Super Magician: The Magic Network Collapsed Again at the Start
Chapter 7 Vampire Mosquito Bats
Chapter 7 Vampire Mosquito Bats
"So what do we do now?" Blatt asked proactively, as it concerned the magic network, and he subconsciously thought that a knowledgeable mage would have more insight.
“Your idea is fine. Most subterranean creatures don’t like light. Let’s go hide on Dusthawk Mountain tonight, but we can’t stay at Baldur’s Gate for long.”
The underground is barren and harsh; the gray dwarves, once they come up, will certainly not want to leave easily. The sentries won't leave the upper city, and Flamefist might not be reliable. We must escape from here; passively waiting might make things worse.
"Tomorrow we'll go to Flying Dragon Bridge, where the Flame Fist Fortress is located. Once we cross the Chongsa River, we'll be safe," Anser pondered.
"I'll listen to you." Blatt nodded slightly; leaving was indeed safer.
Flying Dragon Bridge is located in the southeast of Dust Eagle Mountain. For subterranean creatures to get here, they would have to circle most of the mountain from the north and pass through several outer city districts, which is impossible to do so quickly.
“However,” Anser changed the subject, his expression complicated, “before that, I need to go save my parents. They’re in the sow’s hoof area. You don’t need to come with me; we’ll go separately first thing tomorrow morning.”
He didn't have much affection for the original owner's parents; his memories were like a slideshow, incomplete, making it difficult for him to connect with the original owner's emotions.
But if given the chance, he still wanted to try to save them. If he ignored it, he'd always have a lingering unease.
However, if he encounters danger, he will definitely prioritize his own safety.
“I’ll go with you.” Blatt said without hesitation. “The sow’s hoof area isn’t far from Flying Dragon Bridge, they should be fine.”
"I hope so. How's your recovery going?" Anser felt a sense of urgency; the darker it got, the worse it would be for them.
“No problem, he can fight and run. Don’t underestimate a soldier’s recovery ability.” Blatt tied his hair with a rag, looking energetic and capable.
“Let’s go.” Anser stood up, grabbed his staff, and walked outside.
Blatt picked up the bundle, tied it tightly, and walked past Anser in a few steps, sword in hand, ahead of him.
As night fell, the cold moonlight shone down, making the Chongsa River sparkle. Unfortunately, the surrounding area was littered with broken walls and corpses, resembling a scene from hell.
"Don't go through the cliff gate, follow the Chongsa River into the fall zone," Anser whispered after walking a few dozen steps.
Blatter understood and immediately turned south.
The grey dwarves are an intelligent race and will likely occupy key crossroads, waiting for humans to come to them.
These refugees usually carry valuables and food, saving them the time of searching and packing.
After walking several hundred meters, the buildings became sparse and lacked cover, with a section of the city wall, mostly collapsed, lying in front of us.
Upon reaching the largest gap, Blatt suddenly stopped, his nose twitching, his eyes scanning the sticky soil covering the rocks with wariness.
Anser also noticed something was wrong: "Let's go somewhere else."
Blatt nodded slightly, slowly retreating with his sword in hand. After walking a dozen meters away, he continued south along the city wall.
A few curses came from the darkness, and the two quickened their pace. Escaping was the priority now; they couldn't afford to get entangled with them.
Where there is natural disaster, there is also man-made disaster. What could be worse than human beings?
Having learned from this experience, Blatter deliberately chose a section of the city wall that was half-collapsed, with rubble everywhere and uneven terrain, making it difficult to walk on, but it was safe.
Blatt, as expected of a warrior, was far more athletic than Anser. He carried a large pack, scouting ahead, climbing and jumping, and had to stop from time to time to keep watch and wait for Anser.
Anser secretly mocked himself, admitting that he had been fooled by Blatt's initial disheveled appearance.
In games, even those with poor stats can become professionals, but reality is different. Without talent, you really can't succeed. Nobles and major organizations won't waste their precious resources on useless people.
Unless you're incredibly lucky!
"Watch out!" Blatt's voice was urgent.
Anser instinctively lunged down and rolled over.
The next moment, a dark shadow swept past his head, moving so fast that it was impossible to see clearly, and a faint smell of blood filled the air.
[You were attacked by mosquito bats, but missed...] The battle log flashed by.
