Chapter 451 Rare Phenomenon
Chapter 451 Rare Phenomenon
"An island in the sky," Nami gazed at the sky, imagining that mysterious place. "It's truly something to look forward to."
"We'll definitely find it!" Luffy said confidently. "And then we'll meet those Lavala people in the sky!"
“Hopefully they still retain their ancient civilization and traditions,” Robin said expectantly. “That would be a major archaeological discovery.”
After the Thousand Sunny surfaced, an atmosphere of excitement filled the deck. The discovery at the underwater temple had thrilled everyone, especially the news that the other half of Lavala existed in the sky, which made the adventurers eager to try their luck.
"I know how to get to Sky Island!" Luffy suddenly jumped up excitedly. "We've been to Sky Island before, using the Skyfall Current!"
"A surging ocean current?" Robin looked at him with some doubt.
"Yeah, right!" Luffy waved his arms, as if recalling a scene from back then. "It was a super strong current that could send a ship flying into the sky! It was incredibly exciting!"
“That’s true.” Nami nodded in confirmation. “We used the Sky Current to reach Sky Island back then. If we can find a similar current this time, we might actually be able to reach Lavala in the sky.”
"Great!" Chopper jumped up excitedly. "Let's hurry and find the Skyfall Current!"
"Wait a minute." Nami took out a nautical chart and began to carefully study the surrounding sea. "A towering current doesn't just appear anywhere; it requires specific geographical and climatic conditions."
Everyone gathered around Nami, watching her mark and calculate on the nautical chart. As the ship's navigator, Nami's knowledge of the ocean and climate far surpassed that of the others.
"Several key conditions are required for the formation of a towering ocean current," Nami explained while drawing a diagram. "First, there must be strong geothermal activity on the seabed, capable of heating the seawater and generating powerful updrafts."
“Secondly, the surrounding ocean currents need to form a specific convergence pattern,” she continued. “Finally, specific air pressure conditions are also required.”
"Does our current location meet these conditions?" Sanji asked.
Nami carefully examined the nautical chart and meteorological instruments, her brows furrowing deeper and deeper.
"Not too optimistic," she finally said, shaking her head. "The sea we're in now is relatively calm, with inactive seabed geology, and the surrounding ocean currents don't have the conditions to form a powerful surge."
"What should we do then?" Chopper asked disappointedly.
"We can go find areas with towering currents!" Luffy remained optimistic. "That's exactly what we looked for back then!"
“The problem is, the nearest area that could potentially generate a supercurrent,” Nami measured the distance on the nautical chart, “is at least 1500 nautical miles away. And even then, I can’t guarantee there really is a supercurrent there.”
“1500 nautical miles,” Franky calculated. “At our speed, it would take at least a week to sail.”
“And even if you get there, you might not encounter the towering currents,” Nami added. “This phenomenon occurs irregularly; sometimes you have to wait several months.”
“A few months?!” Chopper exclaimed. “That’s too long!”
Everyone fell silent. Although they had found a clue to Sky Lavala, how to get there had become a thorny problem.
"Are there any other ways?" Zoro asked. "Besides the Skyfall Current."
“Theoretically,” Nami pondered, “if there were a sufficiently strong updraft, or some special natural phenomenon, it might be possible to send us into the high altitude.”
"For example?" Sanji pressed.
“For example, the updrafts of tornadoes and typhoons, or certain special marine phenomena,” Nami listed. “But these are all very dangerous and uncontrollable.”
"How about we just fly up there?" Luffy suggested. "I can launch the ship up like a rubber slingshot!"
"Luffy, are you serious?" Nami looked at him helplessly. "Even if you're incredibly strong, you can't possibly launch the entire ship that high. And what if it falls down halfway?"
“That’s definitely too dangerous,” Franky shook his head. “The Thousand Sunny is sturdy, but it can’t withstand a fall from such a height.”
