Chapter 136 Kidnapped by Silver Key, but the rival
After saying that, Rose grabbed Cohen and hugged him tightly for a long time.
"You know, I'm not like other kids." Cohen's voice was muffled by Rose. "There won't be any big—"
"You are just a child, the best child in the world."
Rose kissed Cohen's forehead.
“Always will be in my eyes.”
"Where have you been, Rose? Coin hasn't returned to Hogwarts—ah, has Coin returned?"
Edward appeared at the bedroom door panting, looked at Rose, and then looked at Cohen who had returned to the bedroom.
"So... you didn't run away from home?"
"I just want to go buy some things..." Cohen got out of Rose's arms and explained to Edward, "It's just a surprise for you."
"..."
Edward's expression twisted.
"Don't—don't—tell Martha about this 'surprise'—"
"Ed? Where's breakfast?" Martha's voice came from downstairs. "If you haven't prepared it, I'll fry some bacon for you..."
"Let me do it..."
Edward turned around and shouted in response.
-
Edward and Rose hadn't told Martha that Cohen was missing—they were right to do so, and they really shouldn't have told her, lest she get worried too.
However, Edward went down a little late, so their breakfast was changed to something burnt.
Edward prepared some new bacon and toast, but Martha's breakfast was not thrown away, so Martha not only picked up a lot of the charred substance with tongs herself, but also enthusiastically picked up several pieces for Edward, Rose and Cohen.
"So don't go to your grandma's house alone during the summer vacation." Edward whispered to Cohen during breakfast. "She always thinks that food cooked by hand tastes better than food made with magic."
"Of course I have to bring you along. These... bacones make me feel like a furnace." Cohen grumbled, "Because they taste like some kind of coal..."
But Cohen ate a lot of the burnt meat because Martha looked at Cohen with extremely eager eyes, as if "Cohen likes to eat" could prove that her cooking theory was correct.
Fortunately, Cohen's body is relatively strong, and he would not be poisoned even if real coal went into his stomach (don't imitate him).
After breakfast, Edward and Rose did not ask Cohen where he bought the candles, and Cohen did not tell anyone about his wandering around Knockturn Alley.
Just think about it, they wouldn't want their son to sneak out of the house in the middle of the night and run to Knockturn Alley, where there are all dark wizards with evil intentions and contraband of dark magic.
The peaceful life continued until Cohen returned to school, which was the day before the end of Christmas vacation.
January 7th.
The wind was blowing hard outside the window, rattling the doors and windows, and the sky was as gloomy as spoiled mashed potatoes.
But the weather did not affect Martha's return home. Thanks to Edward's application for the Floo Network, she did not need to rely on those means of transportation to go back.
After lunch, Rose received a message from a colleague at the Times.
"Elvis from the reporter's office is missing." Rose frowned as she flipped through the phone book. "He's in Edinburgh—I remember he was there collecting material..."
"Isn't it a good thing?" Edward was reading a newspaper on the sofa. "Did he have a conflict with you? And I remember he was also a wizard, an old and ugly Irishman -"
"Who's Elvis?" Cohen asked, joining in the fun. "A bad guy?"
"He's not a bad guy, but he managed to survive after provoking your mother, which shows he's very strong." Edward joked, "He's an old wizard who stayed in Muggle society and works in the same newspaper as your mother.
"What's the part about offending Mom?" Cohen leaned over to Edward. "Stealing Mom's manuscript?"
"I remember that he once cast a Confusion Charm on the reviewer to annoy your mother, causing your mother to work overtime for several days to revise the manuscript." Edward recalled, "Simply because she was a member of the Burke family-"
"Because he doesn't even realize my last name is Norton, Rose Norton," Rose said. "And he hates the Burkes because Caractacus Burke once sold his great-grandfather a piece of poisoned parchment—and I never even met Caractacus Burke; the old man is dead."
"That fits my first impression of wizards." Cohen nodded. "They can hold grudges for centuries, even if they don't know why they have a grudge."
"If he disappears and doesn't show up in February, those jobs will fall to me," Rose said grimly. "And from what I know, he's always a procrastinator, so there must be a lot of unfinished work piled up."
"I guess the Ministry of Magic—wait…" Edward turned the Daily Prophet over and suddenly raised his voice, "Elvis McCoy?"
Cohen followed Edward's gaze and looked at the Daily Prophet that had just arrived this afternoon.
