out a short and shrill whimper, but it did not fall down. Instead, it raised its head and howled.
Lin Yan had been on guard against this kind of situation from the beginning. The possibility of killing a prey with its back turned to them with one shot was very small, even for Hamish, a veteran who had been baptized by war.
“Ouch~” “Ouch~”
As the gray wolf howled to the sky, more wolf howls were heard from the surrounding bushes.
Hamish's face turned pale when he heard this. "Oh my God, there are other wolves here, we're ambushed!"
