Chapter 19: A Scottish Girl Will Never Be a Slave!
Her short, forceful, and always eliding way of speaking—often omitting "t" and "g"—was truly iconic.
Although she didn't speak fast, some of her words still left Li Yu completely confused, unable to understand what she meant at all.
For example, right now, Li Yu scratched his head and said helplessly:
“Officer Campbell, I’m sorry, this may be related to my knowledge and background. Could you please repeat the question?”
Upon hearing this, Una paused for a moment, then looked embarrassed.
"Tsk... I'm speaking so slowly... and you still can't understand... Is my accent really that bad...?"
After muttering this, she cleared her throat and repeated the question in slower, more standard English.
After asking more than ten questions, Una temporarily shut her mouth and focused on writing something on the thick book in front of her.
For a moment, Li Yu had nothing to do but look at the beautiful policewoman in front of him with great interest.
In the United States of that era, it was extremely rare for a woman to be a police officer.
Even if you searched the entire United States, the number of female police officers you could find would probably not exceed two fingers.
It's hard to believe that he could encounter such a rare "species." Is it a blessing or a curse?
Feeling utterly bored, Li Yu couldn't help but casually strike up a conversation:
"Officer Campbell, you have a Scottish accent. So you're British."
He only wanted to chat a bit to pass the time, and he wouldn't care even if the other person ignored him completely.
Unexpectedly... at the very moment he finished speaking, a sudden change occurred!
But then Una's eyes widened suddenly, her expression changing drastically, as if she had heard a terrible, evil "unforgivable curse."
The next moment, she suddenly put down her pen and slammed her palms on the table, making a loud noise.
Immediately afterwards, she straightened up and leaned forward, her upper body spanning the entire table, her delicate and cute doll-like face close to Li Yu's nose.
At this moment, they were so close that Li Yu could even clearly see his reflection in the other's eyes, as well as the rising, boiling, intense anger.
"I'm not an Englishman! How could I be an Englishman! I'm a proud Scotsman!"
"Look closely! Look at my vibrant red hair!"
As she spoke, Una pulled the short ponytail from the back of her head to her face so that Li Yu could see it more clearly.
"Red is the hair color of the Celts! My red hair is a symbol of the Celts! Can the English have such beautiful hair color?"
"The British are hypocritical liars! Disgraceful thugs! Disgusting perverts!"
"Wherever the British go, they bring war and oppression!"
Ireland was colonized by the British for eight hundred years, and it wasn't until three years ago that the Anglo-Irish Treaty was finally signed, establishing the Irish Free State!
"Even so, Northern Ireland was still controlled by the British!"
"My homeland, Scotland, is still colonized by the British! We have failed to win our precious freedom!"
"Just you wait! One day, we Scots will be liberated from the despicable rule of the British! We will drive every single one of the British out of Scotland!"
The sudden burst of historical information caused Li Yu's brain to briefly freeze, and he blinked unconsciously and blankly.
Because of her petite figure and cute appearance, Una's angry expression is not scary, but rather rather adorable.
Of course, jokes aside, while the other person's current appearance is certainly cute, it cannot be ignored that their anger is already evident.
It was obvious that Li Yu's statement that she was British really angered her.
Li Yu knew that the Scots and the English had a very complex history of grievances… However, he never expected that his unintentional remark would provoke such a strong reaction from the other party.
This may also be related to the historical context.
It is now 1924, and the British Empire is still... or rather, has always been that evil empire that crosses the line of human morality and is fond of stirring up trouble everywhere.
The Scots and Irish will always have the most compelling reasons and the most solid grounds to hate the English.
Una's outburst created an awkward atmosphere.
At this moment, Una belatedly realized that she had lost her composure and sat back down in her original seat with an embarrassed expression.
"I'm sorry, I was rude."
"In short, Scotsmen are Scotsmen and Brits are Brits, don't confuse them."
“We Scots don’t like to hear people call us Brits, just like calling a black person a ‘nigger.’ It’s a bloody insult.”
After saying that, she picked up the water glass next to her, held it to her lips as if to make excuses, and pretended to drink water.
Li Yu came to his senses and slowly said:
"It's okay, you don't need to apologize. I'm the one who should apologize. I'm sorry for saying things that upset you."
Although it was unintentional, it is an undeniable fact that he inadvertently touched a nerve with his words.
Li Yu understands this feeling very well—if someone told him, "You shouldn't drizzle soy sauce on rice noodle rolls, you should drizzle yogurt on them, preferably the kind that's sticky and thick," he would also get very angry!
Bottom-line issues cannot be taken lightly!
Una didn't want the atmosphere to remain awkward, so she lowered her head, stared intently at the thick book in front of her, and abruptly steered the conversation back to the main topic:
"Mr. Li, I have a general understanding of your specific situation."
"Taking down those two strong men with just a book and a pencil... Although this sounds like bragging, I have a feeling you're not lying."
"We will conduct a detailed investigation later, please rest assured."
"If you are truly innocent, we will set you free."
Upon hearing this, Li Yu sighed softly, then spread his hands, exhausting all his acting talent to create a "pitiful" expression:
"Officer Campbell, I am truly innocent."
"Those two big guys suddenly pointed guns at my head. I was terrified and instinctively fought back."
"Unexpectedly, although the other party was big, they were actually very weak. I just tapped them lightly with a book and poked them lightly with a pencil, and they fell to the ground dead."
"My actions were perfectly reasonable and justifiable self-defense."
“Officer Campbell, even though we’ve only just met, I can already tell you’re a good officer. You must stand up for me.”
Upon hearing this, Una paused for a moment.
In that instant, thanks to his exceptionally good eyesight enhanced by the skill "One Against a Thousand Lv.B", Li Yu clearly saw a subtle change in Una's facial expression.
Although it was only fleeting, when she heard the compliment of "good police officer," the corners of her beautifully shaped mouth did indeed curl up slightly, and her beautiful eyes sparkled with joy and satisfaction.