Just as everyone was struggling with how to reach the sky, Borsalino, who had been quietly thinking on the sidelines, spoke up.
"Gentlemen," he said slowly, "I think what we need most right now is not to rush into finding a way to get to space, but to calm down and plan carefully."
Everyone turned to look at him. As a former admiral, Borsalino's strategic vision and judgment had always been highly trusted.
“Uncle Kizaru is right,” Robin nodded in agreement. “We definitely need more information and preparation.”
"What do you mean?" Luffy asked, somewhat puzzled.
Borsalino walked to the nautical chart and pointed to the surrounding sea, saying, "First of all, we know too little about Sky Lavara. We only know it might be in the sky, but its exact location, altitude, and whether it even still exists are all uncertain."
“Secondly,” he continued, “even if we find a way to reach high altitudes, we don’t know what we’ll encounter at that altitude. Thin air, extremely low temperatures, strong winds—these are all potential dangers.”
“And one more thing,” Borsalino said, looking at Nami. “How are our supplies?”
Nami checked the supplies list and said, "Food and fresh water are sufficient, but some important nautical supplies need to be replenished, especially consumables like ropes and canvas."
“The Thousand Sunny also needs maintenance,” Franky added. “The underwater voyage just now put some stress on the hull, and I need to inspect and repair some parts.”
“So my suggestion is,” Borsalino concluded, “that we first find a suitable island to rest and replenish our supplies, while also gathering more information about the Sky Islands. Knowing your enemy is half the battle.”
"I see." Luffy nodded, somewhat disappointed but understanding Borsalino's considerations. "Then let's go find an island!"
"Are there any suitable islands nearby?" Sanji asked Nami.
Nami began studying the nautical chart again, carefully searching the surrounding waters.
“Here.” She pointed to a larger marker on the chart. “Canavera Island, about 80 nautical miles from where we are now, is one of the largest islands in this area.”
“Canavera Island?” Robin repeated the name. “It sounds familiar.”
“This is an important trading port,” Nami explained. “The island has a bustling town with a full range of supplies. And…”
"And what?" Zoro asked.
“And there’s a famous navigator’s library there.” Nami’s eyes lit up. “It’s said to have a vast collection of information about the ocean, climate, and various sea legends.”
"The Navigator's Library?" Robin immediately became interested. "There might be records about the Sky Isles there!"
“That’s right.” Nami nodded. “If there really is a floating island in the sky, someone should have witnessed it over the past 800 years. Those records might even be kept in the library.” “Great!” Luffy exclaimed excitedly. “Then let’s go to Canaveral Island! We can rest and resupply, and also find clues!”
“That’s killing two birds with one stone,” Chopper said happily.
“Then it’s settled,” Borsalino said with satisfaction. “Adjust course and head to Canavera Island.”
Under Nami's command, the Thousand Sunny changed course and headed towards Canaveral Island. The sea remained calm, and the weather was clear—perfect for sailing.
"If it's 80 nautical miles, we should arrive around this afternoon," Nami calculated. "Everyone can rest for a bit and get ready."
But Luffy clearly couldn't rest. He excitedly paced back and forth on the deck, constantly gazing ahead.
"Can't you just be quiet for a bit?" Zoro asked, somewhat exasperated. "It'll be several more hours before we get there."
"I'm so excited!" Luffy grinned. "The thought of finding a clue to Sky Island soon is driving me crazy!"
“Speaking of which,” Sanji lit a cigarette, “what do you think the Lavala people in the sky would look like?”
"They're probably similar to ordinary people, right?" Chopper guessed. "After all, they're human too."
“But after 800 years of isolation,” Robin said thoughtfully, “their culture and way of life may have developed unique characteristics.”
"Could your body have changed from living at high altitudes for so long?" Franky asked curiously. "Like, adapting to the thin air?"
“That’s possible,” Borsalino nodded. “Organic organisms evolve to adapt to their environment.”
