Chapter 29. Celebration and New Newsletter
"Boom bang bang."
"Come here, who is it?"
Oliver had just finished dinner with his sister and returned to the apartment to rest. Before he had time to sit down, there was a knock on his door. With some complaints, Oliver first turned on the camera in the room and looked outside. After confirming who was knocking on the door, he quickly walked to his door and opened it.
"Karl? Why do you look so embarrassed?"
"I took a private job for that corporate idiot and made some money. I'm going to buy something to celebrate. I've already sent a message to Jack, he'll be here soon."
Carrying large and small bags of things, Karl walked into Oliver’s room, and after putting down the bag full of food and drinks, he took out a piece of something and handed it to Oliver: “Come on, have some steak first.”
"I just finished my meal, and you're forcing me to give you steak. You said you were going to take a private job for that company idiot, but why didn't you tell me and Jack?"
After Oliver took the steak from Carl, he realized it belatedly: "You went alone to do the task when we had something to do. You are too diligent."
"That's right, but the employer asked for only one person, so we negotiated. You know, I went to be a bodyguard for a while."
"bodyguard?"
Oliver stared at Karl for a few seconds and didn’t see any injuries on him: “It seems that the negotiations went smoothly.”
“It’s going really well.”
Carl thought about it and felt that what he said was not wrong. The employer had no objection, the other party had no objection, no one had any objection, and it was indeed going smoothly.
"Turn on the TV. Let me see what people in each neighborhood are doing today."
"What could it be?"
Although it costs extra euros to use the TV at home, my friend was willing to spend the money to watch Oliver. He connected his own device to the TV and started it. He said he had just finished his meal, but he honestly took a bite of the packaged steak in his hand.
"Hmm, this taste, this tenderness, it must be rib steak, this thing costs 20 euros a slice, I don't usually eat it."
"Indeed, so it can't be wasted."
"Of course I can't waste it. It's just one piece. I still have room in my stomach."
Halfway through his words, Oliver looked at the steak in his hand and found obvious cut marks in the corner.
"Wait a minute, Carl, you said it can't be wasted"
Oliver instantly recalled the difficulty he and Jack had in dealing with the food that Carl couldn't eat after taking a bite when they went to the Japanese restaurant before.
"You won't, just order them all again!"
Unbelievably, Oliver looked at the large and small bags of food left by Carl and began to doubt his life.
"No, I just felt that this steak should not be wasted, and the others were all newly ordered. Don't worry, most of what I bought were snacks. I still eat potato chips and the like, and I also have quite a few chocolate bars, but they are all chocolate with cocoa butter substitutes. I didn't buy any pure cocoa butter ones."
"I can rest assured that."
Oliver finished his steak in a few bites. Jack also arrived. He stopped by the Wild Wolf Bar and brought some French fries fried by Mrs. Wells.
"Oh, my favorite."
Seeing Carl, who had surpassed himself in liking his mother's cooking and was cheering and eating a big bag of French fries on the sofa, Jack smiled and found a seat on the sofa. As soon as he sat down, he felt a little uncomfortable on his butt. Looking down, he found that he was actually sitting on a small submachine gun.
"Dios mío (Oh my God), Saratoga submachine gun, Carl, where did you get it?"
"I picked it up after I killed a few guys from the Uzumaki Gang on the way. This one is yours."
"This is a small but powerful thing." Jack looked the submachine gun up and down with some reluctance to let it go, and like Oliver, he was a beat slower to react to Carl's words.
"What did you say you solved along the way?"
Carl had no choice but to tell Jack what he had just done, just as he had explained to Oliver.
"Is it that employer again?"
Jack pulled the bolt of the submachine gun and listened to the crisp sound, which he found extremely pleasant.
"Then it seems that it is indeed worth celebrating tonight."
"My room is quite big, it can accommodate you all. Just eat and drink. There is a vending machine here where you can buy some more food. However, the food in my room is only burritos and the meat in it is probably not what Carl likes."
As Oliver was speaking, he saw the TV screen that was broadcasting the daily news suddenly change and a new picture popped up.
"Hello everyone, welcome to the emergency report of News Channel 54. I am the host, Gillian Jordan. Just half an hour ago, an emergency occurred in the Kabuki Hall in Watson District. A cyber psychopath started a massacre in a restaurant. The exact death toll is not yet clear. The terrorist mobile team has gone there to suppress it. Residents of Kabukicho in Watson District and the surrounding areas are requested not to leave their homes for the time being and wait for the situation to be resolved."
"Cyberpsychosis?"
Jack looked at the flashing scenes on the screen and said, "This is the nth time this month."
“There are more and more crazy people.”
Oliver stared at the screen, but noticed that Carl beside him stopped eating French fries.
Carl stared closely at the restaurant flashing across the screen and frowned.
"I just finished shopping at the restaurant over there."
"Carl, is the restaurant you bought food from the one on the screen?"
"The patterns on the packaging are still inside the bag. I can't mistake it for this one."
Carl gave an accurate answer to Oliver's question, and then he picked up a piece of French fry and stuffed it into his mouth: "From the perspective of time, he was almost the same as me. If I had walked slower, I would have run into this cyber psychopath."
“Is this good luck?”
Jack looked at Carl's somewhat dissatisfied expression and didn't quite understand.
"It's good luck for me."
Karl thought about the waiters and cashiers who had a pretty good attitude and said, "It's a pity that I can't go to this restaurant again in the short term."
But there is nothing that can be done about this in Night City in 2075.
"drop."
Just as he was thinking about it, Carl received a strange call on the phone.
'Nonsense calls?'
Not wanting to be disturbed while eating, Karl hung up the phone, but the call came again right after.
The second time was unlikely to be a harassing call. Karl answered the call this time, and the next second, a slightly calm voice came over.
"Karl, huh? My name is Faraday, and here's a job that might interest you."
