Chapter 452 Irregular Heartbeat
Chapter 452 Irregular Heartbeat
"You know about Sky Island?" Luffy asked excitedly.
“Of course I know,” Oliver said with a smile. “As the curator of the Navigator’s Library, I’ve studied all sorts of sea legends. Sky Islands are rare, but there are indeed records of them.”
“Really?” Robin exclaimed in surprise. “Where are those records?”
“Please follow me.” Oliver led them deeper into the library. “The information on special marine phenomena is all stored in the Special Snow Zone.”
They came to a room on the second floor, where the bookshelves were filled with many books and scrolls that looked very old.
“These are precious records left by navigators throughout history,” Oliver explained. “Among them are some eyewitness accounts of the Sky Islands.”
“A sighting report?” Borsalino noticed the keyword. “So, someone really did see the island in the sky?”
“Yes,” Oliver nodded. “Although not many, there are some credible records.”
He pulled several old nautical logbooks from the bookshelf. "These are eyewitness accounts recorded by different navigators over the past two hundred years."
Robin eagerly flipped to one of the journals and began to read it carefully. The others also gathered around, each picking up a journal and starting to look at it.
"This record says that 75 years ago, a merchant ship captain saw a huge island floating in the clouds in the southwestern sea," Sauron read from the logbook.
“I have a similar record here,” Brooke said. “It’s from 150 years ago, saying that under certain weather conditions, a dark shadow could be seen above the clouds.”
“These descriptions,” Robin exclaimed excitedly, “match Lavala’s features perfectly!”
"Lavana?" Oliver asked curiously. "You mean the legendary Lavana Island?"
"You know Lavala?" Luffy looked at the old man in surprise.
“Of course,” Oliver smiled. “It’s a very old legend. It’s said that Lavala Island split into two parts 800 years ago; one part sank into the sea, and the other flew into the sky.”
“You know so much detail!” Chopper said admiringly.
“It’s my duty,” Oliver said modestly. “As a librarian, I must be familiar with all sorts of maritime legends and history.”
"Do you know where Lavala is in the sky right now?" Luffy asked the crucial question directly.
Oliver pondered for a moment, then said, "Based on sightings over the years, I've tried to deduce its trajectory."
"Speculation?" Borsalino's interest was piqued. "Can you tell us?"
“Please wait a moment.” Oliver walked to a cabinet and took out a large nautical chart. “This is a speculative chart I drew based on various records.”
The nautical chart is marked with many red dots, each with a date and a brief description next to it.
“These red dots are historically recorded sighting locations of Sky Islands,” Oliver explained, pointing to the nautical chart. “I connected them chronologically, trying to find patterns.”
If you observe the distribution of those points carefully, you can indeed see a certain movement trajectory.
"It appears to be moving primarily in a southwest direction," Nami analyzed. "And its speed seems to be related to the upper-level wind direction."
“That’s right.” Oliver nodded approvingly. “Islands in the sky move with high-altitude air currents. Based on my deduction, it should drift along a specific wind belt.”
“Where should it be now?” Robin asked eagerly.
Oliver moved his finger across the nautical chart, finally stopping at one spot.
“Based on recent sightings and wind direction data, I estimate it should be in this area now,” he said, pointing to a section of sea on the nautical chart. “Approximately 800 nautical miles southwest of us.”
“800 nautical miles,” Luffy calculated. “That’s not too far!”
“But the problem is,” Oliver cautioned, “that’s just speculation and may not be accurate. Besides, the weather conditions in that area are quite harsh, with frequent strong winds and torrential rain.”
“That is a problem,” Borsalino said thoughtfully. “But having a general direction is better than searching blindly.”
“There’s one more thing to note,” Oliver continued. “Even once you get to that area, Sky Island isn’t easy to see. It’s usually hidden above the clouds and can only be seen from below under specific weather conditions.”
"Special weather conditions?" Nami asked. "For example?"
“For example, on clear, cloudless days, or when the cloud cover is thin,” Oliver explained. “Also, it’s easier to observe at dusk and dawn because of the angle of the light.”
