Chapter 32 Is she really a genius?
When Song Jinhe returned indoors, Zhang Yi had already blended the soybeans that had been soaked the night before into soy milk using a high-speed blender. This was their breakfast today, served with steamed buns and sweet potatoes, though unfortunately there were no fried dough sticks.

Frying dough sticks is both oily and time-consuming. Even if they don't lack supplies right now, it's not a good idea to sit in the yard and set up a pot to fry dough sticks. The zombies wandering outside would be tempted to come up and kick the pot over.

Once the diesel fuel runs out, I wonder if I can find a millstone, catch a free zombie that won't complain of getting tired, and bring it back to grind it. Then I can have soy milk to drink, tofu pudding to eat, and even stir-fry the soybean residue.

Zombies are not as easy to find as diesel fuel. Just hang some leftover entrails from the last time you killed a wild boar in front of it, and you can activate it.

After hearing Song Jinhe's idea, Cheng Yan didn't swallow the steamed bun in his mouth; only one thought occupied his mind—

Is she really a genius? People say money can make the devil turn the millstone, but she doesn't spend a penny and instead catches zombies to turn the millstone.

Is it safe to eat tofu made by zombies?
Jiang Shi'an also said that the idea was very good and that they would try it next time.

I had just finished breakfast when I heard knocking on the door for help. They seemed to be calling Zhang Yi's name.

"Zhang Yi, it's me. Open the door, please open the door!"

Ruan Jingying's eyes were bloodshot, her voice was hoarse, and she pounded on the door repeatedly with her clenched fists.

"Shen Fei and his gang are inhuman! They robbed my family of their supplies. My mother was killed by zombies while trying to save me. I have nothing left, and I haven't eaten for a day. There are zombies outside. Can you please open the door and let me in?"

A few days ago, she moved in next door. Shen Fei and his family said that she and her mother, two women, had a hard time, and that living together would allow them to take care of each other.

For the first two days, everyone got along well, and she thought she had found someone to rely on.

They were even more convinced that Zhang Yi was trying to sow discord that day and couldn't stand seeing anyone treat her well.

She told Shen Fei about it, and even felt secretly pleased when Shen Li showed that her brother looked down on those women outside.

Even though her father was bitten to death by zombies on the way to the villa area, it was Zhang Yi who encouraged her to cheer up and asked Cheng Yan to treat her mother.

Not long after she got together with Shen Fei, the family's attitude changed.

Shen Li treated her like a servant, and made sarcastic remarks to her mother. After she said a few words, Shen Fei slapped her across the face.

She couldn't believe this was the man who said he would take good care of her. She wanted to move back, but Shen Li and her husband Yu Guang withheld the supplies she had brought, saying that they had all been eaten in the past few days and that she was practically throwing herself at them.

In the end, the mother and daughter were kicked out.

"Zhang Yi, I'm sorry, I should have trusted you that day. You wouldn't have watched me die out there, would you?"

Zhang Yi frowned as she stood behind the door. "I can't help you. This isn't my house. I'm just staying here temporarily. It's not safe outside. You should go home right away."

"Aren't you friends with them? Can you go and talk to them for me? I can't survive without supplies!" Ruan Jingying cried again as she spoke.

"Whether you survive or not is your business, it has nothing to do with us." Song Jinhe was afraid that her crying would attract zombies and endanger them, so she wanted her to leave quickly.

Ruan Jingying stopped speaking and just cried. Seeing that the person inside was unmoved, she spoke again in despair, "I know, I'm sorry, Zhang Yi, I've put you in a difficult position. You clearly reminded me."

As she spoke, she looked at the door, which remained tightly shut, and her heart sank to the bottom.

Ruan Jingying went to other houses and knocked on doors for help. She heard pleading voices coming from villa number 2. Dai Jia felt a pang of pity for her, thinking of a defenseless young girl outside. "Are we just going to leave her like this?" she wondered.

"At this point, she dares to come out alone and risk her life to ask for help, but she doesn't even dare to fight back and take back the supplies. What's the point of keeping such a piece of trash around?" Zhao Huiyun sneered.

If Dai Jia hadn't been with her brother Dai Jie, she wouldn't have been able to join this team. She really thinks too highly of herself and even pleads for others.

"Is everything set up outside?" Zhuang Ting slowly walked downstairs, ignoring the sounds outside. "Almost. We've secured the wooden stakes around the perimeter, just like we did with Villa No. 6." Qi Sixing paused for a moment. "Xiao Han and the others aren't feeling better yet."

The city was already piled high with corpses, and the persistent fog caused by condensation of water vapor would have a certain impact on people's physical and mental health.

-

Song Jinhe carefully observed the environment around the villa. The wooden stakes could only stop the zombies for a while, and were not safe enough.

Not sure if digging a hole would work, she thought, "If a zombie falls in, I can set it on fire to clear it out." With that thought, she took out a shovel, called her companions, and found a suitable spot to start digging.

This task was slower than chopping down trees; it took a whole day to dig just a small hole.

Zhang Yi suddenly fell ill, with symptoms including dizziness, chest tightness, and general weakness. It was due to the weather. Song Jinhe gave her two pills that were appropriate for her symptoms, but it was unclear whether they would be effective.

Song Jinhe fully charged all the emergency lights during the day and placed them on the bedside table at night with the brightness turned down to the lowest setting.

She used to be unable to sleep if there was even the slightest noise or light, but now the excessively quiet and dark environment makes her restless.
For the past few days, I've been waking up in the middle of the night in a fright, dreaming that people who died in the past have turned into zombies and are lying on the windowsill, laughing at me.

She needs to use her talent to confirm that everything around her is normal before she can feel at ease going back to sleep; sometimes she can't fall asleep at all.

Placing a small lamp nearby makes me feel much better when I wake up in the middle of the night.

That afternoon, Song Jinhe saw a car outside with its fog lights on, not going out, but coming in through another small door.

With the fog so thick, she couldn't possibly risk going out to check. Screams were heard before dawn this morning, and she had no idea what had become of the villa area.

As night fell, Song Jinhe stepped onto the terrace and inadvertently noticed the interface of the tablet in Jiang Shi'an's hand, which looked like some kind of data.

"I didn't see anything." This was the truth. She came from behind, and her gaze inevitably swept over, just for a glance.

Looking at other people's electronic device screens is never a good idea, so to avoid any misunderstandings, she offered an explanation.

"It's alright." Jiang Shi'an placed the tablet directly in front of her. "It's no longer classified information, since the confidentiality rules are now just scrap paper."

Song Jinhe looked down at the screen. The data in the experimental area seemed to be research on zombies and gifted individuals. She didn't quite understand those technical terms related to gene sequences.

"There's still internet?"

Jiang Shi'an: "We can only view the experimental zone data, but we can't contact the outside world."

In other words, some communication channels that are not publicly available are still usable, but their effectiveness is not great.

Just as the two of them were talking, from the main entrance of the villa area, faint rustling footsteps could be heard in the darkness and fog.

The people inside the house were completely unaware of this.

Shen Li walked out of the bathroom in the dark. They had been using basins since there was no water, so they could just open the window and pour the water onto the trees outside to solve the problem.

Suddenly, there was a noise on the balcony.

It appears exceptionally clear in a quiet environment.

Zombie: Guess why I'm not laughing?
