Chapter 464 Transportation
“Do you know how dangerous this is?” Franky said angrily. “If the calculations are wrong, the entire island could crash!”
“I know,” Damon said calmly. “But for power, the risk is worthwhile.”
"You madman!" Karen gritted her teeth.
“Enough.” Borsalino stood up. “Take him back. The elders will decide what to do with him.”
The soldiers escorted Damon onto the aircraft. Before leaving, Damon took one last look at Borsalino.
“You are very strong,” he said. “Much stronger than me. However, if I could understand and master the power of the fruit as well as you do, perhaps the outcome would be different.”
“Perhaps,” Borsalino said calmly. “But strength isn’t everything. What you lack isn’t strength, but the right mindset.”
Damon fell silent, and then was taken away.
With Damon's defeat and capture, the residents of Stone Valley Town were finally freed from the reign of fear. Dawn Town was also spared a catastrophe. The residents of both towns spontaneously gathered in the square to cheer for the Straw Hat Pirates.
"hero!"
"Lavara's savior!"
Thank you!
People flocked to the Straw Hat Pirates, their eyes filled with gratitude and respect.
"No need for that," Luffy said, scratching his head sheepishly. "We just did what we were supposed to do."
“You’re too modest,” the mayor said excitedly, shaking Luffy’s hand. “You and your crew saved Lavala!”
“We’re going to have a big feast tonight!” a resident exclaimed.
"A banquet!" Luffy's eyes lit up immediately. "Great!"
Nami smiled helplessly: "You get excited whenever you hear about a banquet."
Soon, the entire town of Dawn was mobilized. Residents brought out their best ingredients and prepared the most sumptuous dishes. The square was brightly lit and filled with a festive atmosphere.
As night fell, the banquet officially began. The long table was laden with all kinds of delicacies, including roast meats, stews, bread, fruits, and drinks.
"Please enjoy!" the mayor greeted warmly. "This is the best we could offer!"
"I'm starting!" Luffy couldn't wait to start eating.
"It's so delicious!" he exclaimed, chewing the roasted meat with gusto.
Sanji was also savoring the food: "Although the cooking method is simple, the ingredients are very fresh. The vegetables from the sky are definitely different from those from the lower world."
"This wine is good!" Zoro raised his glass. "It has a unique fruity aroma."
“This is wine made with fruits from the sky,” a winemaker proudly explained. “It’s a recipe that’s been passed down for hundreds of years.”
At the banquet, music began to play, and people started to dance. The traditional dance of Lavala was elegant and unique, attracting the attention of the Straw Hat Pirates.
"Want to jump together?" a young girl shyly invited Zoro.
“I can’t dance,” Zoro refused outright.
"Then I'll teach you!" the girl said, taking Zoro's hand.
"Hey, hey." Zoro was reluctantly dragged into the dance floor.
Seeing this, Nami and Robin both laughed.
“Zoro’s dancing must be hilarious,” Nami said.
“It’s definitely something to look forward to,” Robin said with a smile.
Brooke took out his violin and began to play. The beautiful music blended with the traditional music of Lavala, creating a wonderful effect.
"That sounds great!" The children gathered around Brooke.
"Oh ho ho ho, thank you for the compliment." Brooke bowed gracefully.
Franky was surrounded by a group of craftsmen who were full of curiosity about the technology used to modify the Thousand Sunny.
"How did you install the pumice on the boat?" a craftsman asked.
“This is a technical job,” Franky explained proudly. “First, you need to accurately calculate the weight distribution of the ship.”
Chopper is treating those who were harmed by Damon. Although the blindness caused by Damon is difficult to cure, Chopper is still trying his best to examine them.
“While I cannot restore your sight,” Chopper said apologetically, “I can give you some medicine to relieve the pain in your eyes.”
“We are already very grateful, young doctor,” a blind soldier said gently. “At least Damon has been captured; our sacrifice was not in vain.”
Borsalino sat at the edge of the banquet, slowly sipping his drink and observing the lively scene.
