Chapter 136: The Witch in the Swamp
"If this is really a trap set by some damn thing, it's too bold!" Sera covered her ears in annoyance. "Ron, let's find that guy and kill him! No matter what it is - this is simply a naked provocation!"
"But what if this existence is much more powerful than us..." Ron hesitated. It was hard not to be suspicious of the other party's blatant provocation.
"If there really was something very powerful here, my teacher would have sensed it and defeated it long ago," Exuri flew up to confirm their current location, "The only reason he still kept this creature may be because it does not pose a threat yet."
"It sounds like an old lady calling for help," Victoria took off her weapon and shield, "Let's go check it out."
The team followed the sound through several layers of woods. When the layers of treetops completely blocked out the sunlight, they also saw the culprit who made the strange cry for help - an old woman in simple and plain clothes.
She seemed to be in trouble: under her feet, the bottomless swamp was making her sink deeper and deeper; and above her head, a large number of ravens were either perched on the surrounding branches or circling above her head, as if waiting for a feast that would accompany the old woman's death.
"Save me, kind travelers!" The old woman's eyes lit up immediately after seeing Ron and the others. "Oh my God, I really didn't know there would be adventurers passing by here!"
"Pull me up quickly and drive away these annoying birds! Then I can repay you for your kindness!"
"She's sinking at a speed that doesn't match her apparent size." The treasure chest monster on the cart muttered.
"A deformed creature like us, or an illusion." The Mimicry reminded.
As one of the most experienced and well-known monsters, they are experts in setting traps and pits. How could they fall for such an evil trick?
As for Ron and the others, they had long guessed that this seemingly harmless "woman" was not an easy person to deal with, and they would not easily believe her words.
"Snap", Axuri grabbed a stick and threw it at the old woman's head, making a dull sound. Then another branch.
"Hey! You ugly, dirty, evil, disgusting lizard boy!"
The old woman's expression changed immediately: "You reptiles, are you only capable of kicking someone when he's down?!"
"It's not an illusion," the young dragon tilted its head to look at Ron, "It's quite a lot of effort to actually come out and stage such a good show."
“What?! This is not a good show, you slow-witted cub!” The old woman bared her teeth and cursed while struggling in the swamp, “I am really trapped here, pull me out quickly!”
“Do you think we will believe you?” Exuri laughed sarcastically. It flapped its wings and flew over, circling above the old woman’s head with the ravens. “Forget it. What kind of elderly humanoid creature would appear in a place like this? Even young and strong men dare only wander around the periphery of the Delusion Land!”
The old woman did not answer him. She stretched out a pair of skinny hands with long nails and tried to grab the young dragon, but such a violent action only made her sink deeper and deeper.
"No - you can't do this!" The old woman screamed in fear. Seeing that it was hopeless to ask for help from the young dragon, she turned her attention to Ron - the young man looked like the leader of this team. "Good man, you are not as heartless as an evil black dragon, right? Save an old woman like me, I am forced to appear here!" "I think you should at least show your true identity, so that it can be regarded as a 'sincere' call for help," Ron reached out and stroked the shell of the treasure chest monster, "You heard what it said just now, right?"
"W-what?!" the old woman was shocked. "Are you serious? You would rather listen to a beast who can barely speak the Common Tongue than to an old woman whose life is hanging by a thread? Are you crazy? Or something else... I don't know, a freak?"
"Then it seems we have no choice but to leave you here," Ron shrugged and pretended to turn around and leave. "I don't know if you know that your disguise and performance are so poor that we have determined from the beginning that you are not an ordinary person."
"If you still intend to continue the performance, we will not accompany you."
"Okay, okay," the old woman stared at Ron. After a long while, she compromised. "Then don't be scared, little guys. My beauty can eclipse the entire Delusion Land!"
A dark green light enveloped the old woman. When the light faded, her originally frail and short stature quickly expanded to almost double its size. Her shrunken face was covered with torn long hair, her pockmarked skin had scary moles and tumors, and her thin fingertips had claws that could easily cut through flesh. Her skin also took on a terrifying blue-gray color.
But its current appearance seems very miserable, with scars all over its body from being whipped and bitten. Many of the wounds have become festered and even maggoty due to not healing for a long time or repeated damage.
On her head, there seemed to be some headdress made of bones and withered petals, but now there are only some debris and excrement of living things on her head, making her look dirty and smelly.
But perhaps this is actually a manifestation of beauty for this creature - this is a hag, a hateful and selfish monster that regards ugliness as beauty.
"I'd rather go back to Carolina than see this kind of thing." Sylvia covered her mouth and nose in disgust. For a vampire who was born to pursue and possess elegance and beauty, she felt that she was doing an injustice to her eyes even by looking at this creature.
"I knew it. Now do you understand why I want to appear in disguise?" The witch laughed sinisterly. "Mortals like you don't have eyes to appreciate beauty!"
"Okay, I've done what you asked young man. Now, pull me out!"
"A witch?" Ron looked at her in disbelief. "How did you end up like this?"
This was so true that he couldn't help but believe it: this monster was not acting at all, it seemed that she was really forced to sink into this swamp!
But what kind of existence could turn a witch into this? What about her terrifying power? What about her bizarre magic?
"There's no time to explain!" the witch screamed, "Pull me up quickly, I'm really going to sink!"
