Chapter 77 The Mutant Past
Chapter 77 The Mutant Past
“We need a plane to take this little boy to Madridpo. In return, you have to keep an eye on the manor for me and make sure the Hellfire people don’t take it.”
Noticing Nick Fury's concern for Spider-Man, Cyclops Scott Summers quickly used this to make a deal with him. He and Beast took Spider-Man to Madrid for treatment in exchange for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s protection of the Professor's legacy. In any case, he couldn't let the Professor's legacy fall into the hands of another ambitious person.
Nick Fury did not intend to refuse the deal, but he made another request.
"I need you to go with the Spider Silk agents."
At the same time, Peter, Gwen, and Cindy all looked at Nick Fury, and Peter even asked the question directly.
"Didn't Cindy... transfer schools today?"
"Her mission is highly relevant to you, especially after you demonstrated your ability to traverse the multiverse, so her actions will be adjusted according to you."
Nick Fury raised an eyebrow, not seeing it as a problem at all: "Besides, Agent Spider-Silk was specially trained to handle your situation. Whether it's to subdue you when your abilities go out of control or to sense your physical condition, she's the best person for you."
Gwen looked at Cindy in surprise, who remained silent and whose gaze seemed unfocused. She realized she had no reason to stop this. And she had to admit that in this matter, the spider silk was indeed more helpful to Peter Parker.
"If only I had been the one bitten at Osborn Tech that day," Gwen couldn't help but think. At least she could have helped Peter in this situation.
But Peter Parker was thinking about something completely different.
“What about New York City? I mean, if I leave, but Cindy stays in New York, then at least New York will still have a Spider-Man. But what if we both leave? What will happen to New York?”
“Hmph~ Do you really think New York City revolves around you, kid?” Nick Fury laughed upon hearing Peter Parker’s remarks, shaking his head involuntarily. “You’re only going for a week at most. In a week, how bad do you think New York can get? Alright, that’s settled then. Let’s go right away.”
Completely bewildered and unable to control his powers, Spider-Man was taken to a Quinjet fighter jet summoned by S.H.I.E.L.D. The four of them boarded the plane and headed towards Madrid, an independent and neutral city-state in Southeast Asia.
Peter and Gwen exchanged a simple wave goodbye; Happy would take Gwen home. For some reason, Nick Fury, like Happy, also made a "I'm watching you" gesture, which Peter found somewhat puzzling. As for Gwen, she could only look up and watch Peter leave.
"So... I heard that the X-Men have their own fighter jet, why don't we go ride in that?"
Peter, now seated in the Quinjet, was curious why they weren't flying the X-Men's famous Blackbird fighter jet, and Beast's answer was quite concise and clear.
"Because it's broken."
"Oh, uh... that's a very straightforward answer."
Peter looked at Beast, then at Cyclops, who looked at the young man and offered further explanation: "The X-Men have been disbanded for six years, and no one has maintained them. Most of the parts have broken down." "So how did all this happen?"
Peter naturally asked why the X-Men in this universe were destroyed. He had wanted to know the answer to this question since he was very young after his rebirth, but he had never been able to find a conclusion.
Why did the X-Men in this world perish?
Seeing that Cyclops didn't refuse, Beast began to tell them the history of the X-Men in this world.
Before World War II, mutants were widely believed to be wizards and witches. Given that their abilities weren't particularly powerful at the time, most mutants went into hiding to avoid persecution. During the war, large numbers were captured by Germany for human experimentation. After the war, the U.S. military discovered this evidence and continued human experimentation on mutants, using a large number of mutant soldiers in the Vietnam War.
"The professor and Erik Lansher, also known as Magneto, met around that time. They were good friends. One was a professor of genetics, and the other was a Jewish survivor of a concentration camp. They were both mutants, so they became friends. The professor published many articles on the X gene, proving the biological existence of mutants and that they were not aliens, but still belonged to the genus Homo at the genetic level."
"They were constantly campaigning domestically, hoping to fight for fair treatment of mutants. Later, the two of them went to the front lines in Vietnam. Magneto saw the living conditions and treatment of mutant soldiers, as well as what the US military was doing in Vietnam... In short, he thought of concentration camps."
Beast sighed. The way the US military managed mutant soldiers at the time was no different from how Germany treated Jews and Soviets in concentration camps. Coupled with the US military's actions in the Vietnam War, it eventually led Magneto's thinking to become radicalized. He directly chose to unleash his powers to rescue the mutant soldiers who had suffered inhuman treatment.
Magneto wanted to lead these mutant soldiers in a direct rebellion, while Professor X wanted them to return to the United States, tell their true stories of the battlefield, and engage in anti-war and civil rights movements to achieve their legitimate demands.
This is why Professor X and Magneto parted ways. Their ideologies gradually became more radical. Magneto began to believe that mutants represented the next stage of human evolution, just as Homo sapiens would eventually replace Neanderthals and eventually modern humans. Data supported his idea—the new generation of mutants was becoming increasingly powerful, and their numbers were constantly increasing.
As for the professor, he believes that mutants should live in harmony with humans and that mutants are a minority who should fight for their rights through legal means.
Upon hearing this, Peter Parker couldn't help but ask a very important question.
"Why do you say mutants are a minority? I mean, from the perspective of existing human ethnic groups, mutants don't qualify as any of them, right? They include white, black, and yellow people, and they can intermarry with humans normally. More importantly, mutant abilities have nothing to do with the evolutionary law of survival of the fittest, right? Their abilities seem quite random. Why do these two think mutants are a special group separate from ordinary humans?"
Beast and Cyclops exchanged glances. After all, the child was right. No matter how you look at it, mutants are "humans with superpower genes," not a separate race. After all, there is no reproductive isolation between the two, and mutant abilities do not differentiate or change specifically with their living environment.
In the end, it was Laser Eyes who saved the professor some face.
"That's because the professor and Magneto grew up in the 60s and 70s, and they loved doing this kind of thing back then, like racial equality and stuff. If they knew what was going to happen now, I'm sure they wouldn't think that way."