Karen came over and sat down next to him.
“You’ve really gone to a lot of trouble,” Karen said. “If it weren’t for you, we don’t know how much we would have had to pay to stop Damon.”
“You’re welcome,” Borsalino said. “Besides, this battle has confirmed some things for me.”
"What's wrong?" Karen asked curiously.
“Regarding the regeneration mechanism of Devil Fruits,” Borsalino said, “it seems that even at a height of one thousand meters, the fruit can still regenerate. This indicates that the regeneration range of the fruit is larger than we thought.”
"What does this mean to you?" Karen didn't quite understand.
“This is a very important discovery for those who study Devil Fruits,” Borsalino explained.
They continued drinking, watching the joyous scene unfold before them. At that moment, Elder Alva and the other elders arrived in Dawn Town aboard their flying vehicles.
“Mr. Borsalino,” Alva approached and bowed deeply. “On behalf of all of Lavala, I thank you for your help.”
“Please get up.” Borsalino helped him up. “It’s what we should do.”
“Damon has been taken back to Lavala and is imprisoned in the most secure cell,” Elder Elena said. “We will give him a fair trial.”
“Hopefully this incident will make Lavala more united,” Robin said.
“Yes,” Alva said firmly. “This crisis has also shown us our shortcomings. We need to be more open and inclusive, rather than clinging to outdated ideas.”
“Well said,” Borsalino nodded.
The banquet lasted until late at night. As the moonlight shone on Lavara in the sky, the entire island was immersed in peace and joy.
The next morning, the Straw Hat Pirates woke up in Dawn Town. The residents had already prepared a sumptuous breakfast.
“What are your plans for today?” the mayor asked. “We’d like to stay in Lavalado for a few days,” Robin said. “There’s so much history and culture we want to learn.”
“Of course!” Elder Alva said. “You are now heroes of Lavala; you can go wherever you want.”
"That's great!" Luffy exclaimed excitedly. "I'm thinking of exploring everywhere!"
“Furthermore,” Elder Elena added, “I have granted you access to the library. It contains all of Lavala’s records from the past eight hundred years.”
"Really?" Robin's eyes lit up. "Thank you so much!"
“This is what you deserve,” Elder Cassius said. “You saved Lavala; this reward is insignificant.”
“Oh, right.” Franky remembered something. “The restrictions on the Thousand Sunny have been lifted, right?”
“Of course,” Alva laughed. “Your ship is now entirely under your own control.”
"That's great!" Franky exclaimed excitedly. "I'd like to make some improvements to it!"
“Then let’s go back to Lavala,” Karen said. “There are better facilities and resources there.”
The aircraft set off again, but this time the atmosphere was completely different. They were no longer monitored visitors, but respected friends.
When they arrived in Lavala, a large crowd had already gathered at the city gates. News spread quickly, and the entire city knew of the outsiders' victory over Damon.
"The heroes have arrived!"
Welcome back!
"Thank you for protecting Lavala!"
The residents lined the streets to welcome them, waving their arms and their faces beaming with genuine smiles. The Straw Hat Pirates walked among the crowd, feeling their warmth and hospitality.
"This feels so good," Nami exclaimed. "To be recognized and thanked by so many people."
“That’s the reward for doing the right thing,” Robin said gently.
They arrived at the square, where a temporary stage had been set up. Elder Alva stood on the stage and addressed the gathered crowd.
"Fellow countrymen of Lavala!" His voice resounded throughout the square. "Yesterday, we experienced a crisis. But with the help of our friends from outside, we overcame the threat and protected our home!"
The crowd erupted in enthusiastic applause and cheers.
“This incident has also made us realize,” Alva continued, “that Lavala cannot remain isolated forever. We need to understand the outside world, and we also need to let the outside world understand us.”
These words caused some commotion. For the Lavara people, who had been conservative for eight hundred years, this was a major shift.
“I know everyone is worried,” Alva said, “but please rest assured, we will not act rashly. We will slowly and cautiously build connections with the outside world.”