An extremely conspicuous word caught Cohen's attention.
[Old wizard Elvis McCoy was kidnapped, suspected to be the crazy behavior of the "Silver Key Gathering" organization]
Did Silver Key arrest someone? Or was it Rose's colleague?
Coincidence, or...
"Silver Key?" Edward recalled, "Why does it sound so familiar..."
"It's a crazy organization." Rose also put down the phone she had just dialed. There was no need to call anymore. "He should be dead."
"What is the Silver Key? Why do I feel like I turned into a Muggle just by sleeping for one night?" Coin asked. Of course, Coin knew about the Silver Key, but he didn't expect that Rose and Edward also knew about this pagan organization.
"Don't worry about it, don't investigate, don't get involved," Rose said seriously. "It's a group of dark wizards who act without any rules and regulations, and they have cult tendencies."
Laxatives, people at Hogwarts, are the objects of worship of a cult.
Cohen couldn't listen to Rose this time - because the Silver Key would definitely come looking for him.
"I won't, and you must not contact them..." Cohen warned, "I don't want to see my parents appear in the Daily Prophet as trafficked people."
"Of course not. I stay at home all day," Edward said. "Except when I go to Charing Cross Road to play D&D..."
"I'm busy with work and don't feel like being kidnapped." Rose hurried to the study upstairs - it was almost certain that Elvis would not be able to come back before February, or in other words, Elvis would never come back in this life. She had to take over the work as soon as possible to avoid not being able to finish it in the end.
"So..." Edward finished scanning the newspaper and whispered to Cohen, "Let's go see your dragon. I'm planning to give it some new food this time. Do you think it would like honey-fried meat?"
Edward had become familiar with Norbert by now—a giant dog that looked like a dragon, barked like a dragon, and breathed fire like a dragon. ("Next time I'm going to slip this thing into those kids' adventures," Edward had said when he noticed Norbert wagged his tail like a dog. "Guess they'll choose to pet his head or shoot a dragon-slaying arrow at his head first?")
Time passed quickly, and on January 8th, Cohen was taken to the station by Edward and boarded the train back to school.
Coincidentally, this time Cohen met Luna again.
"Merry Christmas." Luna said lightly.
"Christmas is over," Cohen kindly reminded.
"But the joy never dies," Luna said happily, "and my Christmas is delayed."
"Christmas can be postponed?" Cohen raised his eyebrows.
Jesus, could you please be born a few days later?
"I'm waiting for my dad to finish up; he's working on a big project," Luna said. "Christmas is the only time we're all together as a family, so I might have to postpone it until July—and I brought you a copy of The Quibbler, too."
Cohen noticed she brought two this time.
"How did you know you'd run into me again this time?" Cohen asked.
"A gift can always be given," Luna said. "Just keep it with you."
This time around, The Quibbler is a little different.
It devoted considerable space to a sort of cave fighting—something Cohen had never heard of.
On a moonless night, put a person and a monster into the same cave for a week. Either the person eats the monster, or the monster eats the person.
Regardless of who eats whom, some magic changes it, blending them... into something more suitable for sacrifice.
This stuff belongs in horror stories, not some cheesy The Quibbler.
"The Silver Key again..." Cohen saw the author's signature. "Luna, your father's recent big project—have you learned about its content?"
"My dad said it was a surprise," Luna said.
Out of consideration for his friend, Cohen didn't continue.
Telling Luna about Silver Key was not a good idea. Her father was either threatened by Silver Key's men or absorbed by Silver Key - or both.
Anyway, Cohen is going to do something big for Silver Key at the end of the month, so a first grader shouldn't get involved in this kind of thing.
It is unclear what the monster is, but people have confirmed that it is the old wizard Elvis McCoy.
And the place where Silver Key met Cohen was indeed in the cave, and it was on January 31st.
Cohen had seen that it was a waning moon that day, which met the premise of "on a moonless night".
As for the final sacrifice...
There is no moon on January 31st, but there are stars.
Sirius is one of the brightest stars in the night sky and is best observed on winter nights.
Sirius...monster...evil sacrifice...
Basilisk?
Cohen thought of a creature that seemed to fit the bill.
The basilisk was hatched from a toad's egg under the illumination of Sirius.
Coincidentally, the first creature mentioned in the Silver Key's prayer book is human, and the second is snake.
You see the deadly snake, and it hisses out fate.
This group of people wants to use the basilisk as a monster for cave fighting?
