Chapter 20: Chinese people, aren't they amazing?
Unfortunately, her interesting emotional fluctuations lasted only a moment.

A moment later, she reverted to her indifferent, emotionless demeanor.

In response to Li Yu's statement, Una cleared her throat and said seriously:
“It’s no use telling me all this.”

"I am a police officer, not a judge."

"My only responsibility is to arrest criminals and collect evidence."

Whether you are guilty or not is up to the judge to decide.

"In short, you can stay here for a while."

"I assure you in the name of the police that we will never let any bad person go unpunished, nor will we wrong any innocent person."

Before Li Yu could reply, Una slammed the thick book shut, said "Goodbye" indifferently, and got up to leave without the slightest hesitation.

Listening to the footsteps fading into the distance, Li Yu scratched his head, his face full of helplessness.

"To spend my first night in San Francisco at the police station... what an interesting start..."

For some reason, he suddenly thought of Jane.

—I wonder where she is now, and whether she has returned home safely?
At this moment, Li Yu suddenly remembered something, belatedly realizing what was happening, his expression changed, and he muttered to himself:

"Oh no... I forgot to ask her for dinner... Isn't anyone going to take care of my dinner? Even if they don't feed me, they could at least give me a cigarette..."

At the exact moment he finished speaking, his stomach made a "gurgling" sound.

……

……

Una strode into her boss's office.

As soon as she entered, a strong smell of smoke and a disgusting stench of feet assaulted her senses.

Una frowned and subconsciously held her breath.

In the office, a middle-aged man with a bloated figure and thinning hair was slumped in a chair, his two smelly feet alternately propped up on the long table, holding a vulgar magazine in his hands, reading it with great interest.

This man's name is Jack Johnson, and he is Una's direct superior.

"Sir, here is the suspect's detailed information. Please take a look."

Despite her discomfort, Una handed the thick book in her hands to the other person on the table, turned to the page containing Li Yu's information, and then stepped aside with an air of importance.

"Oh, Officer Campbell, thank you for your hard work."

Sheriff Johnson gave a lukewarm compliment, then put down the vulgar magazine in his hand, sat up slightly, picked up the thick book, and began to read it quickly.

"Wow... this Chinese guy is pretty good. Facing opponents who are so much weaker physically, and even fighting two against one, he managed to win without getting hurt."

Una said seriously:
"I also find it incredible."

"I once suspected that this person had been smoking too much marijuana, drifting between reality and illusion, spouting endless nonsense."

"In any case, it's best to investigate the whole story as soon as possible."

"Sir, please hand this case over to me! I'm sure I can find out the truth within two days!"

After saying that, Una instinctively puffed out her chest, and the police badge pinned to the towering mountain peak gleamed under the electric light.

Sheriff Johnson reflexively raised his eyes, and under the influence of the physical law that "the greater the mass, the greater the gravity," he quietly stared at the magnificent pair of beings, swallowing hard.

Although he really wanted to keep his eyes glued to it, he quickly looked away and pretended to be indifferent in order to maintain his polite "gentlemanly image".

“Officer Campbell, there’s no need for that.”

As he spoke, he closed the thick book, leaned back with his large body, and comfortably sank into his chair: "Anyway, he's just a Chinese person, no need to be so serious, just do a quick check."

"In this way, it saves you trouble, it saves me trouble, it saves everyone trouble, only the Chinese person has to suffer a little."

"He's quite good-looking; he'll probably be very popular in prison."

Una was stunned.

About three seconds later, she gritted her teeth and questioned loudly:
"Sheriff! Are you kidding me?"
"If you're joking, then your joke isn't funny at all!"

“If that Chinese man is truly innocent, then our actions will do him a terrible disservice!”

Commander Johnson picked up the coffee beside him and adopted a more earnest tone:

"Officer Campbell, I've given similar advice many times before."

"If we had to handle every case in detail, even if we expanded our police force tenfold, we still wouldn't be able to keep up."

"Therefore, we need to make choices selectively."

"Take serious care of white people's affairs, take care of black people's affairs casually, and don't take care of Chinese people's affairs."

"I'm doing this for your own good. If you want to have a comfortable life in the police station, you should listen to the advice of your elders."

Upon hearing this, Una's face instantly flushed red, and visibly indignant anger gathered on her cheeks.

She reacted like a wildcat whose tail had been stepped on, instantly becoming agitated.
"Sir! Investigating cases based solely on personal whims—can this be called police work? This is a well-dressed beast! Just like those perverted, shameless, and hypocritical British!"

Her voice was very loud and carried far.

The other police officers who were busy with their own tasks outside the room turned around after hearing the loud noise. When they found that it was Una making a fuss, they calmly looked away, as if they were already used to it.

Sheriff Johnson shrank back and instinctively raised his hand to cover his ears.

After Una's "sonic attack" stopped, he lowered his hands from his ears and glared at Una with a hostile expression:

"Officer Campbell, I'm just trying to be helpful. Don't blame me for not warning you, I meet several new recruits like you every year who are full of enthusiasm and eager to solve cases, and they don't all end up in a bad way."

Before he could finish speaking, a frantic shout suddenly came from outside the office:

"Sheriff! The identities of the two deceased have been confirmed!"

Accompanied by hurried footsteps approaching from afar, a young, handsome police officer burst into the office.

Upon seeing Una there, the young police officer paused for a moment, then gave her a fawning smile and stammered a greeting:

"Oh, Miss Campbell, you're here. Good evening!"

Una frowned and glared at the other person:
"Officer Otto, when we're on duty, please call me 'Officer Campbell'!"

"Oh, yes, I'm sorry, I just said it on a whim."

The young officer, called "Ott," wanted to continue chatting with Una, but Sergeant Johnson, half jealous and half impatient, interrupted:
"Officer Ultra, why are you in such a hurry? Is something the matter?"

Remembering the important matter, Ott quickly stood up straight, saluted Sheriff Johnson, and then spoke swiftly and clearly in a serious tone:
"The identities of the two men who died on the train have been confirmed! They were the 'Lavrov brothers'!"

In an instant, the entire hall fell silent...

Johnson's eyes widened.

Una's small mouth was slightly open.

Even the police officers outside the house stopped what they were doing and turned around to look at them with disbelief when they heard the name "Lavrov Brothers".