"And these friends from the lower realm," he pointed to the Straw Hat Pirates, "will be our first step in understanding the outside world."
The crowd cheered again.
Three days after defeating Damon, Franky was inspecting the hull of the Thousand Sunny. Although the flight modification was a success, he kept thinking about whether there were any details he could optimize.
“Mr. Franky?” a voice came from the dock.
Franky looked up and saw Tony, the craftsman he had met yesterday, followed by seven or eight people in work clothes, who all looked to be craftsmen from Lavala.
"Hey, Tony!" Franky waved and greeted him. "What's up?"
“It’s like this,” Tony said somewhat embarrassedly, “a few of us craftsmen have discussed it and would like to ask you for a favor.”
"What kind of help?" Franky jumped off the boat and asked curiously.
“We would like to ask you to guide us in some techniques,” said an older craftsman. “Yesterday I saw the spaceship you modified; the design concept and technical skills far surpass our level.”
“And those mechanical principles you mentioned earlier, we’ve never heard of them before,” another craftsman added. “We hope to learn from you.”
"Oh?" Franky's interest was piqued. "What do you want to learn?"
“It’s mainly about the power system and transmission,” Tony said. “Lavara’s mechanical technology has stagnated for a long time. We’ve been using technologies passed down from our ancestors, but we lack innovation.”
"How long has it been stalled?" Franky asked.
“About three hundred years,” Tony said with a wry smile. “Since we isolated ourselves from the world, there has been no technological exchange with outsiders. Our machines are practical, but their design concepts are outdated.”
"Three hundred years?" Franky exclaimed in surprise. "That definitely needs an upgrade."
“So we’d like to ask for your help,” the older craftsman said earnestly. “We don’t need you to teach us all the secrets, just some basic directions for improvement will suffice.”
Franky pondered for a moment. Looking into the sincere eyes of these craftsmen, he recalled his own youth, learning shipbuilding from his master Tom. Isn't the passing down and sharing of skills part of the spirit of craftsmanship?
“Sure!” Franky readily agreed. “I’d be happy to help! But I have one condition.”
"What are the conditions?" Tony asked nervously.
“Don’t call me ‘sir,’ just call me Franky,” Franky grinned. “We’re both craftsmen, no need for so much formality.”
The craftsmen all laughed, and the atmosphere immediately relaxed.
“Then take me to your workshop!” Franky said. “Let me see your equipment and technology.”
The group made their way to the artisan district of Lavala. This area housed all the island's workshops, including blacksmith shops, carpentry workshops, and mechanics. The air was thick with the sounds of metal clanging and wood cutting, exuding an industrial atmosphere.
“This is our main machine shop.” Tony opened a door.
The workshop was spacious, filled with various tools and equipment. Franky could tell at a glance that although the equipment was well-maintained, its design was rather old-fashioned.
“This is our main production equipment,” Tony explained. “It’s mainly used to manufacture parts for aircraft and everyday machinery.”
Frankie began to examine the equipment closely. He found that although the artisans in Lavala used outdated techniques, their fundamentals were solid. They were skilled in metalworking and wood processing, but lacked some modern concepts.
"What do you most want to improve right now?" Franky asked.
The craftsmen looked at each other, then Tony said, "Transportation."
“Transportation?” Franky repeated.
“Yes,” the older craftsman explained. “The main means of transportation on the island now are those flying machines, but they are inefficient and have high maintenance costs. Each flying machine requires a lot of light stone, and they are very laborious to operate.”
“I’ve seen your aircraft.” Franky nodded. “There’s definitely a lot of room for improvement.”
"Can you help us improve it?" Tony asked expectantly.
“Of course!” Franky rolled up his sleeves. “Let me draw a design first.”
He picked up paper and pen and began to draw rapidly. The craftsmen gathered around him, watching his every stroke intently.
"The biggest problem with your current aircraft is its propulsion system," Franky explained as he drew. "It relies entirely on the buoyancy of pumice stones, lacking active propulsion. Therefore, it can only float passively, with very poor maneuverability."