“No matter what they become, as long as they maintain the civilized traditions of Lavara, that's fine,” Robin said expectantly. “They must have preserved a lot of valuable historical knowledge.”
“I’m more curious about what they eat.” Sanji, as a chef, always has unique concerns. “It must be difficult to grow crops in the sky, right?”
“If the soil on the island becomes lighter due to the pumice, it might actually be more suitable for agriculture?” Nami speculated. “Plant roots wouldn’t need to exert as much effort to grow.”
“That makes sense!” Franky agreed. “Besides, there should be more rain and sunshine at high altitudes.”
Everyone was excitedly discussing the various possibilities of the sky's lava, and time slipped by unnoticed. When the sun reached its zenith, a dark spot finally appeared on the distant horizon.
"I see it!" Zoro shouted from the lookout tower. "An island ahead!"
Everyone rushed to the bow of the ship, gazing at the distant island. As they drew closer, the island's outline gradually became clearer.
Canavera Island is indeed very large, with lush greenery and views of rolling mountains and densely packed buildings. The port area is particularly busy, with all sorts of ships docked there.
"What a lively place." Nami observed the port. "It seems that trade here is indeed very developed."
“And the security should be quite good.” Borsalino noticed the orderly patrols at the port. “It’s an orderly town.”
The Thousand Sunny slowly sailed into the harbor. Compared to the other docked ships, the Thousand Sunny's design was particularly unique, immediately attracting a lot of attention.
"That ship is so peculiar!" People on the dock pointed at the Thousand Sunny and discussed it animatedly.
"The bow of the ship is shaped like a lion, how majestic!"
"Who are those people? They don't look like ordinary businessmen."
The Straw Hat Pirates were used to this kind of attention. After docking their ship, they prepared to disembark and enter the town.
“Let’s split up,” Nami suggested. “Some of us will go buy supplies, and the rest of us will go to the library to look up information.”
“Good idea,” Borsalino agreed. “It’s more efficient that way.”
“Sanji, Chopper, and I will go buy food and medical supplies,” Nami instructed. “Franky will go find ship repair materials.”
“Robin and I are going to the library,” Luffy said immediately. “I want to find clues as soon as possible!”
“Zoro and Brook, come to the library too,” Nami continued, assigning tasks. “The more people, the faster we can find information.”
“And what about me?” Usopp asked.
“You’ll come with us to do the shopping,” Nami said. “We need someone to help carry things.”
“Understood.” Usopp nodded.
“Mr. Borsalino, where do you want to go?” Robin asked.
“I’ll go to the library with you,” Borsalino said slowly. “I’m also very interested in those ancient records.”
After assigning tasks, everyone split into two groups. The purchasing group, led by Nami, headed towards the town's commercial district. The library group, guided by Robin, went to the Navigator's Library.
The towns on Canaveral are well-organized, with wide, clean streets lined with various shops and residences. The bustling crowds demonstrate its prosperity.
"This town seems nice." Luffy looked around. "It's even more lively than Crystal Harbor."
“Because this is an important trading hub,” Robin explained. “Many merchant ships stop here to resupply.”
"Is that the Navigator's Library?" Zoro asked, pointing to a magnificent building in the distance.
It was a three-story stone building, its exterior walls decorated with exquisite reliefs depicting various nautical scenes. Above the main entrance hung a huge sign: Navigators' Library.
“How magnificent!” Brooke exclaimed. “It looks very historically significant.”
They entered the library, which was even larger than it appeared from the outside. Rows of tall bookshelves were filled with all kinds of books and documents, and a faint scent of books filled the air.
“Welcome.” An elderly man wearing glasses stood up from behind the counter. “I’m Oliver, the manager here. How can I help you?”
“Hello,” Robin said politely. “We’d like to look up some records about the Sky Islands.”
“Sky Islands?” Oliver’s eyes lit up. “You’re interested in that? That’s a very rare phenomenon.”