“I see.” Robin noted down this important information. “These are all very valuable clues.”
“Could I make a copy of this nautical chart?” Nami asked Oliver. “It will be very helpful for our voyage.”
“Of course,” Oliver said generously. “I hope you can find the legendary Sky Lavala. If you succeed, remember to come back and tell me the details.”
"Definitely!" Luffy excitedly assured him.
They stayed in the library a while longer, continuing to research relevant materials and taking notes on all the useful information. By the time they left the library, it was already evening.
"What a great find!" Luffy exclaimed happily. "We not only learned the general direction, but also how to observe!"
“Yes,” Robin said, equally pleased. “Mr. Oliver has been a great help.”
“Now we need to meet with the procurement team and see how they’re doing,” Borusalino suggested.
They found Nami and her group at the agreed-upon location in front of a restaurant.
"You're back!" Nami was delighted to see them. "All the supplies are ready and we're waiting for you!"
"We've made a major discovery too!" Luffy eagerly shared. "We know the approximate location of Sky Lavala!"
"Really?" Sanji asked in surprise.
Everyone sat down in the restaurant, enjoying dinner and sharing their findings. Everyone was very excited after hearing about the library team's discoveries.
"So, our next stop is that area of water 800 nautical miles to the southwest?" Franky confirmed.
“That’s right!” Luffy nodded. “Although we still need luck to see Sky Island, at least we have a clear goal!”
“Let’s set off first thing tomorrow morning!” Chopper suggested.
“Don’t rush,” Borsalino said slowly. “Franky’s hull repairs will take time, and we also need a good rest. Let’s stay here another day and get ourselves into top shape.”
“Uncle Kizaru is right,” Nami agreed. “Adequate preparation is essential for a successful voyage.”
"Moreover, the weather in that area is severe, and we need to be prepared for bad weather," Sanji added.
"Then it's settled." Luffy was a little impatient, but he understood everyone's considerations. "We'll rest on the island tomorrow, and set off the day after!"
“Oh, right.” Nami suddenly remembered something. “While we were shopping on the island, I heard there’s a lively night market here at night. Want to check it out?” “A night market?” Luffy’s eyes lit up immediately. “I want to go!”
After dinner, the Straw Hat Pirates decided to visit the night market Nami had mentioned. The night market on Canaveral Island truly lived up to its reputation; the entire street was lined with various stalls selling all sorts of goods.
"Wow! So much delicious food!" Luffy's eyes lit up as he looked at the various food stalls.
“The handicrafts here are also very exquisite.” Robin stopped in front of a stall, admiring the seashell ornaments on display.
"Miss, these are specialties from our island!" the stall owner introduced enthusiastically. "They're all made from deep-sea seashells, and each one is unique!"
“It’s really beautiful.” Robin picked up a spiral-shaped seashell pendant and examined it closely under the light.
Zoro stopped at another stall, where various swords were displayed.
"These knives are well-crafted," he commented. "While they don't reach the level of famous swords, they are quite excellent for ordinary weapons."
"You have excellent taste, sir!" The stall owner, a middle-aged blacksmith, said with pride. "These are all handcrafted by me! They may not be famous brands, but the quality is absolutely guaranteed!"
Sanji was drawn to a spice stall. Spices of various colors were neatly arranged in wooden boxes, and the air was filled with a mixed aroma.
"This is saffron from the South China Sea, and this is star anise from the East China Sea," the stall owner introduced. "These are all the freshest spices!"
“Give me some saffron and this,” Sanji said, selecting. “These spices are perfect for seafood dishes.”
Franky lingered at a mechanical parts stall. "Oh! This gear design is very creative!" He picked up a sophisticated mechanical component and examined it closely.
"Look over there!" Chopper pointed to a performance area in the distance. "There are people performing acrobatics!"
A group of acrobats were performing thrilling high-altitude stunts, surrounded by a large audience who cheered from time to time.