Anser was startled; mosquito bats are social creatures.
He gripped his staff tightly and scanned the area, but found no swarm of mosquitoes and bats. He could only faintly hear the flapping of wings overhead.
"What the hell?" Blatt was also attacked, but his perception and reaction were faster.
He dropped the package, jumped a few steps to Anser's side, and stood guard back to back.
“Mosquito bats, blood-sucking, social creatures.” Anser pulled out a wooden stick imbued with light magic from his robes, but did not remove the black cloth.
Blatt looked up and observed for a moment, but did not see any other danger: "It seems there are only two."
"They might have gotten separated, or they might have gotten high," Anser speculated. Mosquito bats feed on the blood of living creatures and have little intelligence. It's not surprising that they acted so arrogantly after coming to the ground and seeing how easy it was to bully humans.
"They didn't leave."
"Let's go, you seize the opportunity."
"it is good."
The two walked slowly forward, with Blatt carrying the package and following behind Anser, waiting for the "opportunity" to arrive.
Anser remained calm. The mosquito bats were weak and their attacks were not fatal. Moreover, he had a shield spell that could activate a force field shield the moment he was hit by an attack.
Just as the two were about to enter the Dust Eagle Mountain area, the two mosquito bats could no longer restrain themselves and swooped down from the air almost simultaneously.
Blatt paused: "They're here—"
Before he finished speaking, Anser suddenly ripped off the black cloth, and the light instantly dispelled the darkness, revealing two strange creatures that looked like a mixture of a large bat and a large mosquito.
Mosquito bats are afraid of light. Sudden bright light startles them, causing them to forcibly change their flight patterns in an attempt to escape.
"Shh-"
A flash of sword light, and a mosquito-like bat was cleaved in two, its blood splattering everywhere.
(Freezing rays)
Anser shot out a beam of white light from his palm, which instantly landed on another mosquito bat.
The bat froze, white mist billowing from its body, and fell to the ground with a thud. Its wings fluttered twice, and then it remained still.
[You cast a Freeze Ray on the Mosquito Bat, stunning it. The Mosquito Bat is hit, taking 4 points of Cold damage, a critical hit that kills the target. Gain 25 Combat Experience...]
Not feeling safe, Blatt stepped forward and pinned him to the ground with a single sword strike.
"How ugly." Only then did he see the full appearance of the mosquito bat.
It resembles a bat, but has a long, needle-like beak, is entirely scarlet, has black downy hair on its head and back, many claws, and a long tail.
Anser wrapped the glowing wooden stick tightly again and stuffed it into his bosom.
"Hurry up, hurry up." With that, he picked up his staff and left.
Light can be beneficial in combat, but it can also attract danger.
“Sigh,” Blatt glanced at the dead mosquito bats on the ground, sighed, picked up his package, and followed.
"Based on my experience in adventures, mosquito bats are definitely excellent magical materials, and it would be a shame to throw them away."
"Let's save our lives first." Anser found it rather strange. He hadn't expected that Blatt, who seemed so cautious and careful, would be so greedy. Was this a common trait among adventurers?
“You don’t understand, you can’t do anything without money.” Blatt’s heart ached as he thought about how all his assets had vanished.
"Let's think of something tomorrow."
"This... I hope we don't run into Flame Fist; they never listen to explanations..."
Beyond the collapsed city wall lies Dust Eagle Mountain, at the foot of which lies the outer city area – the Rolling Land area. The two walked along without any lights or people.
One day after the disaster struck, everyone who could run had already run away.
Anser did not venture deep into the city, but instead headed east along the Chongsa River, eventually finding a group of refugees at the cliffside cemetery.
The two did not stop, but continued into Dust Eagle Mountain, crossed a ridge, and finally stopped in a secluded valley at a high altitude.
There is a small woodland here, and the mountain provides enough cover to block the view of other creatures.
Anser used the staff like a stick, and after confirming that there were no poisonous snakes hiding in the grass, he threw down his backpack, plopped down on the ground, and let out a heavy sigh.
"It should be safe now."
Blatt placed the package beside him, picked up his longsword, and began clearing the area, while also cutting down tree branches to make some makeshift alarm devices.
Anser possessed survival skills and knew some wilderness survival techniques, but he didn't move.
He now felt hungry, tired, and mentally exhausted; casting spells did come at a price.