"Wow, that's amazing!" Brooke exclaimed. "That person did three somersaults in the air!"
"Heh, this is nothing to us," Usopp said smugly. "Every one of us in the pirate crew can do even better!"
The night market had a relaxed and cheerful atmosphere, filled with laughter and chatter. The Straw Hat Pirates strolled around, buying things as they went, and each of them found something that interested them.
"This is such a nice night." Nami was in a good mood after buying a pretty bracelet. "It's rare to have such a relaxing shopping trip."
“Yes.” Sanji lit a cigarette. “No need to worry about the Navy chasing us, no need to face danger, we can just enjoy life leisurely.”
“But these days are short-lived for us,” Borsalino said slowly. “After a day of rest tomorrow, we’ll begin a new adventure.”
"This is the life of a pirate!" Luffy grinned. "Adventure and danger are the norm!"
Just as everyone continued strolling through the night market, a commotion suddenly arose ahead. The crowd seemed to be avoiding something, and they all retreated.
"What's going on?" Zoro looked ahead warily.
"It looks like someone has collapsed." Robin squinted as he observed.
They hurried over and saw an old man lying on the ground, his body twitching slightly, his face as pale as paper. The old man looked to be about seventy years old, dressed in simple but clean clothes, and carrying a cloth bag filled with vegetables.
What was chilling was that a large crowd had gathered around, but not a single person stepped forward to help. They simply watched from a distance, whispering amongst themselves.
“Isn’t that old Victor?” a middle-aged woman whispered.
“It seems like he’s having another episode,” another person responded.
"Let's hurry up and leave, don't cause trouble." Someone started backing away.
"Why isn't anyone helping?" Chopper asked anxiously, looking at the old man.
"Maybe they're afraid of being scammed," a passerby said indifferently. "These days, helping others can actually get you into trouble."
“Besides, that old man has a really strange temper,” another person added. “He usually ignores everyone, and now that he’s fallen ill, who’s going to care about him?”
Hearing these words, Luffy frowned. He couldn't understand these people's thinking at all—how could they just stand by and do nothing when an old man clearly needed help?
"Chopper!" Luffy shouted without hesitation, then quickly walked to the old man's side, squatted down to check the situation.
"Luffy!" Nami called out worriedly, but Luffy had already helped the old man up.
"Coming!" Chopper immediately ran over, always carrying a medkit with him.
When people around saw someone coming to help, instead of getting closer, they backed away, and some even looked on with expressions of watching a good show.
“These outsiders don’t know how formidable old Victor is,” someone muttered. “They’ll get what’s coming to them soon enough.”
Ignoring the gossip, Chopper immediately began checking the old man's condition. He lifted the old man's eyelids to check his pupils, then felt his pulse.
"How is it?" Sanji squatted down and asked.
"Weak pulse, rapid breathing," Chopper quickly assessed. "Looks like a heart attack, we need to get this done immediately!"
He took out a stethoscope from his medical kit and listened carefully to the old man's heartbeat.
“Sure enough, an irregular heartbeat,” Chopper said seriously. “And there might be symptoms of dehydration and hypoglycemia.”
“What do you need?” Robin asked.
"Have him lie flat on his back with his head slightly elevated," Chopper instructed. "Sanji, get me some sugar water or honey water!"
"Right away!" Sanji immediately ran towards the nearest beverage stand.
Robin used the power of the Flower-Flower Fruit to grow a pillow made of flower petals under the old man's head, making him more comfortable.
Chopper took a vial of medicine from his medical kit and carefully gave it to the old man. "This is a cardiac stimulant; it will temporarily stabilize his heartbeat."
"Is there anything else you need?" Nami asked with concern.
“He needs to be kept quiet; don’t crowd around.” Chopper looked up at the surrounding crowd. “Please step back a bit and give the patient enough air!”
But instead of backing down, some of the onlookers showed mocking smiles.
"Stop pretending to be a good guy." Someone mocked. "You'll see how powerful he is when the old man wakes up."
“That’s right, minding your own business,” another person chimed in.
